5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012

We could not fault the experience we had, from the minute we arrived, the hospitality, accommodation, food, our ranger Werner, the game and Veronique and her team.
A most memorable experience and highly recommended.

Room Tip: Stayed at Hlosi in a family room which was excellent. We don't think that they have a fitness c...

Thanks for choosing Hlosi and for your great review. We're very glad to hear that Veronique and Werner looked after you so well - they are stars. Your note about the gym made me smile: we probably should get one to help us all deal with all the willpower-challenging food at Hlosi. I always say I'll resist, but never do. So we'll look into that, for our own sakes as much as for our guests! Best regards from the Hlosi team and the Bailey family.

Wow what a wonderful spot to get away from it all. Loved the little lodges we each got to stay in and the room was so cozy! Wish I could have tried the outside shower but it was too chilly that early in the morning but what fun to sleep under the net in the night. Reminded me when I first went on safari as a little girl! The main lodge was very inviting after our game ride and the dinner was wonderful with the roaring fire. If you asked me would I recommend this spot for sure, very friendly, clean and away from it all.

Room Tip: I would go earlier in the year so you can enjoy the outside and pool area and stay for more than one...

Thanks for staying with us and for posting such a lovely review. It's great to have such good feedback, especially from such a seasoned Safari-ist (I liked the memory of your girlhood safaris under mosquito nets). We hope we get to welcome you back in the summer sometime, so that you can enjoy those outside showers. Best regards from the Hlosi team and the Bailey family.

Thanks for choosing Hlosi, and thanks for taking the trouble to post a review. We'd like to apologise for the extra kilos picked up at the lodge: we have the same problem... Hope to see you and your family again for some more good times and good food! Thanks and best regards from the Hlosi team and the Bailey family

Over the years I have travelled in South Africa on varied safari activities, I have never seen anyone mix safari/wildlife/wilderness with children – Hlosi does this brilliantly. Set on the Amakhala reserve, an easy hours drive from Port Elizabeth, you are welcomed into the Hlosi family with warmth and kindness.

We don’t like separate family holiday with kids booked into clubs for the day, we like to spend time together; Veronique and her team were very happy to let our 5 and 2 year old join in too. I was completely amazed that our loud, rowdy two year old boy sat through a 3 hour game drive, listened to the ranger, was quietly awed by seeing a pair of lions and then managed dinner with the other guests in a five star dining room. Clearly the respect and inclusion that is Hlosi rubbed off on our little monster.

What I loved is that you can leave the crush of Heathrow in the evening, and by the next afternoon you are on the plains of Africa sipping a gin and tonic, while your two suburban children are hopping around pretending to be spring haasies or termites building termite hills.

Hlosi camp is lovely, the right mix of luxury, bush and comfort. I have been trying to think of any negatives or cons to include in this review; the only one I can come up with is price. But when you consider everything is included, it doesn’t work out as being exorbitant. The obvious question is would we go again? Yes, to both Hlosi and Amakhala, there is a lot more to explore.

Now of I could just get the Hlosi chickpea soup recipe.

Ah, what a brilliant review! Thank you for staying with us, and for taking the time to post a review. It makes all the difference to us. The feedback you've given us on our Kids Safari is much appreciated: we've been working really hard on getting it right, and the whole team was really encouraged by your comments. As you may know, we're a family-owned company, and all of the brothers and cousins have been raising young kids over the years we've been building Lion Roars. So it's been close to our hearts to create places where families can have fun and relax together in a beautiful context. It means a great deal to us that you felt the magic too. Thank you. Hope to welcome you back sometime soon. Best regards from the Bailey family

We stayed 3 nights at Hlosi with our 3 young children (6, 3 and 1 year old), our nanny and 2 parents. We all had a wonderful and relaxing time and outdoor experience. We had our own cottage with 2 bedrooms (with large en-suites), a living area, a porch and outdoor jacuzzi.

