“Brekkeseter - a place you simply want to return to”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2011

We have visited Brekkeseter both summer and winter and in both seasons it is beautiful and well situated – and if you want to use the restaurant, the food is simply fantastic!

In the winter you step into the ski track that runs immediately in front of the "seter" cottages. Brekkeseter is the "seter" which is closest to the beautiful national park of Rondane, so when you leave the cottage you are already in the mountains.
In the summer the area offers lovely walks through the astonishing moutains. If you are lucky you can collect mushrooms and berries galore!

The cottages have a character of their own: they mainly consist of beautiful old log cottages which have been dismantled, moved to the "seter" and have been carefully restored so that they are now equipped with modern conveniences AND have kept their original charm.

The owners are incredibly welcoming and friendly; they also organize mountain walks and serve home-made food of an exceptionally high quality.

In short, Brekkeseter is a place you simply want to return to again and again...

We stayed only one night at Brekkeseter while travelling though Gudbrandsdalen in Norway but it made a great impression. We were lucky with the weather and were able to take advantage of the fantastic mountain trail network right on our doorstep. We rented one of the hotels cabins which were very well equiped. The hotel provided an excellent meal - the night we were there they prepared Sea Trout Ceviche, Reindeer Steak and Creme Brulee - we had not expected a gourmet dinner but were happily surprised!
If you want a base for mountain hiking or just a special place to overnigh on your travels in Norway you can not go wrong by staying here.

Room Tip: If you are a family - go for one of the cabins

We spent 3 nights in the Bamsebu cottage that is part of the hotel and cottages complex Brekkeseter. Great and friendly service by the owners Setsaas. Nothing seemed to be an issue. The cottage could sleep 6, had a full equipped kitchen, with induction cooking plate, good oven, fireplace etc. We had a dog with us and that was not a problem. Great views from the cottage on the surrounding mountains, great hikes, need good hiking boots, as there is water everywhere. Weather can change very quickly here, unfortunately we had a lot of rain. Great horse rides for experienced riders, sheep sometimes roam in front of the cottage. At night it is very quiet, so perfect.

A lovely place full of Norwegian folk tale charm, where you can follow the paths of Peer Gynt and Kristin Lavransdatter (on nicely groomed ski trails). Charming old (ours--1792!) but very comfortable cabins, and friendly, helpful hosts--both of whom have lived in the U.S.--both excellent cooks. The food is beautifully presented and prepared local and regional dishes--delicious! Skiing: great! Wood fired sauna: hot! Sleeping, listening to the howling wind: sweeps you away to a fairytale time in a faraway place. We're already planning a return, and bringing friends next time.

With an exceptional location, excellent food and a lovely family who owns and put their life into this mountain lodge at the edge of one of Norways´ most beautiful national parks makes this a mus seet on your 2 week trip to Norway.

The new years eve buffet: Graved moose/elk, reindeer, trout, salmon and other homemade game. That was the best meal I´ve eaten..

The service was very kind and helpful, the cabins were very nice, the nature was fantastic and the food was... absolutely superb! Even good connections for them without car (train from Oslo to Otta and then bus to Høvringen).

We fell in love with Brekkeseter the moment we saw it. And our feeling became stronger when we walked in to the cottage we would stay in. With our 9 months old daughter we stayed for two nights and we enyojed every moment. When we looked out the window the first morning two sheeps was eating their breakfast just outside and when we walked out the cabbin a horse stood by the door. Our daughter was fascinated by the animals and we by her. It was a lovely stay with wonderful nature and great view.
We had our own food but once we ate at the hotel restaurant. It was a wonderful dish and service!
