“Great place for a relaxing break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

We spent a week here and had a realy great time. Our accomodation was a studio apartment which was spotlessly clean, spacious and well equiped.

The pool area was well maintained. The resort which is made up of lots of 1&2 storey buildings well spread out comprising small villa's and apartments is predeominetly used by portugese, a lot of the accomadation is prively owned.

Reception staff were very helpful and had lots of usful info - bus times, maps of area, etc etc.

We walked into Tavira one morning along the cycle route (unfortunately past the sewage works for some of the way), which was not as well signposted as it should have been and took us slightly longer than it should becuase of a cuple of detours!

Cabanas it self is a quiet resort with some good restaurants and bars, but not a place for a folks looking for an exciting night life.

Lovely hotel complex, mostly 1 or 2 story building set amongst beautiful, spacious grounds.Lots of lovely trees, flowers and green spaces.Rooms very clean and frequent maid service.Hotel staff helpful.Hotel is quiet with no late night noise. Its just a pleasant short walk into Cabanas which is a very pretty resort with a long broad-walk along the estuary front.Lots of restaurants and cafes to choose from.It is quite a walk to the free boat over to the beach but we never had to wait.Beach is excellent, vast and hardly anyone on it.There isn't much for young children or teenagers. It was very quiet an peaceful but that's what we like.

I stayed in Pedras da Rainha about 8 or 9 years ago and loved it but I was slightly nervous booking it for holidays this year as that length of time can change everything but it was still as lovely as I remembered it.

We were travelling with a 6 month old and requested ground floor accommodation which we got - it was one of the apartments at the front of the complex overlooking the pool. It was perfect for a baby as everything was on the flat & we could easily get the buggy in and out and also had no worries about steps while carrying him. They provided a beautifully made up travel cot. I had thought that maybe the bedroom would be very noisy as it was facing on to the road and there were parking spaces outside but it wasn't at all. Nor was the pool an issue, either noise wise or privacy wise when sitting on the terrace. Both might be an issue in the very busy months though, I'm not sure.

The apartment was spotless with loads of towels, blankets etc. The kitchen was very well equipped with lots of pots and pans, delph, cutlery etc. We didn't spend any time at the pool but it was quiet at this time of year, as you would expect...also cold!! We didn't eat there either, but the coffee at the poolside cafe was good. The staff were extremely helpful, allowing us to check out late so we had facility to make bottles etc. right up until we left for the airport. IT was also very comfortable and the mattresses seemed to be really decent quality and not the lumpy, thin things you can sometimes get!

The complex is really well laid out. Some of the properties look better maintained than others but overall the impression is very good. The flowers around the place are really spectacular. I know the pool probably gets very busy in high season but I would imagine that the complex never feels very crowded, even when very busy as it is very well laid out and there are lots of open spaces.

We would definitely go back! I would also recommend Cabanas in general for people looking for a quiet holiday.

We found PDR excellent value, the layout of the complex was good for us. We were in a little 1 bed villa (27A). It was adjoined by 2 other similar villas.

There was a feeling of space about this area of the complex, it was a 3 to 5 minute walk to the reception/pool/restaurant area. We would consider PDR as a good 3 star.

There plenty of places to eat within a short walk down to the front, 2 provided free wifi which is always handy. No restaurant stood out more than any other, they were all good value, some had very reasonable wine at very reasonable cost.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the little villas, they are more or less on their own (in groups of 3 but staggered s...

