“The Ultimate Standard!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013 via mobile

If there were ever a place that should be used as a role-model for every other guesthouse, Summerplace would be the obvious choice.

Perched up a hill overlooking the shores of western Madeira, it not only serves as the perfect base for discovering the endless miles of Levadas, but offers a haven of childless peace and tranquillity that would sooth even the frayest of nerves.

Summerplace welcomes you to the owners' tastefully decorated home. Five perfectly-equipped rooms lead off from a living room/dinning area, the site of Johannes' periodical culinary feasts (a bargain at €35 for a 3-course evening meal incl. all beverages). Breakfast is enjoyed on the outside deck, overlooking pine forests and hills that plunge down towards the Atlantic Ocean; and having enjoyed one of Barry's "full house" omelettes and/or a large selection of homemade cakes and preserves, it is quite difficult to imagine the day getting any better.

Which it does, of course, culminating with you lounging on your balcony, sipping a glass of portugese white wine (a 7dl bottle of which can be found in your minibar for a mere €6!) while watching the sun set amongst a myriad blazing colours. A sight that can be equally enjoyed while soothing your hiking muscles in the saltwater infinity pool set in an immaculately landscaped garden.

If there ever were such a place, it would definitely be The Summerplace Guesthouse!

Wow! What a wonderful review (and very well written). Unfortunately we cannot identify you by your nom de plume. However we wish to thank you from all the team at Summerplace.

Everything about our stay was perfect from the incredible breakfast to the beautiful room to the amazing and kind hosts. Every detail is considered, every morning we had different place settings and the artwork and collections in the house and classy and interesting.

Would recommend to anyone - also it's worth it to get a room with a view as you can see the ocean from your bed in the morning.

We stayed here on our honeymoon and arrived with very high expectations due to many reviews that talked highly of the place. I have to say our expectations were not only fulfilled but they even highly exceeded them. Their effort to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible and their customer focus should be used as an example for other hotels or hospitality establishments.
We loved our beutiful room overlooking the ocean, it's so quite there and peaceful there that you can only hear the occassional rooster calling out in the morning. However by rental car very easly accesible, but just in general I would suggest you to not save on renting a car and rent a diesel because roads are very steep.
The room was exceptional, with free minibar restock every day, very good quality wines that you can enjoy on your balcony looking at the beautiful sunsets.
Breakfast is very stilishly serves on their piano and the way they make their eggs and fried tomatoes is just amazing!
I would recommend this place to anyone desiring some peace and quite during their Madeira experience and doing all that in a very high quality and sheek atmosphere! One of the best places we have ever stayed at if not the best!!

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are amazing, with exceptional views for sunsets

This little B&B is located up in the mountains with a wonderful view down to the sea. While we were there, we often had clouds coming up the mountains below us. We had the room facing the pool and as the other guests were out for hikes most of the time, we had the pool to ourselves most often (when we were not out). The guesthouse is beautifully decorated.

Barry and Johannes were such great hosts, always at hand with tips and recommendations. One afternoon we even had a special "High Tea" where a quartet was playing music. The usual "High Teas" arranged by Barry and Johannes are great, too - just without the music.

Room Tip: We stayed in the room facing (with a sliding window door) the pool. The other standard rooms have se...

We spent 6 nights at Summerplace Guesthouse as part of our Madeiran honeymoon and can't say enough wonderful things about it. Our first 4 nights we had the place to ourselves and really enjoyed getting to know Barry and Johannes. They are such thoughtful hosts and have paid attention to the details that make the guesthouse such a lovely stay. We loved our breakfasts outside overlooking the hillside and Atlantic. We highly recommend Summerplace!

Summerplace Guesthouse is one of the best places I've ever stayed at. I'm so sad not to be there anymore!

The guesthouse itself is beautifully designed, set in the hillside, surrounded by greenery with a great view of the Ocean. The decor is even better, I was mesmerised by all of the artefacts that had been collected from all over the world. My favourites were a basket of ostrich eggs, an old diving helmet and a large fossilised fish.

The hosts, Johannes and Barry are wonderful. They obviously take great care and pride in running the guesthouse which I know isn't an easy task, but their efforts really have paid off. Johannes will make sure that you have absolutely everything you need and Barry amongst an array of orher treats will cook you a perfect breakfast, to order, and still manage to keep his chef whites...bright white! I don't eat breakfast usually, but the food here was too good to miss!

I don't see how the rooms have been described as small, how big does a room need to be?! We stayed in two rooms (my boyfriend panicked as it was a surprise trip for me so I think he wanted to try the garden room and sea view). Crisp white sheets, fluffy pillows, lovely toiletries, a free mini bar, tv, DVDs...thick, soft toilet paper. Everything was great.

I shall definitely be back one day and will certainly be recommending this guesthouse to everyone.

Thank you for a perfect stay!

We have just returned from a week at this lovely, guest house, situated on the top of a hill so the views over the sea and countryside are breathtaking. But bear this in mind if you want wall to wall sunshine, it is a few degrees colder up there. We didn't venture into the pool, but the pool and gardens are also lovely. The rooms are small , but it is a guest house not a hotel. and with those lovely views you can sit on the balcony for hours !!
The breakfasts are excellent, Johannes and Barry are experienced, friendly and welcoming hosts.Nothing is too much trouble, they prepared us an early breakfast as we had to leave by 9.
Only disappointing thing for us was the withdrawal of the Candlelight dinner evenings. We understand they must have been hard work and the High Tea replacement is not quite the same. Though we did order one on our arrival day which was a great idea, served at 5 and meant we could relax and not worry about where to eat that night. Quiche, salad and cakes, along with a never ending supply of wine and coffee.
The little extra touches in the room were good, espresso machine, toiletries in the bathroom and of course the complimentary bar was indeed very welcome.
Nearby restaurants are 5 minutes drive away, we would recommend Chicos and also Omhar do Campo. Joe's bar was great for lunch, in Jardim do Mar.
If you dislike big Hotels and love guest houses this should be on your list of places to visit.

Room Tip: Sea view or Garden view are the best rooms
