“A good holiday, but no daycare as advertised”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2008

We will go back to Severn Lodge, but mind you: if you go there with a toddler, you won't be able to leave him alone at the daycare. The girl working there just can't do the job. She called us back to pick up our son after 15 minutes.

Other than that, all the ingredients are there for a great Muskoka holiday. If you were cottaging at Muskoka before, you will know that sometimes the sewer backs up, so you will not complain on that.

More details about our holiday at Severn Lodge, in my blog post here:

This is our third year returning to Severn Lodge. The kids love the activities, food and staff. The adults have a chance to relax. The food is excellent, with lots of fruit and veggies for the kids and many choices for all. Rooms are simple and well maintained. A beautiful location. It is the easiest and most relaxing holiday we could think of and we fully intend to return next year!

Just got back from a 3 night stay at Severn Lodge. This is our third time at the facility. This time we had our two young sons with us. The room was clean and freshly renovated, great view, great fishing, boating, swimming.
We had a little trouble with the TV the first night, all channels were locked and the person with the password had the night off. My wife thinks I'm over-reacting, but I was pretty frustrated after speaking with a half-dozen different staff members without any help. Was swapped with another TV day 2 with no other issues.
A big reason we chose Severn again was the child care provided. There is a supervised toddler room where we thought we'd be able to leave our boys for a few hours and maybe catch up on some sleep. Unfortunately the child supervisor was more interested in beach volleyball than in watching our boys and was unable to take care of them for longer than about 15 minutes. Pretty disappointing. We ended up leaving a night early and we were not even asked why, or how we enjoyed our stay, pretty apathetic staff this year.
We will try someplace else next year.

My husband, son (11 years old) and I had a wonderful family vacation at Severn Lodge last summer on a 5-night stay. We have been telling families and friends about the amazing time we had at the resort for months after. I asked my son if he can only choose one between Disney World and Severn Lodge for vacation next year, what would he choose, he said that was difficult but then said he would choose Severn Lodge. That may sound hard to believe, but I am not surprised at all, as we truly had a fun filled vacation, a beautiful vacation.

The following are a few highlights of our vacation, or what worked for us.

1. The beautiful setting. The resort is located on a sheltered bay with beautiful islands. Almost all accommodations have a view of the lake. It had me the moment I walked into our room, the lake and the island was the only view that mattered – so peaceful, so scenic - I couldn’t help but feel relaxed.
2. The food and the service. The food was exceptional. I enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner, varieties of meals. My son always had a choice whether to eat from kids buffet or order from the menu at the dinnertime. The staff was very pleasant.
3. The water sports. Everyone in our family loves boating, we did a lot of it at the Severn Lodge. What we enjoyed the most are sailing, kayaking and canoeing, which are all included in the package. The motorboats and Seadoos are available for rent, although we are not motorboat enthusiasts.
4. The evening entertainment. The evening entertainments are definitely family oriented, a lot of audience engagement, most nights we were just laughing non-stop. My son got my husband in ‘trouble’ a couple of nights, resulted in my husband having to ‘perform’ on the stage. I haven’t seen my husband ‘let it go’ so much in years.
5. Other activities we enjoyed including hiking and horseback riding (off the resort 15 minutes drive). My son enjoyed fishing, sea wasping and tried water ski, which offered by the kids program. There were also the wild bird show, the bon fire and swimming…

If the above sounds fun to you, then the resort is for you. I call it a beautiful Canadian summer vacation. If you are thinking about Water Park and Ferris wheel or spa and sophisticated evening entertainment, you are looking at wrong place. Hope this is a helpful read for you.

For all the people complaining on this website, you need to realize that obviously a single family run resort in the middle of the woods is not going to be the 5 star place of your dreams. I have been going to Severn Lodge for 9 years in a row and every single year gets better. The staff is always great and the food is top notch. Sure it might not be the place of your dreams if you are a 50 year old couple looking for a getaway, but for families with kids and teens, its a great place to spend a few days or a whole week. The rooms aren't great hotel style but they are adequate and who needs that much tv on vacation? The in house movies are fine and that's all you really need, you don't need all those fancy cable channels on vacation. The grounds are clean and the water is nice. The pool is clean, the boats are nice, and the entertainment does get a little old but it's always fun to go to. The feel of the whole lodge is relaxing and the view just adds to it. If you get the opportunity to go to Severn Lodge, go because it is definitely worth it.

We went with a large group, each couple in its own room. The rooms were okay, but worn down and in need of some TLC. Our front porch was unusable due to sewer smells wafting during our entire stay. Nobody actually fixed or addressed this problem, although we brought it up to front desk staff.

My wife and I have no kids, and if we weren't with a group of others who did, we'd probably have been overwhelmed by the way the Lodge is set up for children and their parents. The website is misleading, as are pamphlets and other promo material, as they show loving romantic couples all over the place. In reality, it's a place full of kids aged 1 through 10, and their harried parents. Which is fine, but should be better reflected in the advertising. Lots of kid activities, lots of opportunities for parents to leave kids with staff, it seems.

We did find there was a lack of communication on activities. We had to pursue information at the front desk, where it was doled out sparingly. Example: the boat tour on a vintage Muskoka boat wasn't promoted, and so was cancelled due to a lack of interest.

Food was exceptional - a great menu and specials to look forward to each night. Good wine list. Dining hours at breakfast and lunch were a little limited, but choices and quality of food made up for the narrow window in which to eat it. Our servers were attentive when they were available (they were overwhelmed!). I reject the claim in another review that they were incomprehensible. An aussie accent or a french accent, doesn't matter. Just have to listen. The dining hall WAS inordinately noisy, though!

Overall, it was a good place to be, in a beautful setting -- just not so idyllic as one might like for the price.

All of the servers in the dining room are unable to speak English at a level that we can understand. We had to clear our dishes to the end of the table and had to ask three different servers for a drink. The dining room manager however is a delightful Aussie named Aaron. Aaron did his best to make our dining experiences better, and i feel sorry for him that he didn't get to hire his own staff because I would say that 90% of them were incompetent. The view of the lake is amazing but the grounds are dirty and unkept. the grass is dead and there was garbage bags left on the road by our room for over 5 hours!!! The bar tender Lacey was another highlight of our stay. She was very fun and energetic and made the stay a little bit more tolerable. Whomever was running waterfront was another story. Seemed like he would rather chase butterflies than help us out at the dock. The zebra mussels were terrible, and he did nothing to remove them. I understand that the Severn Lodge has changed hands in the last Six months, but where ever the last owner went he or she should come back to it before this person who owns it now runs it into the ground in a hurry. The food was great as usual, and looks amazing we left the dining room with a full stomach and not a single bad thing to say about the food. Whether or not I'll stay again?!
I'LL HAVE TO CHECK WITH MY DAD
