We came across Palais de Barbizon by chance, having driven down through the Black River Gorges National Park into Chamarel. It was mid-August, so quiet. We wandered into the front of the restaurant and asked the proprietor for a menu. He replied they had no menu, and chuckled at us! "Just one dish!" he announced, smiling. And sure enough, one of the charms of the restaurant is that the 'special' advertized outside - fish, chicken, vegetables, punch and desert - is the ONLY menu!! So we went in and this was one of the most interesting eating experiences of the holiday. The restaurant is basic, but elegantly laid out, clean and comfortably relaxed, with open frontage and side door (see photo), giving it a 'back-garden summer lunch feel.' The proprietor was charming, friendly and laughing - he was also the waiter as well as the owner! We really enjoyed talking and joking with him and were treated to a leisurely feast of chicken, fish, a selection of vegetables - all cooked in interesting ways - and a delicious punch. Plus water or soft drinks for the drivers! It was a huge spread - and followed by a delicious vanilla pod ice cream desert. The settings is a quiet and dusty street, but felt so calm and relaxing. After the meal, the proprietor/waiter took us a on short fruit-tree spotting tour across the street, where gardens brimmed with banana, mango, papaya....Truly recommend you stop by. You'l love it.
