My husband and I have just returned from a week in Kefalonia. We stayed in the Hotel Irinna in Svoronata, the next village from the airport. This was a late deal so we were not sure what to expect. The hotel was listed with the tour op as a two star so we knew it would be quite basic.
The fact of the matter is that we had the most fantastic week ever. HIRE A CAR.... there is so much to see and so many amazing beaches.
The hotel is quite basic. No wifi..... we had no TV, the shower was simple, the furniture tired.... but it was a perfect gettaway. The room was clean, the beds comfy, the air con lovely, the view amazing. Breakfast was included and was nice. No big fry ups for us brits, but toast, bread, honey, jams, ham, eggs, coffee and juice.... very continental and enough to keep you going till lunch.
The tavernas around the hotel were all nice, but we loved Fois and Calma... both near the hotel and both great food and great atmosphere.
The village is a sleepy one, with a harbour and a few beaches. If you want to get away from it all and have the most relaxing time.....go there. Don't be put off by the planes... we were out and about most of the time and didn't notice.
My tips of places to go.... Up from the village is Kourkoumelata... there is a cafe there that looks over the bay. Have a glass of wine there, the views are to die for and the locals sit and chat and watch the world go by.
If you go to Fiscado... try and find a beach called Dafnoudi just after the village of Anti pasta.... it's such an experience walking down the valley, but when you get there... it's takes your breath away.
I am already planning to return next year. Who needs the 4 stars with the high rise and entertainment programme. If you want to step back in time and relax.... go to Irinna.
