“Beautiful place, Brilliant hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013 via mobile

Summerplace Guesthouse is one of the best places I've ever stayed at. I'm so sad not to be there anymore!

The guesthouse itself is beautifully designed, set in the hillside, surrounded by greenery with a great view of the Ocean. The decor is even better, I was mesmerised by all of the artefacts that had been collected from all over the world. My favourites were a basket of ostrich eggs, an old diving helmet and a large fossilised fish.

The hosts, Johannes and Barry are wonderful. They obviously take great care and pride in running the guesthouse which I know isn't an easy task, but their efforts really have paid off. Johannes will make sure that you have absolutely everything you need and Barry amongst an array of orher treats will cook you a perfect breakfast, to order, and still manage to keep his chef whites...bright white! I don't eat breakfast usually, but the food here was too good to miss!

I don't see how the rooms have been described as small, how big does a room need to be?! We stayed in two rooms (my boyfriend panicked as it was a surprise trip for me so I think he wanted to try the garden room and sea view). Crisp white sheets, fluffy pillows, lovely toiletries, a free mini bar, tv, DVDs...thick, soft toilet paper. Everything was great.

I shall definitely be back one day and will certainly be recommending this guesthouse to everyone.

Thank you for a perfect stay!

We have just returned from a week at this lovely, guest house, situated on the top of a hill so the views over the sea and countryside are breathtaking. But bear this in mind if you want wall to wall sunshine, it is a few degrees colder up there. We didn't venture into the pool, but the pool and gardens are also lovely. The rooms are small , but it is a guest house not a hotel. and with those lovely views you can sit on the balcony for hours !!
The breakfasts are excellent, Johannes and Barry are experienced, friendly and welcoming hosts.Nothing is too much trouble, they prepared us an early breakfast as we had to leave by 9.
Only disappointing thing for us was the withdrawal of the Candlelight dinner evenings. We understand they must have been hard work and the High Tea replacement is not quite the same. Though we did order one on our arrival day which was a great idea, served at 5 and meant we could relax and not worry about where to eat that night. Quiche, salad and cakes, along with a never ending supply of wine and coffee.
The little extra touches in the room were good, espresso machine, toiletries in the bathroom and of course the complimentary bar was indeed very welcome.
Nearby restaurants are 5 minutes drive away, we would recommend Chicos and also Omhar do Campo. Joe's bar was great for lunch, in Jardim do Mar.
If you dislike big Hotels and love guest houses this should be on your list of places to visit.

Room Tip: Sea view or Garden view are the best rooms

This delightful guesthouse felt like a home away from home. The owners made us feel so welcome and always went the extra mile to make sure that we were as comfortable as possible! We were delighted to learn that each room had a complementary bar fridge – what a treat! The views are breath taking and the gardens are beautiful! Our tasty breakfasts on the porch were definitely something to look forward too! The guesthouse is in the perfect location for all those who love nature! We particularly enjoyed our walks through the forest situated just behind the guesthouse. The décor is fantastic! There would always be a fire going – welcoming us to cuddle up on the couch with a good book from the library. I have absolutely no complaints and will definitely recommend Summerplace to anyone! Thank you to the friendly owners and staff, we will make sure to see you again – SOON!

Unfortunately their was a problem with our booking and we ended up in the standard room - which was actually also a nice room (no view though)!

The guesthouse is great, the personal attention and dedication of the hostst is wonderful and the views from the pool, lounge and deck are breathtaking. Definitely worth a visit!

Room Tip: The standard room doesnt have a view, but we didnt spend much time in our room so not a problem.

This is a charming guest house with friendly hosts in quiet part of the island. It's location is great for walking - there is access to the levada just a few hundred yards away from the guest house. The breakfasts are a lovely, lazy affair with a great buffet, proper tea and beautifully cooked eggs.

It's a great break away from the tourist trap that is Funchal but there are a couple of downsides and if you can cope with these we'd definitely recommend it. The bedrooms and bathrooms are very small - the photography on the website doesn't make this clear. But there is a nice open sitting/dining room, library and garden so there is space you can enjoy if you're happy to share it with others.