I have spent the last 2 summers here with my family. We booked it after a recommendation from a friend who has been here half a dozen times and loved it - definitely good enough for us!
This is a sprawling property with beautiful private villas. Its like a whole little village iitself. The villas have their own surrounding garden and are private and peaceful. Many are privately owned, and are rented by the owner or rented by the hotel. Everyone minds their own business and the whole atmosphere is civilised and homely. There's a lovely pool, shops and mini mart on site and then the bigger shops and restaurants are just outside the gates.
The town of Cabanas is small but full of all you need.
The beach takes getting used to, but has its own novelty factor too! The hotel provides a little train service that runs continuously up and down to the promenade. A bumpy ride but fun for the kids. You then board a little speedboat over the 200m or so to the beach. The beach is lovely, but has little or no shelter out of the sun. The loungers are expensive too. Given the trek to get to the beach, its probably worth bearing in mind that you can't just nip back too easily! Something to bear in mind if you have young children too.
This area is not for lively young-makers holiday. The bars are quaint and traditional rather than touristy. The restaurants serve excellent food though and lovers of seafood - you're in for a treat here!
The hotel organised bike rentals for us and i would highly recommend it as the neighbouring towns are beautiful. Lovely lush scenery for such a hot country!
The local town of Tavira is absolutely lovely. We went many times and i would recommend you get the speedboat over at least once as its a stunning trip. The town has dozens of shops, restaurants and sights to see. The outdoor music in the square is great. The little ones will enjoy the novelty train that runs around the whole town - approx 30 mins. Its a great way to see the town!

Room Tip: The sprawling 'village' layout is daunting, but ask for a villa close to the front of the co...

Very laid-back, quite old-fashioned holiday village. Accommodation basic but clean, lovely outside are in the two-bed villas including fantastic roof terrace. Wouldn't like to be near pool, usually fairly poor entertainment on until 11/12ish at night. Location good, stroll or land train down to ferry to beach. Staff mostly friendly and helpful. Breakfast was poor, next time would save money and get breakfast ingredients from well-stocked on-site supermarket. Beds a bit on the hard side and small singles only.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Pedras da Rainha this September for one week. It was our first holiday away together and it was exactly what we were hoping for. A quiet relaxed break in a nice sunny location. There isn't a lot going on in Cabanas, so if you're looking to go and party every night this isn't the place for you. The hotel has a great sized pool, lovely for a morning swim, you can actually do some lengths and not feel quite so guilty about the vast amount of Ice Creams being consumed. The hotel staff were all very friendly and we did go to the hotel buffet BBQ one evening our stay which was very impressive for the price 15 euros for delicious grilled meat and fish fresh from the area, with lovely salads and vegetables and a jug of sangria. The other nights we tried a different restaurant each evening and I highly recommend eating as much seafood as you can whilst staying here and really make the most of staying in a fishing village. The village itself is nothing modern or swanky, on initial viewing it could be said a little village facelift wouldn't go amiss, it still has its charm though and we had great friendly service in every place. There are a few restaurants/bars trying to get in on the 'english' tourist thing (e.g.fry up brekkie) but I think this never going to be completely unavoidable. Traditional portuguese food is the main thing here, great fish, chicken, pork, we also tried a traditional Cataplana dish and some mega Prawn kebabs. We found a lovely cafe with an instore bakery (right opposite Pedras boat dock to the beach) that did fantastic portuguese cakes & pastries. Highly recommended.

Our garden view room was great, a lovely balcony view of the gardens and the pool in the distance. It was cleaned regularly and served its purpose. We don't go on holiday to sit in the room all day long. It was lovely having breakfast on the balcony each morning.

The free boat to the beach was handy by staying with this hotel, other holiday-goers would have to pay several euros for this each day, but when its free it doesn't really matter, the beach is very clean, there's no activities happening or watersports, but for a lovely sandy beach with beautiful crystal blue waters to play in it this is a wonderful beach. Others have complained about the beach being too far away, but its clearly stated that a boat has to be taken to the beach, and for me it added a bit of extra adventure.

There are many daytrips in the area that you can go on. Tavira is well worth getting the bus to for the day, its a lovely town and you can spend a few hours walking round its cobbled streets and checking out the shops and cafes. It cost about 8euros for the both of our returns. Not bad at all. Other trips such as the Catamaran day out round the caves looked great, but you need a car to be able to go on these.

If you are looking for a holiday where you can have a week of swimming, relaxing, eating delicious food then this really is perfect for that. I have many other destinations to tick off my travel list, but would definitely come back here again a few years down the line. I couldn't recommend it fast enough!

Room Tip: Garden view rooms I think are the best position on site. Do request a double bed however, we had to...
