“Still a good place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

I have reviewed this hotel before and it is still excellent . One small complaint. It desperately needs air con in the rooms. We are staying here in July 2013 and it is 30C and it is extremely hot. But still a great place to stop on your way from Calais to the South of France. We will however call again on our trips south.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

The appeal of the alleged 3-star status of the Noirlac Hotel lured me into driving an extra 25 kilometers from the equestrian competition I was photographing that weekend.

It was a mistake.

First off, the Noirlac looks like a nicely appointed roadside hotel, a bit like a Novotel could look, with a good sized car park. Things quickly change when you walk in. Inside, everything looks like an average roadside hotel, the likes of which abound everywhere in France, most of them with a 2-star rating at best. There is only one floor above the ground floor, but there is no elevator, and that is mandatory for a 3-star, regardless of how many floors you have. OK, taking the stairs to climb one floor was not a problem for me, but I could imagine some old folks, carrying a heavy suitcase, for whom this WILL be a problem. The Reception lady readily offered her help (which is a telltale sign that this was not the first time the issue was raised…), but again it’s not the point: in a 3-star, there should be an elevator.

The corridors are also very ordinary, the rooms are OK but basic. Once again, everything here shouts “2 stars!”, and it’s not a bad hotel for a 2-star. It’s just that it’s a major disappointment when you expect 3-star treatment. The bedroom looked clean, except for the remnants of some dead insect bodies squashed on the walls, and if you looked into the drawers, it became obvious that if corners had wanted to be clean, they should have come forward... The bed was comfortable but narrow, like those ordinary 2-place French beds that are only 1.40 meters wide. The sole window was very small, once again like all of them in those 2-star, roadside hotels, and made the room quite cavernous.

The bathroom was small and really showing its age (see photo of the sink). The faucets were vintage 1980s and you wouldn’t risk drowning from the amount of water they poured forth…! The shower head was newer, probably replaced after the period one finally broke down completely, but like the rest it was very ordinary in terms of quality.

The sole good point was the internet: easy, fast, no authentication nightmares, in one word: excellent. Otherwise, the Noirlac is an ordinary 2-star (if they’ve managed to grab a 3rd star, I don’t know by which standards but not mine!), and for that level of quality, 75 euros per night, which seemed a good deal for a 3-star, change into a rather pricey affair for what the hotel truly is.

I advise against staying there at that price (move it back down to 55 or so and we’ll see), and I advise staying there at any price if you’re used to, and expecting, 3-star quality and services.

We were driving up from Avignon to Paris via the Millau viaduct. We chose this hotel because it is close to Paris for the last drive ( about 3 hours). We got of the motorway and headed into town and immediately fell in love with the real fighter jet mounted on a roundabout. A bit further on and we came to the hotel. It is set back from the road and is quiet. The rooms are ok ( don't expect air conditioning). Then we went down to the pool. Wow, what a setting. Chairs and sun loungers set up around a sparkling pool with a view down to the river. What every movie uses as typical French countryside. A glass of wine by the pool and then dinner by the pool. What a way to relax before the last push to Paris. This is not a 4+ star hotel, but it is friendly, in a great setting and good value.
And yes the cat is friendly.

Very good hotel for a stopover from Channel Tunnel . Have already recommended to friends who have stopped 3 times on way to their property near Agde

Room Tip: Get one facing the Lake & pool.

This is not your Paris Hilton so with that said this is a great place to stay; Where these days can you go where the owner greets you at your table and is genuinely happy to see to your needs? The staff does not speak English well but hey - this is France, and their English was better than my French by a long shot! So if you want a clean room without pretenses where the food is great give this place a try if you happen to occasion the area.

Stopped here on our return back to blighty even though i did manage to book wrong date on internet. only 5 mins from motorway, on outskirts of St Amand. Set around a lake with small outdoor pool, tennis court (hard to work out if hardcourt or grass so dont come intending to play tennis) veg patch and friendly hotel cat. Resturant was excellent, spent more in resturant than on room,
Room clean and tidy with bath. 71 euros per night for a double room only breakfast extra. wished i'd done half board. Intermache, carrefour and macdonalds within walking distance while st amand is a good 20min walk (Which missus can testify to(moan about) as she was not wearing suitable footware, whatever that is for a woman) or 5 min drive, but has a few nice shops and bars around the square
All in all a very pleasant overnight stop over, plus a good place to stockup on your wine before you leave.
