“Ideal break on the journey across the highlands”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

We chose this hotel for an en route stop and were delighted with our choice. An easy drive from our arrival at Inverness airport, this welcoming small hotel with real ale on tap, lovely food and in a beautiful setting with walks from the front door was all that we could ask for. A whiskey expert as host encouraged us to sample from the temping range of single malts to round off our first night on holiday. What more could we have asked for? A comfortable bed, of course; a good breakfast to set us up for the following day, of course. Would we return, definitely if we are in this part of the world again.

Thank you for your lovely review. We really appreciate you taking the time to post your comments and are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us in this beautiful part of the world.

it is very encouraging to hear your comments on how comfortable the beds are, and how much you enjoyed the breakfast and evening meals. We only use top quality locally sourced ingredients which allows us to serve our food with confidence - we have a great chef too! We have increased our range of real ales and malt whiskies quite extensively over the past few years. We were extremely proud to be voted as joint winner in the CAMRA pub of the year award for this area. It seems more and more people are discovering the delights of real ales.
Hope you can return soon to try some more!

Had meal at hotel, after being turned away from Torridon Inn by some rather unhelpful bar staff. Meal and service were excellent, good alternative to Torridon Inn. Would definitely consider staying here as an alternative to the Torridon YH (nothing wrong with YH by the way).

Thank you for taking time to comment about the meal and service here at Kinlochewe Hotel. We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit and hope we will be able to welcome you again.
As well as the hotel we also have a bunkhouse should you need an alternative to the Youth Hostel at Torridon - the bonus being that our CAMRA award winning pub is next door serving good food, good ales and a great range of malt whiskies. Can we tempt you???

My mate and I stayed here for a night after four nights and five days walking and camping in the Fisherfield hills nearby.
The hotel was everything we needed after those days in the hills. The rooms were clean, and had comfortable beds; there was cracking beer in the bar (joint winners of the local Camra pub of the year 2013 award; and the food was really excellent.
I had scallops from local water, then a ribeye steak, which matched any other piece of meat I've eaten recently. It came with a delicious Dauphinoise, and fine, deep-tasting mushrooms.
Rounded the meal out with some Scots cheeses, all named and described to us by Gail, one of the proprietors. This included a pepper-encased goat's cheese, which would grace any cheeseboard and I still have the tang of a week later.
The breakfast next morning was equally excellent: sausages and bacon from a local butcher, rich black pudding and wonderful mushrooms again.
By the time we left the half-human meals you tend to eat on the hill were a distant memory.
Gail and Andrew were really welcoming: helpful, friendly and informative.
If we're back in the area we'd stay again.
I hope they keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your review. We are so pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay with us.

We are very fortunate to have some of the most wonderful local produce here in Wester Ross and we like to make use of it whenever we can. Our local butcher, Kenneth Morrison in Gairloch, supplies us with fantastic meat products and they make their own sausages, black pudding etc. which are always well received. We have some great local smokehouses and fish/seafood suppliers as well as award winning breweries who have helped us to achieve our coveted award. The cheeses we serve are all Scottish and all have their own individual character. It is lovely for us to have guests who enjoy what we offer.

Thank you for all your lovely comments - and we hope we will be able to welcome you back again soon.

Having enjoyed staying here a couple of years ago, I felt that standards had slipped.
The bar was still excellent, with a small selection of real ales, but the food was lackluster and overpriced.
My room was cramped, more or less filled by the double bed. The thin walls made for a poor night's sleep. As before, my employer was paying for my room, so I didn't have to stump up over eighty pounds for double room single occupancy.
There isn't a lot of choice in the area, something the owners are well aware of, but if you are travelling alone, it's a costly overnight stay.

I am sorry you felt that your stay did not meet your expectations. We certainly put in a huge effort to ensure our guests recieve a warm welcome, a comfortable stay and great food and we are upset to hear that you think our standards have slipped. Of course we take all feedback very seriously but I trust that the many great reviews we have recently received will balance out the less than positive one or two that every hotel seems to get on occasion.

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the bar. You may be aware that we were recently awarded joint winner of the CAMRA pub of the year for this area. The "small selection" of Real Ales we offer is actually far more than most pubs in the area - or indeed anywhere - with FIVE Real Ales on tap (which we change frequently to allow our customers a greater choice) plus a Real CIder.

We are sorry that the food we offer did not meet your expectations. We offer great quality local produce, cooked simply to retain the wonderful flavours. No "fast food", no "chips with everything" (we don't have any fryers!) and no"fine dining" - just (hopefully) good, homemade simple dishes made with great care on the premises. Of course it does not suit everybody but we do try!

We were amazed to read your comment about having a poor nights sleep as we have never had an issue before with guests commenting about thin walls - the hotel was built more than 150 years ago when walls were properly constructed and built to last! they are certainly not thinly constructed.

