“Excellent choice on the border”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

This was my second stay here in the past 12 months -- visiting locally for a sailplane event in St. Bernard de Lacolle. Hotel is very clean, rooms modern, staff friendly. Included cont breakfast is just fine. I have never dined at the restaurant for lunch or dinner, but several friends have and all have been disappointed. So, come for the nice little hotel with pool, have a decent breakfast and get caffeinated to your level of choosing and then go on with your day in Quebec. I'll certainly choose this hotel again when I'm in the area.

We lucked into booking at the Best Western in St. Bernard de Lacolle, Quebec. We are U.S. citizens who were traveling by car from Western New York State to Northwest Vermont in the region north of Burlington. It made sense to look for hotels on the day we traveled in the Adirondack region, anywhere from Albany through Lake George to Plattsburgh. But everything was sold out -- it was the height of the season -- or lacked the features we wanted.

So we sought a property just over the Canadian border, and the Best Western at St. Bernard de Lacolle fit the bill exactly. Attractive, locally owned (the owner was on site at breakfast time), locally managed, bilingual, and with all the luxury touches a moderately priced hotel the traveler should expect of a moderately priced hotel. The bed? Very comfortable.

It's just a mile north of the border crossing from I-87 (the Adirondack Northway) at Champlain, N.Y., into Autoroute 15 at St. Bernard de Lacolle. First exit off Autoroute 15, and situated right in the southeast quadrant of the exit.

The only glitch is easily avoided if you read on: The property has two buildings. The northern and smaller building bears the large "Best Western" brand sign. This northern building has a covered porte cochere for automobiles and a reception desk, but the desk is not staffed. The main building is the much larger southern building, which has "RECEPTION/OFFICE" signs that are not visible until you're already arrived at the building. It's a bit confusing for the traveler coming north from the hub-bub of the border crossing. Better signage would help northbound travelers find the main reception/office area immediately without confusion.

Breakfast was diversified and served in a large dining room that even includes an outdoor balcony. All in all, this property is highly recommended and worth the hassle of a border crossing for travelers who had intended to stay on the U.S. side.

Staff great, hotel room great, atmosphere great, clean, modern and the pool was warm.

As for the food, TERRIBLE. The continental breakfast was decent, but how do you screw up a waffle that you make yourself? As for the dinner meal, it was very pedestrian. The restaurant is beautiful and the atmosphere is amazing, however the food did not fit the room. The food was simple, flavorless and cold. My wife and kids were done their meal before I received my meal. The food tasted like it was pre-made, frozen and then cooked in the microwave. Apparently they have a chef. If this is true, he/she is the worst chef in Canada and has no passion for food.

Reception and restaurant is in the gray building. Most of the hotel rooms are in separate building. One cup coffee maker was a good treat. Breakfast was included and served in the restaurant.

We stayed here before heading over the border into the United States. Our room was clean and quiet (except for when the AC kicked in), dinner was terrific, and it was followed up by a fantastic breakfast! Breakfast was served and it included toast, cheese, a boiled egg, some fresh fruit and 3 delicious oatmeal raisin cookies! It was plenty for breakfast and a midmorning snack! If I had to make note of a complaint it would be that the TV volume was preset too low, and when the AC kicked in you couldn't hear anything.

We decided to stay right over the Canadian border the night before heading into Montreal. What a great find. We had to go next door to the hotel to get our key. The lady at the desk was so welcoming. She said we have been waiting for you. The pool was actually open. Check in was so quick. Our room was clean and large. The next morning we went next door for our continental breakfast. Wow, we were served scramble eggs, toast, cheese, fruit and coffee free with our room. That alone was worth it. Wendy at the front desk was terrific. We exchanged American money for Canadian money for only a 4.00 service charge. I thought it was quite worth it and I received a coupon for 5.00 off the duty free store on the other side of the highway. We used that on our way home to buy candy for the ride home. Please do not hesitate to stay here. So happy I found this on trip advisor.
