“Marvellous”

Gorgeous view. Very peaceful and great service - Patrick, especially, is wonderful. Good value for money - easily the nicest place we've eaten in Mauritius so far!

“Incredible views not supported by service or food.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2014 via mobile

La Varangue has spectacular views to Le Morne and the sea. It is a barn of a place, and on the day we visited a near empty restaurant the service lacked warmth and felt grudging. Meals of wild boat and deer curry were good. Go for the view and be prepared to pay for it.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Warm welcomig, Resto is situated on the peak of chamarel village, 500 metres high, wooden complex.. Menu, local vegetables as entry, i liked the chicken in creole sauce, Mixed vanilla and frit ices as desert..Exotic food and drinks in a calm green natural space with cool local music as entertainment..

“Too expensive, medium quality”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

We went here after visiting more than 15 places mostly on the west coast of Mauritius. Each time having extremely good experiences in all the places we visited before, this is the first one where we left unsatisfied.

First the prices were highest from anywhere we went before, even the more fancy restaurants. Ok, so the prices are higher but then you expect quality food and drinks. We ordered only starters - the prawns are very expensive for getting only five very small deep-fried prawns. The raw tuna is a bit better (although served with a sauce that is a bad substitute for wasabi), but still really overpriced.

The prices listed are without tax, so final price is even higher (by 15%). The two mentioned starters cost around 16 euro (650 rs) - which is extremely high compared to other places with great food. The waiters are least kind, no one greeted us on leaving. On other places they are much more welcoming. Coffee is also quite poor quality (very watery espresso), and the tea comes in a bag (we expected something more fancy) without any added things such as honey, lemon etc...

All in all, the worst place we visited during 10 days driving around the west coast and central part of Mauritius.

Do not go if you do not have to - see other recommendations on TripAdvisor or go to Alchemist in the Rum Factory that is very close-by. It is not very cheap, but at least the service, the quality of food and all the experience is much better. Or go to the whole menu for 350 rs which is also very close and listed on TripAdvisor.

Both starters costed in the range of 650 rs (almost 16 euros)
