“nice hotel, good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

the rooms were large and very cozy. unique style, thanks to the age of the building. the only drawback would be that the beds are incredibly soft. some may like this but my sister did not and called it the 'bowl bed' throughout our trip! the building is old, but with modern refurbishment, and thank goodness the bathrooms were very modern also! we had dinner at the hotel restaurant the one night that we spent in baarlo (venlo for FLORIADE 2012) and thoroughly enjoyed the set dinner. good free WiFi connection. very picturesque grounds with outdoor garden and conservatory, perfect for the summer. a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: some of the rooms are near the hotel housekeeping's service area which didnt cause us any proble...

Recently stayed here for two nights, according their web site the rooms, we had de suite, have te comfort for noe a days. For me it was a long time ago i saw a mobile ventilator unit insteed of airco. But the staff is verry friendly and the place is clean. Don't try the kitchen if you don't have to. My advice, there are much better castle hotels in the area.

We visited the nearby Floriade and were recommended the Sandton by a Dutch work colleague, I'll seek their advice again, because this was a great find. We booked a Floriade D,B&B package with a basic room, but on arrival we were given a room upgrade, result! If you like fine dining, good food, but with no pretentiousness, then the De Raay serves it up in fine style. Excellent service, given with a smile and very good English by all. Lovely room with a massive bathroom and double bath, but no where to hang towels, minor point though. 'Public' areas are spacious and comfortable, while it's great to stroll round the lovely gardens and visit the on site Art Gallery. We'd recommend the De Raay to you with no hesitation and would stay again if the opportunity arose.

We had this hotel by chance, because the other hotel was overbooked. So we came in the dark night and didn't know what to expect. Is was a very good surprise with this nicely renovated chateau and when we got one of the art rooms we were even more pleasantly surprised. We didn't expect such a rich decoration in a classical building. Even the toilet was filled with art.
The beds were big and very soft - in a good way - no back problems, it was just like floating on air. The best beds I ever tried. (But maybe I was just very, very tired)

Room Tip: The art room is inspiring and funny but if you should live in these overwhelming colors a long time...

We come every year. The staff are very friendly. Maybe the most beautiful hotel. We love this style! If there is an event nearby, you will be massively over charged. Our favourite room has a window in the ceiling that can't be covered, so bring eye covers! We recommend the experience....

This lovely old convent served as a very peaceful and pleasant place to stay when we visited the Netherlands for the 2012 Floriade expo. Our room was large and comfortable (as was the bed) with a view over the courtyard (so we woke to the sound of birds singing), and a fabulous power shower in a well-presented and rather stylish bathroom. However, the minibar was empty (but will be filled upon request) and the TV was a bit antiquated.

Dinner on Saturday night was served on the terrace, and whilst service was slow, the food was delicious, and overall a very enjoyable (though expensive) experience. Dinner on Sunday night was served in the conservatory; equally expensive but unfortunately most of the dishes on the menu were not available, which was disappointing. It did occur to us that the hotel might do well to offer a more informal menu as well as the formal and taster menus, as they would be more likely to attract the local residents, who are unlikely to pay 150 euros for a meal for 2.

We found the breakfasts more than adequate; offering sliced meats, cheese, pastries, fresh bread, croissants, scrambled eggs, bacon, fresh rolls, fruit, etc.

Service throughout was impeccable, and reception were helpful in printing off our boarding cards for the flight home. The route to the hotel is very strange (through a housing estate), and we did find it odd that the exit from the car park at the rear was not in use as it was a far more convenient way to access the major roads.

In the unlikely event that we find ourselves in this part of the Netherlands again, I would definitely stay here again.

Apart from visiting Floridade, we also drove north to Antwerp and then to Gent; both of which are worth a visit - particularly the old town and canals of Gent.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard.

We spent a lovely weekend at Chateau de Raay. Throughout the 2 night stay the staff were all very pleasant, professional and friendly. We stayed in one of the more classical and higher priced Castle rooms. Some nice details with old beams, but only the bathroom really stood out. The room was nice and comfortable but the beds were too soft for our liking. The two chairs in the sitting corner were both in need of a thorough cleaning or reupholstering, but nothing too shocking.
Our first night was disturbed by the staff if the restaurant leaving to go home at 1AM. Granted, it was warm outside so our windows were open, but some courtesy from the kitchen staff would have been appreciated.
The Wintertuin restaurant was excellent, albeit on the expensive side, as was our high tea on sunday.
All in all i would recommend Chateau de Raay to anyone. As with almost any hotel, it would be 5/5 if they fixed the details.
