“Gorgeous setting, very good facilities, average service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

Spent a couple of days there just before New year's eve. The setting is incredible: a historic alpine village in the majestic side-valleys that surround the ski resort of Champoluc. You are in a fairy-tailish middle of nowhere - although 15-20 minutes of snowmobile through the forest will take you to the main ski area. The buildings have been nicely refurbished and the underground pool and sauna are a great treat for apres-ski (although a more 'old fashioned' alpine restoration of the hotel lobby and interiors, perhaps with some fireplaces instead of centralized heating everywhere, might have helped). Service is the only sour note: as written by others on this forum, staff try hard but they are not well trained and/or very competent. This lack will be mostly evident at breakfast, dinner (included in the 'mezza pensione' rate) and when you are in need of help (such as luggage transfer inside the village - ours trolleys were misplaced for several hours). Still an acceptable price to pay for the viewing pleasures that come while opening your room shutters in the morning...

I don't know if I should share the best kept secret in the world.... In winter you need a ski jet to get over there but once you are up int the mountains you can feel like traveled in the different time - no cars, no noise just the mountains and small remote village itself. Pure beauty!
Food, interiors are luxurious but without loosing authenticity and local tradition.
Great helpful staff, especially skidoo drivers with the love of speeding up - great fun!
Highly recommended place as long as you are not party animal as there is nothing around in next 6 miles!

My wife and I spent a romantic weekend at the Hotellerie de Mascognaz at the end of August. We came from London and chos HdM based on the recommendation of an Italian friend of ours.

We had a great stay, the service was both friendly and professional, and every member of staff was very helpful.

The location itself is amazing and very peaceful. We stayed in two different chalets, and both were great, very spacious, with a separate living room, and clean. We loved the SPA/pool with views of the Alps and Monte Rosa through the glass wall. We also enjoyed the food: my wife is vegetarian, and the restaurant was able to cater for her.

We would definitely recommend Hotellerie de Mascognaz, and we hope to go back soon.

Room Tip: Chalets near the SPA area are a bit quieter

Instead to be in the Rockies Mountains you are in the magical surrounding of the Monte Rosa.
A perfect retreat for anybody who loves the nature of the Alps in a remote rustic village but with the luxury of a very attentive staff and a very tasty regional food. Romantic, special, unique experience. Two thumbs up.

This hotel was a stop along The Tour du Monta Rosa and would be very difficult to find otherwise. I was told its owned by the same owners of Azimuth Yachts. The hotel is very quaint in a log cabin house with each room something like a fairy tale. Everything was of very good quality. The restaurant is mainly for guests and the food was good. The grounds are extremely beautiful with wonderful mountain views. The hotel Staff will drive you to and from the city upon request and everyone was very helpful. There was one massage therapist on hand who doesn't speak English and some in our group were very uncomfortable with the European style lack of boundaries or coverings during the massage. There is some active construction that is estimated to be completed by winter. This hotel has very nice potential but Best for a secluded get away.

After booking via booking.com you will sooner or later get a bad suprise. On the map of the booking site and even on Tripadvisor the hotel is situated in the center of Champoluc. The real location however is the isolated little mountain village of Mascognaz. Indeed according to the description 3 km from the center of Champolux but sky high in the mountains and unreachable by a normal car due to the steep climb on a mountain trail. The management ignore this misleading situation. They wash their hands of it. Take it or leave it against a cancellation fee is their simple reaction.

In fact the hotel is a gathering of upgraded mountain cabins. The luxury and the good food have to compensate the isolated location. Still the value for money is very limited. The mountain cabins are shaped for the original residents. So a normal person can hardly move without a safety helmet because of the low ceiling and safety shoes to protect your tows for all kind of obstacles. For ‘would be adventurers’ like aged flower power people or young snobs it might be an expensive experience of a lifetime though.

If you are passing by on a mountain trip after managing the steep climb from Champoluc you can get your morning capucino on the nice terras of the hotel. The bill is again a bad surprise. They dare to ask 3 Euro for a small capucino without cacaou. You can better proceed your walk to Crest or Cuniaz. There they ask half the price for a proper capucino.

We stayed one night and cancelled the rest of our stay. The cancelation fee prooved to be a good investment. Our stay in Hotel Relais Des Glaciers in the center of Champoluc was finally the surprise we were anticipating.

We have just got back from a holiday here and, having never written any kind of review before, feel the need to as we just did not have enough information about what kind of place this is. Apparently they are redoing the website, which is a very good thing. I must start by saying that it was AMAZING and an unique place, but you have to be prepared for its situation - if you are hoping for a quick commute to the ski slopes forget it. It is a good half hour (20 min skidoo ride down mountain to carpark followed by landrover to cable car) each way. We were there in March and the snow deteriorated so by the last day the skidoo had been replaced by a landrover with snow chains. We knew it was up the mountains but expected it to be a 5 min journey rather than a 20 min one. Not a problem, but nice to know. For example, we could have skied the first afternoon we arrived if someone at the Breithorn (sister hotel in Champoluc) had suggested to us that we left our stuff with them, and went skiing, rather than getting straight on the skidoo - by the time we were up at Mascognaz it was not realistic to go back down that afternoon. Maybe we just didn't ask enough questions, but it is an unusual place so just to be given a key and shown to your room without any further info was a bit strange. We had to ask where meals were, how the skidoo arrangements worked etc.

However, once we had adjusted to it all it was truly great. There are various chalets - one with 2 bedrooms, one suite, one with about 7 rooms and its own dining room, one that is a restaurant and a new one (Chalet Etre) a 5 min walk across the valley which only opened in Dec 2011. Other than these hotel buidings there is nothing there. You can request one chalet over another if you have a preference when you book, but they can't guarantee where you will be put as they have often have groups to accommodate. We stayed at Etre - there are 6 or 8 rooms and a lovely 'wellness centre' - pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, various treatments on offer, virtual golf and a lot of staff with not a lot to do! You have breakfast there and also aperitifs (extra charge) and cakes etc after skiing. Over breakfast you arrange the departure time of the skidoo. And after skiing you give them a call or wander down to the Breithorn and a driver appears from nowhere to take you back up. The staff were all fantastic and really couldn't do enough for us (except volunteer information!) - but when we were there, some of them were seriously underemployed (eg the spa lady had only done about 15 massages all season and had to be there for several hours everyday - and you don't exactly get passing trade!) But the answer to everything, including a skidoo down at 5.45am to catch a plane was 'no problem'. Dinners were a four course affair, great food and staff not lacking in character (Manuel sprang to mind on more than one occasion!)

It was done to a very high spec - amazing rooms, super comfortable and lovely bathrooms. No coffee making facilities, but maybe that is an Italian thing. Skis were left at the bottom of the cable car so they never needed any transportation, and Champoluc itself is the most reasonably priced place we have skied. Mascognaz is definitely a luxury place and fantastic, but if you are in anyway disabled, in a rush, or with children, consider its sister, the Breithorn, in Champoluc. It is kitted out in a similar style and more 'traditionally located'. For the right type of holiday though, Mascognaz is real treat, secluded and luxurious - the kind of place Prince William should go!
