This is an excellent hotel as long as you remember that you are in Cuba. Everything was very basic and clean and the maids did a great job on cleaning the room. Room size was good, the bed was hard and the pillows flat but there were extra pillows if you require them. TV was up to date with a few English channels (HBO, City TV, Global) The bath was very clean, lots of hot water, but a high step up into the tub. There was a grab bar which made it easier. The air conditioning was a bit on the noisy side but not a huge deal. It was hard to open the patio door to our balcony but we never did complain as It didn't really bother us. A gap between the floor and the entry door so we put a towel against it at night.
A great selection of food, never a problem finding something to eat. The seafood dinner was excellent. We paid extra for a "private dinner" in the gazebo for a special occasion and this was an even better lobster dinner and with personal service. We would pay for this again ($60).
The two specialty restaurants were quite nice, especially the Italian one, it was fabulous. We had a great dinner of Filet Mignon. Make sure you have a few of their "Breezes and Spanish coffees", they are delicious. There is now a deli on site which is great for those time you will miss a meal or are hungry late at night, apparently this is a new addition.
Employees were generally very friendly but restaurant staff does seem to remember who gives tips and who does not, which can affect the service. Sometimes you just don't have money with you, but if coming again we would remember this.
Pool was clean and well kept, seats were reserved extremely early in the morning for the choice seats. Beach was very nice. Read the reviews as water shoes are a must. This is on a reef for the snorkelling so visitors should not complain about the rocky shoreline. Water was very clear and tons of colorful fish.
Nightly entertainment is not great, we did not make an effort to attend but that was our choice.
Went on a trip to Havana which was very informative and nice. Tour rep told us at the beginning of the trip how we should be tipping on our vacation. Very interesting to listen to but in poor taste. Seems to be moving towards how tipping is expected in Mexico and DR.
Went on a catamaran trip with snorkelling, swimming with the dolphins and lobster or chicken dinner on an island. Dolphins were nice but snorkelling was a joke. Not enough equipment and some people were rude, pushy and did not think of others. (Germans and French) We opted to not snorkel since we did it so much at the hotel and you were only given about 15 minutes to do it which wasn't enough time anyway. The crew makes a good effort to get everyone involved which was fun. Definitely worth the cost ($110 per) compared to trips in other countries of the same type (which do not include dolphins).
Some staff - especially Luis(?) was extremely personable and is a great representative of the hotel. Other ladies in the specialty restaurants also make your time there a treat. We spoke to many people who had been there multiple times, one couple as many as 13 times, these people are well known by the hotel staff and treated well.
The only negative thing I can say is that I wanted to have a massage on the beach. Went to the location on Sunday and Monday it was not occupied. Went on Tuesday and she said she was busy and "maybe" could fit me in Saturday if she had a cancellation. This is not acceptable but we did see that they are currently constructing a spa/massage building that should rectify that problem. Not having spa services is a big gap which they are missing out on to satisfy their clients as many of us like these spa services when we vacation. Could move the hotel up a notch in many people eyes.
Would we go again? Absolutely, if we planned on going to the area again. Great location, half way between Havana and Varadero.
