“not clean”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2013

too crowded with dirty water - waste floating- lot of people at one spot - all kinds of waste found in the water - more over the path towards the beach with hundreds of shops throw out waste on the road and are blown into the beach by the wind, not good for a swim

“One of the Worst Beaches in South India”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

I have been visiting Velankanni for many years. Hygiene has been one of the worst in the country. I always wear close toed shoes here as the mud has bacteria which gives me almost immediate itching which will take many days to sort out. After the tsunami of 2004 the place was wiped clean. Unfortunately the filth is back. This is mainly due to all the shops especially the restaurant selling fish close to the beach that engorges all their filth direct to the sea. I have even seen the waiters wash the utensils in the hideous sea water. The water is quite calm and not very deep so is great for families and children. If only it were maintained. If you want to you can walk down about 100 m along the beach (either way) away from the road leading to the church where the water quality is slightly better for a decent swim. Even then don't be surprised if you catch some disease and then have to pray to Our Lady of Health to rescue you.
