It seemed all the reviews for Hibiscus House were fantastic. We booked because we read "Holistic Treatments are available for residents and daily guests of Hibiscus House...." the owner apparently is a "trained clinical holistic therapist". As a therapist myself I thought this would be lovely.
Day one; on hearing and seeing the way the owners treated the staff I started to have my doubts. No holistic therapist would treat people in such a degrading manner!! Sure enough it continued throughout the two weeks we stayed there. All the other guests we met and became friends with, commented too. They were quite disgusted! My friend asked almost daily about getting reflexelogy but was put off each time!!
The staff and the lovely people we met made our stay there so worthwhile. Hibiscus House was built by the locals and the owners and it is lovely. It is tranquil and the food is lovely. The chef is great.
If you want to go out of the hotel and explore Gambia don't use the hotel's taxis. We found a local driver who will charge a realistic price. The hotel arranged a taxi for us and the driver tried to charge us the equivalent of a month's wages!! D900 (dalasi) for a short trip to Serrekunda and back!! The locals pay 25 dalasi for a gili gili and the taxi no more than 50 dalasi, at a push 100 dalasi so that gives you an idea, the people arranged by the hotel are charging far too much.
Going on one of the hotel trips will also turn out to be extremely costly and perhaps not what you might expect. You may find yourself asking if you have actually gone on the correct excursion, then soon realise you've been "had" again. We foolishly went on a "fishing trip" which again was arranged by a friend of the owner. The price was agreed and off we went. The boat was described as authentic, a top deck where you could sun-bathe and a lower deck where you could have a cool drink and then lunch on the river. When we were boarding the rickety old dug out with an old curtain thrown over two bits of wood I wondered if we were going on the right boat. As we sailed out of the "harbour" I had my doubts. We were on the rickety old boat for 4 hours, we caught a few fish and endured the battering to death a very large eel!!! I finally asked what part of the boat the toilet was allocated, as there was no toilet, and was directed to a board with a 45 degree angle straight to the river!! The men on the boat sang in unison for me!! Lunch? No! Cool drinks? No! But the guy did bring 6 little bags of water so we had one each. We didn't take anything with us because apparently, it was all provided! This was 1000 dalasi each. Then the 800 dalasi taxi fare.
The hotel arranged a musical troup from Mali to come and play for us while we had dinner. They were great. Again, on our bill was an extortionate amount of money for the evening. My suggestion is find your own entertainment. It is out there but try to find someone you can trust to go with you if necessary. We have details of some locals you can totally trust to help you out.
Having said all that, the place is nice and you will enjoy being there. Hopefully, the owners will have changed the way they treat the staff and the staff will be happier. It is a very good team. They will help you out with anything.