And it is very remote which means a decent drive to the local restaurants as they can't offer dinner any more. We found this to be a bit of a pain especially as the reviews of their dinner option were so good. And being up in the mountains the fantastic view is lost if there is cloud around which can also make driving a little scary at times.

Firstly, thank you for your comments. We always take reviews seriously and we do try to make improvements where possible. We are pleased that you appreciated the breakfast buffet, and the proximity to levada walks and hiking trails. Also, thank you for the positive comment regarding the fantastic views. Being in a rural location this is exactly the market we target. We have the following comments:

First and foremost we are a guesthouse. We do not like to call ourselves an hotel, as there is a distinct difference in guests' needs and requirements. A guesthouse is typically much smaller than an establishment graded as an hotel, and is almost always privately run and owned, as we are. This has a number of advantages.
As owners we are much closer to the business, and therefore closer to our guests. We like to pride ourselves on the quality, personalised service, standard of food and ambience that is part of our offering. Being a lot smaller than a typical hotel we are generally more in tune with our guests' needs. We get a lot of compliments in this regard.

A guesthouse is a place of get-togethers and social interaction whereby hotels are rather more anonymous. In our marketing efforts we therefore try to make clear that if you are looking for a friendly atmosphere where social interaction is encouraged, then Summerplace is for you. To this end we have taken great care and planning to ensure conducive public areas for everyone to enjoy.

Our guesthouse is not marketed as having large bedrooms and bathrooms. We also do not believe that our bedroom photos are deceiving. We have no photos of the bathrooms, but will include some shortly. We have not used trick photography, such as the use of fish-eye and other wide-angle lenses. We specifically state in our website the square meterage of each room. We would like to emphasize to anyone reading this response the quality of the rooms. Size alone should not be the only criterion in one's review. All our furnishings and fittings are of a superior quality and all have been imported. We have had many positive comments on the quality and comfort of our beds. Each room has a well-equipped mini-bar and fridge, the contents of which are replaced free of charge each morning. Recently the rooms were upgraded to include a personal espresso machine. We also provide each room with a flat-screen TV and DVD player with a selection of movies. The bathrooms all have rain showers, and all are equipped with ample fresh towels on a heated towel rail and a wide selection of toiletries.

A typical guesthouse establishment operates on a bed-and breakfast basis only. We do not market that we offer dinners, but we apologise if previous guests' comments from last year were misleading. However we cannot manipulate nor erase guest comments on the numerous travel websites. The dinner evenings were replaced by traditional High Teas, which we offer every alternative day. Our guests find this to be a satisfactory dinner replacement. A prospective guest should be aware that he will not find a city vibe nor basic amenities nearby, but wonderful scenery and country fresh air. We are exactly a one-minute drive to the the excellent via Expresso, Madeira's new highway system that covers almost every corner of the island in just over an hour. Nine local restaurants are less than a four minute drive from the Guesthouse.

We thank you for recommending Summerplace Guesthouse.

We've just got back from a lovely week away in Maderia staying in the Architect's Beach Cottage. The directions and instructions to get to the property were very clear and easy to follow. The position of the property on the cliff overlooking the sea was breathtaking. The sight and noise of the waves were amazing and the sun sets were georgeous. The property itself was a great base for touring the island and with the floor to ceiling glass walls upstairs and down made for some beautiful views. Our only two criticisms were the description of the kitchen and equipment was a bit misleading - it was fairly basic rather than a chef's dream with half the hob not working! And, wanting to charge a further €25 for wi-fi is a bit steep. However, neither detracted from the overall delight of staying there. I'd go back, and I'd recommend it.

Room Tip: Be aware that the sound of the waves is very loud!! But very lovely too.

We have just spent a fabulously relaxing week at the Architect's Beach Cottage. It is all that the website says, and lots more. The views are absolutely spectacular, and the terrace is large and completely private. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and furnished. Jardim do Mar has several places to eat - the view from the terrace at 'Tar Mar' restaurant was especially good, and the staff very friendly and helpful. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Architect's Beach Cottage to anyone who is looking for a completely relaxing time away from everything.
