My family spend 3 nights in the garden bungalows. (we had a double which was good for us, some of the gardens are singles). There is a minor difference in the categories of bungalows, the cheaper ones in the back are just fine. The grounds are small. The rooms were nice, comfortable, and in a local flavor (I was nervous they would be chain hotel decor, but I was wrong). Rooms had Tv's, refrig, AC
We are divers, and the reason to go here is to dive or snorkel, and we were not disappointed. We will probably come back to do more diving, it was that good. Both our kids did their first dives. The hotel only refers to "6 passengers", but we used "Top Dive" Gaby, the activity coordinator helped us arrange it, but he was not forthcoming about other activities that weren't affiliated with the hotel. He was off 2 of the 3 days we were there, so we were on our own for any other activities.
Beach: The "Beach" is broken up coral. Don't expect sand. Bring sandals to walk to the waters edge. There is fresh water shower. there are lounge chairs and towels are available in the rooms. There is a dock to watch the fish from at night. The snorkeling right from the beach is OUTSTANDING. Great fish and good corals. We brought our own snorkeling gear to French Polynesia, that was a good call, because the quality we saw everywhere was poor.
Food: the best part is there is a grocery literally next door. So we ate breakfast and lunch from there. Even bought our cocktails. The hotel food service was very slow, food was Ok, not great, but expensive. Kids menu was one of the best we found. I guess I was frustrated that every meal had to be an expensive affair, there was no inexpensive way to eat (at least without a car to visit some of the snacks in town, which mostly looked closed). We ate 2 dinners down the street at Le Kai Kai. What can it say, it was excellent!! and somewhat reasonably priced. It is about a 10 minute walk away, or they will pick you up for free. We were hoping to have the kids eat pizza at Vaimamo across the street, but it was closed the whole time we were there.
The hotel had no record of our prepaid reservation of 2 rooms when we arrived, and tried to tell us they would have to put our family of 4 in one room for the night. I held my ground, and 2 side by side rooms appeared. I don't know where this attitude came from, the hotel was 2/3 empty!!! Fortunately an Italian couple translated for us, because the staff's English and Spanish was poor. It costs something like $17 per person for a transfer from the airport, when it is about 1 mile away, these are the charges that I just don't understand.
All in all, I'd come back to dive, would eat again at Le Kai Kai, and enjoy this sleepy atoll, which has a very nice local feel. The big excitement was watching the weekly cargo boat unload goods! Get here before too much changes.
