“A time to remember”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2014

A family occasion took us to the eastern Free State and our search for accommodation brought us to the Rose House, and what an outstanding choice this was. The twenty first birthday dinner for our twin nieces and the rest of the small group present provided an occasion which the twins will never forget, starting with the dignity of the surroundings, through the excellence of the menu in both concept and execution, to the warmth of John and Trish in attendance.

Our daily breakfasts over three days, and the wonderful sunny early winter days removed any excuse for us to stay in bed in our snug Vegetable Garden Flatlet, even though the bird life to be seen through the window may have been reason to tarry.

A word must be said about the eastern Free State - a well kept secret!. Starting with the rock formations on the Rose House property, to the views from the house, to the incredible vistas on the road to nearby Clarens, all spectacular and very beautiful - not to mention that the Golden Gate is only another 20 km or so from Clarens.

Room Tip: Would choose the Vegetable Garden Flatlet fot its close proximity to the house.

When you come here you come for the magnificant setting and the hospitality. Trish and John were wonderful hosts and our evening meal was top quality with fresh vegetables from the garden, local beef and local wine. You can go into their vineyard and see the grapes up close. We had a cabin off the main house that was large and comfortable. No internet in the room. The view from the room toward the mountains of Lesotho reminds one of southwest Colorado and southeast Utah.

We just spend 6 nights at the Rose House and it is one of the most wonderful tranquil places we have ever been to. The food, breathtaking view, guest cottages are of very high quality. John and Trish are truely wonderful hosts and the homecooking is to die for.

The fireplace in your own cottage with the beautiful sunsets and a glass on John's own red wine - makes this place a definate for a romantic winter getaway. Thank you both for making our trip very special.

Room Tip: The cottages overlooking the vinyards are beautiful

We stayed for four nights in late April 2014.
The spectacular setting, the welcome, the facilities, the food - all wonderful - Trish and John are fantastic hosts.
The chalet was prepared with attention to every detail for a comfortable stay; and it had a fabulous view. We looked out on part of the vineyard with the cliffs of 'Le France' on one side and in the distance The Malutis - ensure you see the sunrise!
If you're feeling energetic ask John to direct you up 'Le France' for an amazing panorama.
I'll be back.

Stayed for four nights in the company of Trish and John in their beautiful Rose House. The guest cottages are well appointed and comfortable, affording a quiet and luxurious stay. Wonderful meals are available in the tastefully restored farmhouse, with its verandah offering splendid views of a lovely garden and the mountans beyond. In the cooler weather, the fireplaces add a cheerful warmth to the cottages, the farmhouse sitting room, and the dining room. Go on, treat yourself; you won't do better, anywhere!

Room Tip: Ask for the self-catering cottages if you prefer, otherwise opt for one of the two newer units and t...

I have just had the most wonderful holiday in S.A. I stayed at the Rose house, what an awesome place, the views are breathtaking and if it's relaxation and tranquillity that you are looking for this place is a must. John and Trish are such warm, welcoming hosts and nothing is to much trouble. Trish serves the most wonderful food and along with John's wine which is produced by John himself it is the perfect place for fine wine and dining.
I will certainly be going back again and strongly recommend anyone visiting the Clarens/Fouriesburg area to experience The Rose House.
Thank-you both so very much.

We came for 2 nights, stayed for 3 and did a little detour on our way back from our travelling for an extra night at the Rose House. Beautiful scenery, very tasty and beautifully presented food. The wine was also excellent. Our chalet was spacious with superb views, a comfortable bed and a little fridge with fresh milk! Trish and John are perfect hosts and made us feel so welcome. They were also so helpful when we had our little problem with the car!
We do hope we can come back !