The lodge exceeded our expectations in many ways:
- small and intimate with personal attention for all guests
- excellent wildlife watching by 4x4 and by boat (lion, rhino, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, zebra, many different gazelles, hyena, warthog but also many smaller animals incl kingfisher, darter, hoopla, fish eagle, lizards etc)
- child friendly: all 3 of our young children joined the game drives and experienced / enjoyed the wildlife and nature, and between the game drives there were activities for children at the lodge (painting animals, collecting items from nature, cooking etc. but also swimming in the pool)
- flexible and patient staff: times of game drives and activities were adapted to guest preferences and lots of patience with the many questions fired by our children at our guide
- excellent culinary experience: breakfast, brunch, tea, picnics and dinner were all delicious. And the Amarula hot chocolate after the game drives was superb
- contributing to conservation of endangered species and to the broader community

We hope to be back either with our without our children and would definitely recommend to others!

We loved your review! thank you very much for staying with us and for going to the trouble to post a review. We appreciate your support very much. I especially like the fact that you gave us a chance to test our ability to create a good holiday for a 6 year old, a 3 year old and a 1 year old :) It's great to hear about your experience with us. Glad you liked the family suite: we always try to stay in one of these too, when our teenagers are with us at Hlosi, and it's good to hear that it worked for your family too. We look forward to welcoming you back for another family holiday, or for a romantic break. All the best from the Hlosi Team and the Bailey Family.

We stayed here for 2 nights in November 2011 as part of a tour of SA and so glad we did. Although it rained almost constantly during our stay this didn't spoil what was an amzing place.

We arrived just after lunchtime on the first day and were met at the front door by the on-duty manageress who arranged a drink for us as well as someone to park our car and transport our bags to the "room" and that set the tone for the level of service we received for the rest of our stay (by the way we had a regular hire car and had no problem driving through the game park to reach the Lodge which was a slight concern for us before we arrived!).

The room itself was more of a detached cottage than a room. Large, with a seating area and terrace to sit out on it felt very romantic and away from it all. All the rooms are set out along boardwalks from the main hotel area and because it's completely open to the animals you get a personal escort back to your room after dark just in case....

For our game drives we had the very excellent Deanne who was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and obviously loved what she was doing. This made it all the more interesting as we ticked off the anmals one by one over the 2 days - Elephant, Zebra, Rhino, Cheetah, Lion, Antelope galore and many, many more besides. There's also plenty of birdlife if that's what interests you. The park is relatively small but for the 2 days (4 game drives) that we were there it provided more than enough variety. Seeing the Cheetah with 5 slightly older cubs was undoubtedly the highlight.

Back at the lodge we found the food excellent and varied. There were only 4 other people staying there at the time we travelled so the staff were flexible about what they could cook (although we were perfectly happy with the default choices most of the time) and were always helpful and courteous.

As some people have previously mentioned this place is unusual in that it caters for kids and I would have no hesitation returning here myself or bringing my young son if he ever wanted an authentic African safari experience.

It's a double blessing for us to have rain on the reserve and to have guests who felt the magic of it. Thanks for your lovely review. We think there's a unique magic in the smells and sounds of rain on the Amakhala, and we're so glad you were able to experience this too. Thank you for choosing Hlosi as part of your journey, and for taking the trouble to post your review: it means a great deal to us. You're right, children are very welcome at Hlosi, and have a great Safari Kids programme that we tailor to each child's age and interests. We look forward to welcoming you back to Hlosi with your son in the near future. Best regards and thanks again, from the Bailey Family.

Stayed at Hlosi for 2 nights at the end of February with my wife and son (aged 9). The highlights of course were the game drives but the Lodge itself is fantastic with a brilliant staff. The quality of the food provided was truly excellent and sumptuous. We were lucky enough to witness many animals at close range from the Lodge and the sight of Elephants munching on the grass just a few feet away from the boardwalk will live long in my memory. Thankyou!
