having read reviews of this hotel on here previously, it was with some trepidation that I walked into this hotel - I was on a group holiday to work at the panda reserve. I was really pleasantly surprised, I've just read through some of the reviews before posting again, and can't agree with some of the comments. The reception area is spacious, my room was on the second floor and was fantastically clean with TV, hard beds (but no different to any other hotel in china) and lots of space.
I was there for 4 days and only one morning was there no hot water. The bathroom was more than adequate, there was plenty of toilet roll and panda items including slippers, glass covers and toiletries. English is not spoken at all, and whilst I didn't use the service, others in my party who put item in the safe had problems either putting in or taking out - there seemed to be a set time for doing both things, and in the end the couple involved had to get our guide to help them.
Obviously the main attraction is the pandas, but I was on a major adventure of a lifetime so wandered outside the hotel and found a bank, post office, and further up from the hotel small shops selling panda "tat" and food and drink. I didn't get a chance to go to the Panda Museum, but an added attraction for my group was the last evening, the Miss Universe contest (or something similar) were paying a visit to the reserve, and 80 beauties were staying in the hotel - added a certain something to the male members of my group!
Breakfast was Chinese - the eggs were fine, but I didn't try anything else, our guide had brought a toaster and bread, but others in my group tried it and said it was fine. Dinner was good, but we lunched at the Panda Inn next to the reserve and the food there was better than the Wolong Hotel. One massive downside to the hotel is that there is no-where to sit and have a drink in the evenings, we tried to have a beer in the restaurant and one night at 9.30 they turned the lights off on us! There is a bar area with internet access
upstairs but we were unable to use that due to the contest.
All in all a decent clean hotel and I really was pleasantly surprised, given the previous reviews. The road to the reserve is fairly nightmarish, there is massive building work going on, so be prepared for scary driving and a long journey, ours took 6 hours, but the scenery is fantastic, our driver stopped every so often for photo opportunities, but beware of the toilet facilities on the way there - primitive doesn't even cover them!
