“Great for max 3 nights stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

We loved our stay in L'AND Vineyards. We stayed there 3 nights and it was perfect to relax. During longer stay there is not so much to do except using hotel´s Spa and outdoor pool.

We did not experiance smell that other reviewers were talking about.

We loved:

restaurant (food was delicious)

outddor pool (little minus: it was sometimes very windy)

Fireplace (we used it 2 times)

little details like daily info about weather & cakes

design of hotel (wooden furniture were very nice)

very comfortable bed

high level of privacy on patio

Slight minuses:

not much to do around Montemor-o. Novo except seeing castle

paintings hung around main building were not very impressive

Garden and vineyard need many years more to be impressive but since hotel was open in 2011 we did not expect it to be impressive.

I stayed with my boyfriend for a single night at L'And, thus I didn't get a full perspective of how the hotel works, mainly day cleaning, in-room services, and the spa.
The hotel is operated by a less then a decade old company specializing in boutique lodging and gourmet restaurants. Among them are Vila Monte (Algarve), Quinta das Lagrimas (Coimbra) or restaurant Eleven (Lisbon), to name a few. I've been to all of their properties, and this most recent addition manages to surprise in a negative way.
First things first, the impression you get from the hotels website is somewhat unreal, on the verge of misleading. The resort is still under construction, the gardens are far from mature, the vineyard is in it's infancy, and the lake is not even full. The whole concept is rather fake, as after a stroll around the property it becomes quite clear that L'And is a mock-farm and not a proper agricultural operation. I sincerely doubt that the property wine hails from anything grown around the hotel.
Because the resort is still under construction, and it seems that said work is temporarily halted, the view is sprinkled with concrete structures that will eventually become houses and apartments. Since the gardens are still to be grown around them, the end effect is that you are surrounded by arid and dusty construction sites. What is indeed built is the main hotel building, wich houses the public rooms, restaurant and spa, and three long rows of hotel rooms and suites. The design is modern brutalist, Rem Koolhas meets Siza Vieira, all done in whitewashed concrete. A completely unapropriate construction technique given the surroundings, it is already
aging quite badly.
My room - a L'and View Suite - was quite spacious, boasting a very large patio with fire place, a very large half empty living room, a small bed room, and a tiny bathroom. The amount of space wasted is shocking given how cramped the bathroom and bedroom are. As usual, modern architecture and interior design just for the sake of it prove very detrimental for the guests experience. There is a grand total of 5 light fixtures in the entire room, so at night the room is much to dark. The furniture is nordic retro and very tastefull. The patio was dirty, and the walls were cracked. There was a very unpleasant smell of sewer coming from the bathroom. Smell was an issue throughout, as a gentle whiff of manure pervaded the entire property.

The pool is quite nice looking, clad in dark tiles and surrounded by grass and wooden deck. The outdoor furniture is superb, but has probably had no maintenance whatsoever since brought to the hotel, and is looking worn. The pool is understaffed, so eating, drinking, or getting a dry towel may take for ever.

The bar in the main building looks good, but is pitch dark and soulless, probably because it doubles as main entrance hall. The restaurant looks like a swedish corporate canteen, boasts a beautiful view, and has two walled terraces at each side, with no view whatsoever, terribly hot during summer daytime, and chilly at night. Again, great looking from a distance, totally inadequate for proper usage.
The restaurant is superb foodwise. The hotels' most redeeming feature, it offers a mix of traditional alentejo ingredients and contemporary techniques, artfull presented and very tastefull. Service is bordeline lacking however. The very small team does its very best to cope with being clearly understaffed. The individual staff members do their personal best given the constraints. They are a very polite and helpfull bunch, but there's just to few of them.

I wouldn't recomend this property, as I think that given it's price range and intended standard there are better options, albeit few. The restaurant however is probably the very best in the region and is well worth a visit. Do eat indoors though.

I had really high hopes for this property. The website has incredible pictures of the rooms, the renderings of the property were amazing and the reviews were not that bad. And I really think my problem were the expectations.

