“French influence in Thai food ***Very Good***”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

Very nice restaurant and an excellent service.

The place is very cosy and clean. The owners are very nice and warm. You feel like home. You can read some nice books, magazines and play games, ... A real happy and zen place.

The food was excellent. You feel the french inspiration and influence in the thai food. And the fusion of the two cultures is quiet extraordinary good.

We recommend you this place if you seek a place to feel home and enjoy food.

This is a superbly put together resort that has a very personal touch. From the presentation of the restaurant with its sculptures, photos, inlaid tables and floors, to the purpose built massage space looked after by Thailands only gentle masseuse(very very good) and the well thought out gardens. They've thought of it all. The bungalows are simple but again well executed. Though it would be nice to have some warm water in the showers. We stayed in the family bungalow further up behind the restaurant, and to be honest the beds were just a tad firm for me. I do like a firm bed, but an extra layer of sponge would've made it perfect. The food is expensive for Thailand, but some dishes were just excellent. So... you pay for what you get. Compared to the other resorts on the same beach, Oon Lee are miles ahead. We went on a tour of the Islands by Long Tail and it was a fun day. Worth the exploration. You need to take books with you to keep entertained. I think around 4 days would be the perfect length of stay if I were to go again. Don't book your own tickets to leave in advance, Oon will go out of his way to arrange the easiest and nicest options for you. A beautiful spot to unwind. Take friends with you for the best experience possible.

Firstly - watch out for the link to book rooms...this does NOT go to Oonlee bungalows..find their site here ( http://kohjumoonleebungalows.com/) and email Valerie. I have tried to see a link to inform Tripadvisor, but can't see an easy way to get this off this page...).

I agree with the review before - this is a really lovely place, made all the better by the warm welcome of Oon and Valerie.

We had the Nero at the beach for the first three nights, then moved to the bungalow close to the restaurant. Both were lovely - especially the Nero, as we could hear the sea during the night.

Our entire stay felt like a house-party, chatting to other guests and getting to know our hosts. The resort is very clean and well kept and cared for. We tried to have something different off the menu ever night, and each meal was delicious.(Valerie explained the ingredients etc, which was really helpful!!).

- The cocktails and wine are fab too ! ).

We hired a Kayak and went down the entire side of the island stopping at interesting resorts on the way..The Jungle resort is very 'authentic' and we had a 'hot' Thai dish for lunch, much to the merryment of all in the restaurant.

The Koh Jum Villas/bungalows also had a lovely bar for lunches.

Many beaches were deserted and beautiful.

The massage was also fantastic - gentle and relaxing (compared to the massages in Bangkok!!).

Valerie and Oon arranged our departure and arrival by longboat/taxi, - well worth it...

All in all, I would recommend this place, and if I have the money to return to Thailand would certainly consider returning. I have reccommnded it to my family!,

We had an amazing three days on Koh Jum - we were first staying in Ao Nang but we decided that we wanted to get away from all the tourists somewhere more private, this was the perfect place. It was a bit of a trip getting there - Taxi to Laem Kruat - Longtailboat to Koh Pu and then Taxi/Motorcycle to Oon Lee Resort. The resort is run by a French/Thai couple - Valerie and Oon, we were so lucky to find this place. The location is amazing and there was lots of attention to detail, and the food (as other reviews mention a bit more pricy, but I think still ok (average meal around 180B)) was really amazing (best food of our whole trip), especially the fish carpaccio and red curry. The views are beautiful and now outside of the high-season we were sometimes entirely by ourselves on the beach. Valerie and Oon were so friendly and welcoming and they were extremely helpful when we had questions about our trip, they organized our whole trip back to Krabi airport - on that particular day we were quite unlucky with the rain (it was raining a lot) - Oon packed up our suitcases in plastic bags so our things wouldn't get wet, they got up extra early so we could have breakfast before we left and Oon personally drove us to the ferry - then they organized for us to drop our bags with their friends while visiting Krabi before our flight. They really took great care of us. In the resort you can go swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, walking, enjoy the beach and there are plenty of hammocks to read and relax. They have games and books - so there is always plenty to do. They offer trekkings to the mountain and trips to islands (we didn't do those as we had been traveling a lot and we just wanted to relax a bit). I would recommend this place to all my friends - we really had an amazing time and we are so thankful to Valerie and Oon for their wonderful hospitality.

Room Tip: Ask for a bungalow with sea view - we stayed in one with garden view the first night (as the others...

If you want a place where you can take it easy, this is the place. No big resorts, no tourist traps, just nature and Thailand as it is. The place is run as a family place, with a maximum of 25 guests at any time, so everyone knows everyone and the hosts are very nice.
Val (who owns the place with her husband Oon) will take the time to go through everything with you, whether it be activities or the menu. They are also extremely honest and are not pushy which was much appreciated.
The food is great, although a bit expensive by Thai standard (150-200THB per dish for lunch/dinner, breakfast 130-190THB) but all resorts/bungalows around charge the same except for small beach shacks.
The bungalows are a bit small but this is not a big issue as one is out all day and each one has a terrace. The beach just below the resort is not a sandy one but there is exactly this about 10 min walk down the beach and there are also all the beaches you can access with the kayaks (available for rent for around 100THB/h).
To get to/from there, you will need to get to Krabi, get a cab to the yellow boat pier and then catch either the public ferry (70THB) or organise a private boat with Val. If you take the public option, once you arrive on Koh Jum (or Koh Jam - you will see both) you will then need to take a tuktuk to the hotel (under 200THB) but Val can organise this for you.
To summarise: ant for party goers, this is a remote, nice and quiet place, worth being discovered.

This is Thailand as you rarely see it these days - no sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach, no vendors trying to sell you things, just quiet, unspoiled beaches, small resorts strung along the shoreline, and a beautifully relaxed atmosphere.
Oon Lee bungalows are in an amazing spot, with lovely cottages (we stayed in the Nemo bungalow nearest the beach, which was gorgeous) dotted up the hillside on the way to the fantastic restaurant at the top - don't believe the sign at the bar that says 26.5 steps....you definitely earn your dinner by the time you get up there! Valerie and Oon couldn't have been better hosts - very welcoming and accommodating, somehow remembering everybody's name even tho it was fully booked the whole time we were there. Oon is a fantastic chef - the specials he produces every night are exceptional - the prawn carpaccio was out of this world!
Koh Jum, and Oon Lee Bungalows are the perfect spot for complete relaxation and recharging your batteries, as long as you don't end up trying to work your way through the cocktail list at the beach bar...... Thank you Valerie and Oon for a fantastic 4 days, and Enda, it was lots of fun to catch up again, thanks for the craic and all those mango fruitshakes... :-)

Room Tip: Nemo Bungalow is closest to the beach, and absolutely beautiful.
