“Nice room in a sleepy fishing village”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2014

Rio Lagartos is a small fishing village know for its large colonies of flamencos. Most people coming here are day trippers out of Cancun but if you chose to stay the Hotel Tabasco Rio is a nice place. I have stayed before but since my last visit the rooms have been painted, a/c is good, room is a good size, flat screen, hair dryer and a good shower. Non stop coffee is terrible but you can walk 100 yards to the municipal building where local women are cooking breakfast for the fisherman and get a good cup of coffee. 1 block from the water and good restaurants with very fresh seafood. Get a room on the second floor and you can watch life unfold on the village square.
Staff are friendly and helpful. Anything you want to do here is walking distance. Sunsets are gorgeous. Go out with a local fisherman and see all kinds of birds in the estuary. Great location for birders.

Room Tip: 2nd floor with a balcony overlooking town square.

This was decidedly the "low season" in Rio Lagartos, nonetheless. accommodations and service at Tabasco Rio were "high season" - housekeeping was excellent, the kitchenette serviceable, staff very helpful. OK, so the gated parking was about a block away; we always had access to the vehicle when needed. A two hour Flamingo/crocodile/birdwatching tour was arranged at our convenience at a substantially lower cost than the "rack rate" tours - we had the boat to ourselves with a skilled boat driver-cum-naturalist to spot and identify the wildlife. Only real problem - had to return to Tizimin to find a market for supplies. Limited restaurants for dining out dictated taking full advantage of the in-room facilities.

The Hotel Tabasco Rio fit the bill for myself and our research team, and the accommodations were ready on arrival without any incident. It's a small hotel, but cute and exceeded expectations for such an out of the way location in Mexico. The location was great and the staff were very friendly.

Room Tip: Ask for a second floor room, as the first floor rooms are adjacent to the common waiting area and re...

We stayed in Rio Lagartos from July 23rd - 27th July. We were luck enough to be their when a local festival took place. lots of celebration, horse parades and more.
Hotel Tabasco was in the main square and offered good basic accommodation. Hotel clean and tidy. Staff very friendly. The air con was a life saver at night as it does get hot in the summer months.

Hotel close to local bars, restaurants and shops. Walking distance.

Parking available round the corner.

Good price, good position to explore the area, would stay here again

Room Tip: Traditional small hotel

We arrived fairly late in the day and hadn't made advance plans for accommodation, so we got what we deserved. Tabasco Rio is right in the center of town, the price was relatively good and the room was tiny but clean.

However, after checking in, we realized several things. Our room's tiny in-room water heater was leaking, and dripped constantly, making a large area of the floor wet (the receptionist said it was just water left over from the cleaning of the room, which we quickly realized was not true). The room was also poorly ventilated even with the windows open, and filled up for hours with vapors from the cleaning chemicals they used in the common areas each morning. The hotel's parking yard is about a block away from the hotel, but only accessible with a member of hotel staff accompanying you, leading to worried on our part that we would not be able to access our car for an early morning departure (we ended up being delayed for other reasons, so it was not an issue).

Lastly and by far our biggest complaint, is that the inner courtyard of the hotel (which all of the rooms connect to via internal windows) has terrific acoustical qualities, which would be wonderful for a concert hall but instead mean that even the smallest noises at the reception desk or from other rooms echo loudly and bounce directly into all the rooms, even with the windows tightly closed. Sleeping was extremely difficult with all the noise coming in.

We should have checked TA in advance or just our book, and made plans to stay somewhere (anywhere) else. Hopefully we can help prevent others from making the same mistake.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room not connected to the courtyard. I don't think any exist, but if they do, t...

I really liked this hotel. It had a fairly well-designed modern nautical look that reminded me of a cruise ship. All of the rooms have windows towards the atrium, and it looked like the majority of rooms had street-facing windows. I thought my room was the perfect size and configuration for an overnight stay. All the furnishings were very nice, they had beautiful bedding, and they bed itself was very comfortable. The size of the shower was adequate, but the toilet and sink felt a little bit cramped. What I didn't like was that they kept the entire hotel hermetically closed so that there were no cross breezes, which its design allows. The reason for this seems to be that their screen windows don't have locking mechanisms like their glass ones do. The problem is that when they do the cleaning, the brackish water they use for cleaning doesn't get a chance to dry off and so the tile floor gets sticky. However, this problem went away as soon as I opened my windows and let the air circulate for a bit. I don't know what the other lodging options in town are like, although it looked like there were other good options, but I wouldn't mind staying here again!

Room Tip: Since the hotel is in the center of town, none of the rooms really have a view of the water; but som...

This is the best looking hotel in town but looks can be deceiving. Our room was not cleaned in three days. They said the cleaner was sick but did not bother to get anyone to fill in. The toilet had no toilet seat. We had a room with no window and it was always dark. We could have got a room with a window upstairs but then the wifi would not work. The internet only works in rooms near the reception. All this was bad enough but then we started to notice some kind of bug bites all over our bodies. We asked them to change the sheets but the bites increased. We moved to a different hotel. Your choices in hotels in Rio Largartes are limited if you don't have cash. Only this hotel and one other accept payment in credit cards. All others are cash only and there is no bank in town. Bring enough cash for your visit. I paid with credit card and they charged me an additional three percent for using the card which they didn't tell me about until I checked out. There are much better hotels in Rio Lagartoes than this one. This one is in the town centre. I would recommend one on the waterfront.