The concept behind this hotel was to create a small (100 villas!?) village with an hotel that would provide services for the guests and residents. It was designed with an ultra modern architecture, that was supposed to be surrounded by luxurious vines and trees...

The reality: ultra modern architecture with cheap materials that is already aging badly (it's 1 year old) in the middle of a barren landscape. The constructions of the villas has stopped and so the scenery is not very appealing with the daylight. Although at night the darkness really helps creating the environment that is intended...

The hotel: rooms are very spacious with patios and filled with light during the day. Our patio was very secluded and private, and the only problem were the huge wasps that had conquered the ivy near the shower.I liked the modern interior design, but the bathroom was very small and the construction materials were very cheap looking. Bed very comfortable. The major problem with the room was the smell! As in other reviews we were also troubled with the intense and permanent sewer smell that invaded the entire room.

Service: the hotel is severely understaffed and this of course compromises the service. especially the pool service. Other than that the staff is polite and attentive.

Pool: very well designed with comfortable daybeds and a good size. The major problems are the manure smell ( particularly intense in these hot summer days) and the crowding. As in other hotels in Alentejo, the pool is the only place you can be in the summer. And so every guest and child in the hotel is there. So it's very difficult to enjoy a relaxing time when you have badly mannered children yelling and not so polite guests talking loudly. But this of course is beyond the hotel management control.

Restaurant: the true gem of this place is the chef! I was completely surprised with the creativity, quality and technique of the food served. An absolute must! You should come here even if you are not staying in the hotel. The only problem is, like I said before, the lack of staff power. Other than that and this is a worthy future bearer of 1 or 2 Michelin stars.

Suming it all up, my advice is: it's a nice place to visit for 1 or 2 nights since the price is reasonable, now that they've lowered the rates. I wouldn't recommend a longer stay. Not the luxurious aman-style they try to sell but, nevertheless, given the local alternatives still worth checking.

Room Tip: Don't choose the ones with outdoor jacuzzi... You can end up in the tub with guest strolling 3 f...

We stayed here for celebrating my daughter this year's birthday. In winter the weather is cold in Alentejo. Temperatures about 0º C. They gave us a two rooms, two bathrooms suite, for four adults. We loved the concept! electronic toilets, heated floor, black paper for notes and white pencil, homemade cookies, i-Pad and wi-fi at our disposal, everithing seems gourmet! Very good breakfast and nice Spa. Wine taste is a must. Good value for the money if you accept to pay all the exclusivity and stay in a very different hotel concept. Nice hideaway for a romantic escapade. Certainly she/he will be impressed! You must experience it! I'm planning to be back...better with summertime and ask for even more than only the standard offer!

I booked a "LAND VIEW" suit and at check in they gave us a "SKY VIEW" suit. WE LOVED IT: the decoration, the personal, the food, the bed, the particular open air jacuzzi, and specially the SKY VIEW window on top of our bed. What a great experience!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a SKY VIEW suite. It is super!

It is a very good hotel and SPA, great wine and food, big and romantic rooms with sky view, excellent service, but too expensive with no more attractions for a resort. They need more attention in their internal swimming pool, not so hot as they say and I think they should include a longer taste of wine, instead the small one they do.

Room Tip: If you want to choose the sky view suite be sure the weather is clean.

There are some mixed reviews on here so I wanted to add mine as I just had the best hotel experience of my life at L'AND. The concept of this place is to enjoy the peace and quiet - I received a lovely handwritten note in my room which really set the tone for the rest of the stay. I found the staff to be warm and attentive, well educated and multi-lingual. The meals were up with the best meals of my life and I have had the pleasure of eating at some of the world's best restaurants (definitely the best buffet breakfast ever). The architecture and interior decoration is world class - very modern - and I can imagine it might not suit the old fashioned. The perks in the room were luxurious and functional and I believe the design suits all seasons. It was rather cold during our stay but we had a lovely massage, sauna and a hot bath in our room. It couldn't have been a nicer or more relaxing experience. One year in and I'm sure there will be many to come...

Room Tip: Splurge on a sky suite.
