“Fantastic little gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago

I booked this hotel after looking at reviews and the hotels website and the hotel did not dissapointed! I emailed asking what time I could check in and the hotel offered to organise a transfer for us which was cheaper than the one out other hotel had offered.

When we arrived we were offered a welcome drink which was lovely! The staff were so welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. Our bungalow had everything we needed it was clean and well presented. The hotel itself has lots of different things for you to do a private beach, cinema, bar and restaurant. We are all our meals here and all of the food was fantastic. We had a Swahili night and then dinner on the beach which was really beautiful. On our last day the hotel staff allowed us to check out late which meant we could swim and then have showed just before leaving. I highly recommend this hotel and the service was fantastic. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Recently, I stayed at the Hakuna Matata Beach lodge and Spa. I was a bit worried because I am a young, female traveling alone. My fears were for naught, although you have to drive through some "interesting" territory to get to the lodge, it is well worth it. The lodge was beautiful. There were a few cons but mostly pro's and I would certainly stay there again. The staff was amazing and the food was so good, I wanted to beg the chef to come back to America with me. ☺. Mohammed, the tour director on site was a godsend and the entire team made my trip that much more enjoyable.

Pros
Mohammed ( All 3 Mohammed's)

Room
Furniture ( i would give anything to have the furniture shipped to the US)
Location to Beach
Location to Ruins
Breakfast
Dinner

Cons
Wish I had more interaction with the owners Rose and Fritz
Mosquitoes ( OMG) be prepared because that part sucks but by day 2 I was fine. I was ready for the little buggers.

So- SO Situation
No TV in the room.. Yikes, but believe it or not it made my trip more relaxing because I was able to read my books
Wifi is not that great

Room Tip: Try to ask for a room further into the lodge, I was so paranoid my first night because I was near th...

This is a beautiful resort with interesting ruins interspersed among the characterful thatched cottages and reception and dining buildings. There is tasteful African art everywhere and the gardens are well tended. The food is outstanding and imaginatively served in various locations. During our three-day stay we had dinner on the beach (with live local music), in the dining room and at a trestle table with other guests among the ruins. The staff are friendly and efficient and the owners are very hospitable and helpful. It is easy to arrange tours or taxi rides to Stone Town and spice farms from within the resort. The only downside was the bumpy approach road for the last 10 minutes, but we understand this will be rectified when the neighbouring resort is completed.

Room Tip: It could be a few minutes walk to the reception area.

i stayed here for one night in Oct 2014. it was a very bumpy ride to get over a potholed dirt track, but very nice upon arrival. i had a delicious evening meal although there was no choice so was lucky i loved it. Room very nice, no complaints. Staff friendly and helpful. i would say this is more for couples than solo travellers.

A very relaxing, beautiful runaway lodge among the ruins n colourful nature, located on the west coast, nicely landscaped n overlooking the ocean wherever you are
Very friendly owners and staff trying hard to satisfy your needs ( a limited prepaid mobile phone is handed over to guest on arrival to keep them in contact with Hotel front desk and lodge taxi drivers) Food is simple and good. Tour operators headed by Mohammed are very friendly n helpful. It would have been very helpful if group tours would be arranged as first time visitors are not fully aware of the secrets of the island. A pleasant place to go!

Room Tip: South rooms are with better view to the Ocean.

The Hakuna Matata beach lodge and Spa has an abundance of tranquility. It's beautifully located at the Zanzibar coast in Bububu. The lodge is somewhat remote, but the lodge offers a travel desk which can sort out all your wishes.

Upon arrival we were greeted by the owners Fritz and Rose. After a short introduction of the lodge, we (Mrs and I) were shown our little cabin. The cabin was very comfortable, though the bed was maybe a little hard for my likings. The cabin consists of a small sitting room, bath- and bedroom, which more than sufficient. The wifi signal in the room was little low and we did struggle at times to get connected. Also the wifi isn't completely free, as we were given 100mb free, but after that we had to pay for the wifi. Also the wall sockets are all European mainland connections, so one would need to bring adapters from home or borrow one from the lodge.

The restaurant is overlooking the Indian Ocean and gives fantastic views of the Zanzibar coastline and views towards Snake Island and Prison Island. The menu is adequate, but mostly orientated on seafood. There are other options available and one can always ask the kitchen to prepare something. The night menu is a predetermined 3-course meal, which one would have to write in for during the day. The lodge has a private beach and every other day there is a diner on the beach with (local) live music.

The bar is small, but it can hold the total amount of the guest easily. The variety of alcohol beverages is as usual, though they are pricy. Then again when visiting a tropical destination anywhere in the world, the prices are accordingly. A beer (local) sets you back $4,-.

The Mrs visited the Spa a couple of times and told me she really enjoyed it. Again somewhat pricy, but no pain no gain, right?

We organised the Stone Town tour through the hotel and this was very enjoyable and educational. If one decides to have this organised through the hotel, try to get the city tour guide called Mr. Seif. A Zanzibarian local with a great knowledge of the history of Zanzibar - better bring notepad for all the dates he mentions.

Overall I would recommend the Hakuna Matata Lodge to people, who like the type of holidays in which all can be organised from the lodge. The lodge is remotely located and one can't just jump in a taxi and move around. This has to be planned from the travel desk. All in all... very enjoyable.

The Hakuna Matata Beach Lodge is an excellent hotel in every aspect. Especially outstanding was the service (which should come as a surprise to travelers that know Zanzibar) and the food. There was not a single dinner served that was less than perfect. The style is some sort of Euro-African fusion. We never had Lunch, so we cannot comment on that. Breakfast was also very good, however not as remarkable as the dinner.

It is immediately apparent that the owners of this place (who are also the managers) have put a huge effort into making the site as enjoyable as possible. There is a small but very tidy and beautiful beach with a view of local dowes and the remains of an old arabian palace on the edge of the bay. The main grounds of the lodge are situated on a plateau above but directly adjacent to the sea. In between the huts (where guests sleep) there is a spa, a cascading pool built into the ruins of an old aqueduct from the arabian palace and presumably the ruin of a tiny mosque that has now two rooms built into it to hang out and relax oriental style. Also, there is a terrace on top of the mosque that can be used for stargazing, however the light pollution from nearby zanzibar city does put some limits to that.

The rooms are very tidy and well kept. The interior is african style, with lots of dark (mahagony ?) wood. The bathrooms are also clean, however the water pressure is a little weak (although sufficient) for showering.

There is also an in-house concierge company led by mohammed, who is very dedicated to finding the perfect trip for each guest, improvising the details, if requested for. We booked three very delightful trips with his company (stone town, spice tour, jozani national park) which we highly recommend to other visitors.

An alround-recommendation!
