“Still Heavenly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2006

We had stayed at the Palazzo several times before and were dismayed to learn of the change in ownership which took place during our stay. As one reviewer said, it would be hard to ruin the idyllic quality of this place. The new management has wisely opted to keep on the staff so Elena is still there making breakfast.
As others have noted, the only negative part of the Palazzo Terranova experience is that hill. If only it were a tiny bit paved! We did venture out every day to visit the amazing towns in Umbria like Spoleto, Gubbio, Perugia, Torgiano, etc. Alas, there was always a bit of trepidation as we approached the hill. But ah, it is so worth it since when you are on top it is truly paradise. We hope that the new owners continue to leave everything as it is/was, except maybe that road...

Palazzo Terranova is in a beautiful setting and is supposedly a dream for all seasons. We were amazed that nearly every member of staff were seen to be smoking at every opportunity at the bar door, office door and kitchen door...the Manager obviously sets the example as he seemed to constantly have a cigarette in his hand....how disappointing it was in such a wonderful environment as smoke seemed to follow you everywhere you went! Sad.

  • Liked — The beautiful and very large wrought iron beds
  • Disliked — Having to pay for water
  • Tips/Secrets — Nights can be cool and no duvets were provided so it is worth asking for one in advance!

We found out about this hotel on 24th August at 10am and were in it by 3pm. We therefore had no preconceptions about the style of the founder and previous owner (although we did meet her). Our experience under the new manager, with the old staff, was excellent. The new chef, who has worked in for the hotel before, is a superb local man whose cooking was a highlight of the stay.

I spoke to the new manager at some length. I get the feeling he will make the hotel more commercial, but overall in a generally positive way, making some needed improvements in the facilities. Even Walt Disney would have difficulty in damaging the charm, beauty and restfulness of this place.

The Palazzo was all what it promised to be: stunning location, individually-decorated rooms with antique furniture, good food and friendly staff. Two points to note though:
A drawback: the dirt road climbing up to it. It was quite damaged, and we found the ride up and down a little bit scary. The drive (about 15 minutes) is not recommended after night fall, or in wet weather.
A problem: change of ownership has left a big dent on the Palazzo's atmosphere. We felt less of being "paying guests" received and cared for with warm hospitality, and more of a "source of income" for the new Russian owners.

For those of you who are thinking of going to Palazzo Terranova, beware, as they have changed management and they are not honoring their financial obligations. We cancelled our reservation in March for a reservation in July and they have still not refunded our very large deposit. Despite repeated promises that they would refund the money, they still have not. Sad that they would act this way

We went to Palazzo Terranova after friends from work recommended it. It is somewhat in the countryside - hence a little drive from any big town. However, on arriving, everyone came out to greet us and knew who we were. This even included a little tiny spaniel - Horatio, who then came with us up to our room. It was our honeymoon and we treated ourselves to 2 days luxury. We were extremely lucky and got upgraded to the top sutie - which is simply amazing. We literally jumped around the room (s) It has 2 toilets, 3 sinks, 2 sofas and a chaise longue - not to mention the hand carved marble bath and the biggest 4 poster bed. We did not move from Terranova the whole time (in fact -due to its location I would not recommend it as a base to explore from - unless you like driving over an hour to get places.) Why go anywhwere - when it is so lovely there - up in the hills - quite and peaceful. Breakfast is plentiful and they have bowls of fruit that you can pick at in the day. Free internet access and generally a feel of going to someone's home. Service is great. Food is great - if on the expensive side. Expect to pay at least 150 euros for dinner, which includes a bottle of wine.
We loved it - a highlight of our honeymoon.

Our visit to Palazzo Terranova was the highlight of our Italian tour. Having spent 3 years planning our 2 month holiday our expectations were very high and these were met and exceeded in every way! We feel that we have found our Italian home and felt this from the moment we arrived at this hilltop Umbrian retreat.
Everyone who visits must experience a pizza time with Honor the chef. The pizzas are to die for and you sit at a communal table listening to the Italian chatter and comparing topping ideas with other guests and staff. This was definitely the 'memory' of our trip - we will return another October to try again the walnut and gorgonzola pizza! Unbelievable that the walnuts are picked straight from the nearby tree and within minutes Honor has created an unfogettable taste! And the view! We can only say that it must be seen to be believed.
We enjoyed also the attentive staff who helped us in every way and made our stay so comfortable - learning Italian phrases in the morning to help us with our journeys! And Byron, the black labrador who took us for our evening walks on the mountain trails - a little exercise so that we could indulge in the fresh pasta and amazing desserts every night.
At Palazzo Terranova we have found our 'home' in Italy and look forward to our next visit - we hope it's very soon!
