Many years ago, I used to work in Chipping Sodbury, and one of my favourite restaurants was The Chinese Cuisine, in nearby Yate. From a friend I heard that this lovely restaurant had closed down a few years ago, but then heard the good news that the owner, Henry Wong, was now running a new restaurant in Chipping Sodbury. With this in mind I was looking forward to trying this restaurant when I was in the area.
Henry's Oriental is situated above the George Hotel in the town. The decor is very much a combination of ancient and modern. Whilst the tables and decor are of a very high, modern standard, you are sitting below the building's wonderful wood beams.
The starter was Phoenix and Dragon rolls. These are wonderful patties of chicken and prawns in Tempura batter, served with a drizzle of sauce over the top (see the picture. I'd eaten one before I remembered to take a photograph!). The flavours were wonderful and the combination unusual.
The main course was Sweet and Sour Pork, Hong Kong Style with Egg Fried Rice. Whenever I try a new Chinese restaurant, I always order this, as it is a dish that I know well and I can use it as a benchmark to compare against other establishment. It is also my favourite Chinese dish. I have to say, with only one exception, this is the best I have tasted. The pork was perfect and the sauce was a wonderful balance of the two flavours.
Throughout my visit the service was very good indeed. Helpful and attentive without being intrusive. This is despite the restaurant being in multiple areas, being dictated by the confines of the building.
I am happy to say that Henry has brought his culinary magic to Chipping Sodbury and I will be visiting again when I'm next in town.
