“An Enjoyable Wrap-up to Our Honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2013

We stayed at Kewarra in September. The accommodations were very nice, and we enjoyed the relaxed setting. The meals were also quite enjoyable. The staff was friendly and helpful as well.

We used this as our hopping off point for the Great Barrier Reef, and while the bus ride to our ship in Port Douglas took a while, we didn't mind-- we were looking for something quiet and secluded!

Thanks for the hospitality, Kewarra!

My husband & I and our two teenage girls (16 & 14) arrived in the afternoon on a Thursday. It was raining. We were met at the check-in counter by Ada who gave us a quick history of the Timara suite which we had booked. Thereafter, we were served the 'welcome' drink prepared by Ada too. On first impression, Kewarra Beach Resort & Spa seemed promising. It was nestled at the edge of a residential neighbourhood within a tropical rainforest with big trees. It was charming, to say the least. We were brought to our room by the bellhop. We were given 2 umbrellas to share while he used a rain poncho. The path to our villa started well enough but as we got deeper, the concrete path turned to wet sandy track with puddles we had to trudge over. It was not pleasant.

Our villa was entirely made of wood. It had 2 bedrooms separated in between by a family room which had a pantry with a kettle, fridge, coffee plunger as well as some plates, cutlery & knife. No microwave, no hob. There was a flat screen TV and wi fi throughout the resort. The rooms were airconditioned and fans everywhere. They were charming with old-fashioned lights and furniture. Mattress was a rather soft but decent. Bathroom had all the basics like bath, face, hand towels, and bath mat, shampoo, conditioner, body wash & body lotion. There was a hairdryer. Water pressure was good and housekeeping standards was passable. Big problem was that there were no plugs in the bedroom and so we had to charge our phones & electronics on the single socket in the bathroom. Access to rooms & safe are with actual keys. The verandah area is very pleasant with dining and ample lounge furniture for all of us. As villa was made almost entirely of wood, the noise transfer between rooms was quite apparent and floors creaked when walking. Flushing was also a noisy affair. There is a self-service laundromat located in the main building.

The grounds of the resort was essentially left quite natural which some will find attractive while others not. I quite liked it as this meant the animals were happy to be there. So almost everyday, we came across wallabies, wombats, different species of birds, etc.

The first day we arrived, since it was wet & we didnt know our way around, we had dinner in the hotel restaurant. My dish was alright but the others did not enjoy their meals at all. To top it off, for what they were, they were terribly expensive. That was the first & only time we ate there, except breakfast, which came with the room. Breakfast was from 6-10am. It was pretty standard fare with fruits, cereals, eggs, etc. What was disappointing though was that it was mango season and there were even mango trees growing on the resort grounds, yet not once did we see mangoes served, as fruit or juice. Instead, what was served were orange and tropical juices which were tasteless and probably came out of a carton.

The beach was near and open to the public as well, although it was not a busy beach. We were advised not to swim there except in between the safety flags due to presence of jellyfish & potentially crocs! The beach was clean but nothing to write home about. There were sand flies at certain times. The resort pool was the same.

Kewarra Beach Resort & Spa is ideal for those who would like a return to nature and dont expect too much of the frills one might associate with the word 'resort' and 'spa'. 'Rustic' is how I'd say best describes it.

Having a rental car would be ideal as the resort is not near enough to the restaurants or the other attractions.

We stayed in Kewarra for three nights and had a great time there. We had a beach front bungalow with a wonderful view and the two pools were amazing.  We particularly enjoyed the Friday night pizza night with music. We also tried Yoga and Tai Chi by the beach, which was also a great experience. All in all, we felt our stay was very relaxing.

Ce from 2 nights on Green island and what a welcome change. Secluded and peaceful with a great beach right in front of the room on stilts! Chose the basic beach bungalow and it is perfect. Simple living! The reception and bar pools and restaurant are beautifully done providing luxury when you need it. I will be back!

My husband and I went for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary and it was simply beautiful, from the stunning surrounding natural gardens to the gorgeous rock pools and delicious food. The treatment at the day spa was also really special and we felt very pampered. Kewarra has it's own beautiful section of private beach and the cute little beach shack bar and restaurant is very nice too. We rented a Pandanus Deluxe Bungalow and it was very private, clean and comfortable with a very nice bathroom. What made the experience extra special was the friendly, warm and professional service by all the staff. Thank you Kewarra for a great weekend. We wish we could have stayed longer but even the short break left us feeling relaxed and renewed. We will be back!

I almost gave Kewarra a 4, but I think overall this place is over-hyped (including in the guide books). It is not an elegant place. The bungalows are quite basic, more like cabins, and are simply appointed. I don't think this place aims to be anything more, but we went expecting something else from what we had read. The pluses, which are major, include an amazing location "away from it all" (a ten-minute drive to the restaurants in Palm Cove), two pools built around rocks, and a generous breakfast (we didn't try dinner; it seemed expensive even by Great Barrier Reef standards). Staff was mixed: When we checked in, no one offered to help us with bags (and it can be quite a distance to the cabins). But everyone was nice and offered advice when asked. This place could be much more, but as is, it provided a good base for our activities up that way.

Room Tip: We stayed right on the beach. Other cabins are back a bit in the rain forest. You probably can't...

We found this hotel in tripadvisor, and everything was exactly as expected. clean, private, romantic (we were there 4 days during our honey moon). the bungalow are so nice, surrounded by the tropical forest and the pools are unbelievable. it is a pity we could not swim in the sea due to the presence of the jelly fish during the summer (there is a protection net but not 100% sure). but everything else absolutely fantastic. we hope to be back one day