We do have single rooms available which offer the single traveller good value as so often people travelling alone are unable to get a single room and are charged full rate for a double room, which makes for an expensive stay. Our single rooms are very well used and much appreciated by lone travellers. Perhaps your employer would prefer you to have one of these rooms should you stay here again.

We do take great pride in our lovely historic hotel in this fabulous and unique area. We certainly try to ensure that all our guests enjoy their stay with us - but we do also have to accept the old adage that you cannot please all of the people all of the time!

Shabby corridor leading to our room did not bode well. Bedroom and bathroom with no window.
Bathroom door had to stay shut or else steam triggered fire alarm. Bedroom was cold, no heating in bathroom. Conservatory room next door... no heating.
Scott was charming and helpful as were the rest of the staff. Reasonable food. Excellent bar.

Room Tip: Bedroom and bathroom with no window!!!!!!

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your stay here. We are so pleased that you found the staff charming and helpful and that you enjoyed our award winning bar.

The corridor that led to your room is certainly on the list for a makeover - since we took over ownership we have taken the hotel from a one star grading to a three star grading - but, of course, it takes time to do everything that needs to be done. We hope we have concentrated on the most important parts of the hotel to upgrade first - the lounge, the bar, new beds, upgrading the fire and electrical systems etc. The room you had is actually one of most popular rooms - but it is a bit like Marmite - you either love it or hate it! The bedroom is somewhat smaller than our other double rooms (although it does still host a superking bed) but it does have the benefit of the private sunroom and its own entrance to the garden. The door to the sunroom is glass and lets in plenty of natural light to the bedroom and the window in the sunroom allows a through-flow of air. I cannot undertand why you did not turn up the radiator control in the room if you found it cold - or ask a member of staff to show you how. There was certainly no reason for you to be cold as the heating was on. There is an electric heater in the sunroom for guests to use as well.

The fire system in the hotel is designed for guests safety and peace of mind. Unfortunately it can sometimes be triggered by an excess of steam from the shower in that room. There is really nothing we can do about that other than ask guests to keep the bathroom door closed when showering (having set off an alarm when using the shower in a hotel in Aberdeen once, I know we are not alone in this problem! however, it seems a small price to pay for safety).

We hope that you will return - do request one of the larger double rooms upstairs if you wish (although, of course, these do not have a private sunroom).

We missed out on the last dog-friendly room here but came for dinner. Slightly comedy moment: as we arrived early (6.30pmish) we were told to take a seat whilst we waited and our names written in the restaurant bookings; only one other person in the bar; had a happy drink whilst we watched staff lay a couple of tables with reserved signs; then at 6.45pm got moved from our table to the table opposite with the reserved sign! Same thing happened to the one other patron! Not sure why we couldn't have stayed on the same identical tables, but anyway... Food was fine (nice bit of salmon, slightly disappointing shop style puddings) and atmosphere picked up with walkers staying at the hotel later filling more tables and barstools. It's trying hard to be a bistro and the prices reflect it, which is a bit over ambitious in my opinion. Friendly enough staff.

Thank you for taking the time to review us - and we are sorry that you missed out on our dog friendly room (it does get booked up so it is worth booking well ahead for this room). Thank you for coming back to eat with us though.

It may have seemed comical to you that you were asked to move tables but there is a reason! As you will have seen our handmade "jigsaw" tables are designed to be used as tables for two or joined together for tables of four or even six. Some of the tables cannot be separated and are used to seat groups of four. Others can be split apart for use for tables of two diners. If we have groups of four diners coming in to eat then we reserve the tables that we can't separate. I hope that makes sense to you. Even if it did look strange - there was method in our apparent madness!

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the salmon. We are certainly not "trying to be a bistro" - we just aim to serve good quality, locally sourced meats, fish, and seafood to our hotel guests and dining customers. Of course we could buy cheaper from wholesale warehouses but we sincerely believe that the local produce we have here is worth that bit extra for the quality and to support our wonderful local suppliers who work so hard to produce world class quality products. As for "shop style puddings" (!!) well, apart from one item on our dessert menu EVERY SINGLE dessert is handmade in our kitchen and we try to make them a little different to the usual choices you find. The one exception to this is the chocolate and cherry brownie which is made for us by our Artisan bakers on the Isle of Skye who use a specially sourced gluten free flour which enables us to be able to offer a gluten free option to our customers.

Thank you for your lovely review. I expect you have seen quite a few changes since your last visit in 2007 and it is great to hear that we are hitting the mark for you. I really think it so important that the beds are comfortable when you stay away from home and we certainly did not stint when we came to replace the beds after we took over the hotel. As for the food, our philosophy is to use the wonderful local produce wherever possible and to cook it simply to retain the flavours. It isn't fast food - it isn't fine dining - but most of our customers and guests seem to enjoy the good old home-cooked ethos we have here.

We hope it won't be so long before you return again.
