“Just want to go back.......”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2014

I cannot claim to be well traveled , but have done enough to recognise something out of the ordinary.

Dhole's Den is extraordinary. Starting from the location, to the way it has been built --- the balconies give you the impression you are right in the forest .... the bay windows, the environment friendly set up, the rooms and the bathroom, their sheer neatness and roomy feel!!!

However all of this mean nothing in itself. Dhole's den has the right people running it. I chose the place simply on the strength of the reviews in Tripadvisor and now I am adding my own.

The new manager Rajesh does a splendid job. Everyone (Mahendar and the others ) is trying to make sure you have a great time. What they lack in urban communication skills is more than made up in their eagerness to ensure that you and your family is having a good time.

Initially i considered it expensive, but now i would say they are pretty large hearted for what they offer at that price. To sit in the balcony and listen to the night...unbelievable!!

I have never stayed at place where the staff line up to bid you goodbye...it happened!! Unfortunately we did not see too many wild animals, but met with some good people.

Room Tip: the rooms are good in themselves. If it is just one family, no point going for the bunglows.

First of all, Bandipur is not your run of the mill destination. It is wonderful in its unspoiled aspects and proximity to wildlife and birds. Secondly Dholes Den is very unusual: modern, well designed and pleasing, top flight fittings in the bathrooms, excellent staff and SMALL which makes the experience personal and lovely. The meals were good, the hospitality more than excellent. We want for a lovely morning mini trekk finding fresh leopard prints and spotting unusual birds, My stay there was too, too short. Would definitely return and recommend the place for westerners too. The beds are India styled... Firm, large, which suits my comfort needs just fine. The two separate mini bungalows and the rooms in the main building are airy and fresh.
There are beAutiful native hounds in residence...friendly, well cared for, and under good control. But if you have a fear of tall dogs this may not be for you even though the dogs do not bound around disturbing guests. The owners split their time between Bandipur and Germany and bring the sensibilities of both cultures to their endeavor at Dholes Den.

Room Tip: I loved being in the main building house but the bungalows are also quite appealing The main house...

You must be thinking how can there be a 'HOME' in the Wild.....you need to be @ Dhole's Den. A perfect blend of comfort & luxury with the stark reality of Nature's ways is what I would describe my stay there. People are fantastic and make you feel really wanted. Locale is terrific...you must sit out in the verandah / patio late at night to 'Hear Nature'. Will definitely go back for a longer stay....

Dear Sir,

we are so happy that you felt so homely at Dhole's Den and call it Home in Wilderness. This actually is what we had dreamt of when we started this Safari homestay in the jungle.

Let me also congratulate you that you are one of the few who has actually made use of the balcony in ist right way: Listening to the sounds of the night. and the jungle.

We hope you will grace our place soon agaon.
Best Wishes

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013 via mobile

I stayed for one night only in one of the rooms that are separate from the main complex(unsure what they are called). I'm going to split my review into sections.
Rooms: Well furnished, excellent views of the stunning Blue Mountains, the Nilgiris. Very airy even though there is no AC. The beds are a bit hard and difficult to sleep on. The verandas offer an immersion into the outside surroundings : the cool wind, the chirping insects, and the scrub vegetation that surrounds. However, they are not very clean and I found many fungus like substances littered around.
Food: Barely passable, but understandable in a small hotel in a remote location. Suffice to say that it does not taste good and it leaves much to be desired.
Service: Amazing! Sukanta, the GM and his boys are helpful and efficient. Sumantran himself is a very interesting person. He is great to have on a safari or bird watching expedition and regales you with stories of his own pursuits of tigers, elephants and the rest of the animal kingdom. He brings his tales to life and is enthralling.
Activities: I did not use the jeeps provided by the hotel but instead made my own arrangements. I do not know the quality of these tours. The only activity is the safaris in Bandipur, of course, and I have no complaints about this because this is the reason for visiting.
Price: All in all, a bit pricey for the services being offered.

Overall Judgement: Stay there, if simply to talk to Sukanta.

Dear Sir,

many thanks for your detailed review and we are glad you like the Service at Dhole's Den and enjoyed the views and surroundings and the walk with Sukanta our Manager and Naturalist.

We are sorry to note that you found a fungus like substance on the verandah. Well to clarify, we have just removed certain climbers from the railings which looked very good from far but had a problem. They left a residue on our tiles. It will take a Little time so the tiles are freed of that residue. To add to it as you very well know we use Minimum lighting and bats find that really inviting to leave their droppings on the walls and at times the verandah. We are fighting it and are hopeful to find a solution without harming the bats.

Ist unfortunate the Food didn not suit your palate. We strive hard and will surely make sure your next visit will be laced with a tasty meal.
Look Forward to welcoming you in the not so distant future.
Best Wishes

I keep going back to this place because of the palce itself and Sukanta!!
this time I chose not to go for Safari and spend time with Sakanta.... going for an early morning bird watching trip.... walking around in the farm. This place has something really different then most of the other places I have stayed. My Wife and Daughter love this place.
The villas are wonderfully done, service is top class and food is amazing!!
They have also started work on the tented accomodation.
This is a home away from home.

Dear Sir,

We thank you very much for your review and the praise they contain. We are so glad that it is your third visit and you felt it s refreshing as always. To comment on your line of not going to a Safari. Well there is more to Bandipur than a Safari. We are happy that you enjoyed the bird watching trip with Sukanta. And to add I missed Meeting you this time...
See you soon

Great property, awesome food (especially "Golmes" desserts). Also, the service standards were out of the world. The manager (Sukanta Das) & his staff made me feel so much at home that i extended my stay at the Den for 2 more days! A must stay place if one is travelling to this part of the paradise. Thanks to Sukanta's inputs, i got to see couple of rarely visited tourist places in and around Bandipur. This was possible due to his excellent knowledge of the Bandipur topography. This "delightful" experience has made me decide to visit the Den once again soon! For me, Dhole's Den is my permanent getaway from the urban jungle called Bangalore!
