“Chamarel Coloured Earth”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2014

We visited this attraction on our first trip to Mauritius 14 years ago and returned this trip with friends on their first holiday in Mauritius. Coloured Earth has improved quite a bit in 14 years adding a café, gift shop, walk paths & viewing platforms in the sights was welcomed. The attraction itself is geographically interesting and the site needed some additional interest to make the visit worthwhile. Giant turtles are enclosed at the bottom of a landscaped area. The addition of local plants in the landscape area was interesting for me as a keen gardener. Trees are labelled well however listed in their Latin names which may be a bit complicated for non gardeners, an improvement might be to include common names (where available). Friends certainly took more interest when I pointed out that one tree was related to Cocoa (I may be corrected on that). However plant/trees such as Coffee or cocoa could be labelled with common names to add interest for visitors.

A pleasant stop as we journeyed through Black River Gorges National Park.

This place is worth a quick trip. The view is nice and impressive. They have few giant turtles which are more than 150 years old.. but apart from this, there isnt much to do here..

“A good quick fix on Mauritian culture, but don't spend all day there...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

Conveniently we travelled from Casela to Chamarel which took only 40 mins, the drive leading to the Seven Coloured Earth can be marvelled by its picturesque viewing along the long narrow road that takes you to the site with the waterfall sandwiched in between.
Personally the waterfall is graceful with its typical Mauritius green background, then 5 mins down the road you encounter the SCE which was nice looking on a sunny day, but once you've seen it from 3 different angles, what more is their to see? The site is also fenced up so that customers are not allowed beyond them.
But really you have to enjoy the science that's behind it, with the iron and aluminium effectively producing those seven colours.
A great tip would be to try and integrate this trip with another one more nearby, such as Casela, Flic en Flac, La Vanille etc...
