“A tiny, peaceful retreat on a busy island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

We loved our stay at Muri Beach in spite of a few hiccups during our stay that were unrelated to the place or the management! Vina is an excellent and cheerful hostess and nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed our comfortable villa and particularly the large covered verandah overlooking Muri Beach and the lagoon. Free snorkelling gear and use of canoes. Walked home along the beach from various restaurants.

As soon as we got to Muri Beach Hideaway it felt good - hibiscus flowers, orchids and palms in the garden, hammocks, three big bungalows with lots of air and space and comfy beds, a pool, and steps leading down to the aqua sea. There's a laid-back vibe, nothing is too much trouble, and everything moves at the kind of slow pace you want on a beach holiday. The rooms were clean, the shower was good, and it was lovely sitting on the balcony looking out to the sea and reading the hours away.

As a mature couple wanting to relax and unwind in a peaceful setting this was perfect. The tasteful simplicity of the unit suited our tastes. The authentic Polynesian decoration (tivaevae fabrics and woven mat high pitched ceiling) rather than the generic decor of most large resorts really appealed. Availability of snorkels, masks, reef shoes and flippers are free or it's possible to hire these elsewhere if fussy about wanting something 'newer'. The large covered deck was great as an 'outside room' for reading and drinks and the plastic roll down screen proved very useful as a windbreak on a couple of occasions. Roosters crowing at dawn is part of island living and I barely noticed them.
Vina was a wonderful example of what endeared us to the locals...always cheery, her chuckle helping create the extremely pleasant atmosphere and, for us, going the extra mile when it came to our airport transfer. Her willingness to impart her vast knowledge of Cook Island life and history added to our experience. Highly recommend Muri Beach Hideaway. Hope to return.

Room Tip: The beachfront unit position looks very attractive but I'd be wary of the effect of any strong o...

After the absolute peace of Aitutaki it was a bit of a rude awakening to arrive here and find a relatively busy beach and a road you have to look both ways down before crossing. Mind you, if we'd come straight from London it would have seemed wonderfully quiet and calm. It's quite a rustic, basic place - chickens wandering around (annoyingly noisy at night - bring earplugs), a lovely garden and a decent but no-frills room with a tiny TV in the corner (and I mean tiny) with 2 channels! We had happy evenings sat on the patio listening to the waves breaking on the reef, and walking down the beach to the local restaurant Sails (recommended). The hotel has a tiny pool, a little sundeck and kayaks to take out - it's fun heading across to the nearest island for some snorkelling. They have snorkels, masks and reef shoes to borrow, though to be honest they're largely old and in a pretty bad state so ideally bring your own. Bear in mind the swimming isn't great as the lagoon is so shallow at this point. And I wasn't a big fan of the fairly ugly building overlooking the hotel grounds. But all told, for £140 a night, this is really good value for money and a great place for a couple of relaxing days on the beach. The views really are wonderful and you can take the various cushions down to the beach if you fancy lying on the sand (though there's lots of coral about, and the local dogs may come up to say hello - don't encourage them or they won't leave you alone!).

After 10 days in Sydney, 3 days on other side of Raro and 3 days on Aitutaki and having to fly back home via LAX leaving at midnight, we just wanted 4 days relaxation by and on the beach. This place was almost perfect. We had a Lotus Bungalow, back from the beach. The room was large, as was its bathroom, kitchen and covered deck. The deck by the pool and at the beach was a great place to sit and look out over the lagoon, watching the sailing, kite surfing and fishing / paddle-board riding dogs. We used the kayaks which required some effort to get them back up the stairs (note: remove plug and empty any water before lifting).
Breakfast wasn't included but they supplied a litre of milk and juice, bottled water, instant coffee and sugar and we went foraging for ground coffee for the French Press, cereal from Mr Woo's(?) and daily muffins from the Deli Bakery across the road. It was within easy walking distance to a number of good restaurants (Sails especially for happy hour and Rickshaw), a takeaway fish and chips shop opposite Mr Woo's and once we took the bus downtown to Trader Jacks for a pizza at their bar.

Room Tip: Try to get a beach view but they are all good.

Have just returned from a short break stay at Muri Beach Hideaway. Having finished our 2 week adventure in New Zealand, this was a welcomed break to just do nothing but relax. It certainly lived up to expectations. We had a beach/pool view villa which had everything we needed. Vina the owner and Henry driver were both very helpful in terms of knowledge and ensuring we had everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible. As mentioned in previous reviews, the free supply of snorkelling equipment, beach shoes, kayak, etc. kept costs down, and expect prices on the island to be dearer than mainland NZ. The closeness to the beach made is easily accessible and offerred wonderful views day and night. The island is approx. 20 miles in circumferance, easily accessible by bus and a good way to see the landscape. If you are a dog lover (which I am not!!!) be prepared as there are a number of these friendly canines dotted around the island expecially on the beach. Overall a very good choice of self catering accommodation which I would highly recommend.

We stayed in the bungalow closest to the ocean. It was fantastic. We were awoken every morning with the sunrise cresting over the ocean right outside our window. The deck provided a closeness to the beach, but offered privacy as well. You are literally steps away from the beach and ocean. The pool is a nice way to refresh, and is also private. The snorkeling and kayaks help too, as this would cost you $ to rent just down the beach. Overall we were extremely satisfied with staying here and would go back in an instant. It is perfect if you just want to relax and unwind with a good book or a beer (or both).

Room Tip: Pick the one closest to the beach.
