“needed to stay somewhere in Taumarunui”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2011

For this place to be rated number 1 on trip advisor in Taumarunui says alot about how bad the other places must be!

We needed a place to stay after a long drive, and asked at the ISITE for a recommendation for accommodation with a pool for the children. This is the only accommodation in Taumarunui that has a pool - word of advise dont bother!! The pool obviously hadn't been cleaned in ages and had leaves and other dubious objects floating it in. The hotel has a tennis court but when we went to try and get rackets to play we were told that they provide balls but not rackets!

The restaurant was closed for dinner and breakfast as the owners had decided to give all the staff 2 days off. The front desk staff member was a little sketchy on how to get internet access and had to wait for the owner to return to confirm how to get on to the internet, although to give them their due once he returned he explained that there was no charge as long as we were just reading emails and not downloading movies or music etc.

The area around the rooms were in a terrible state, with paint tins, buckets, old furniture, broken toys & bikes etc just stacked up.

The rooms themselves were clean and tidy, with a double bed, sofa, table and chairs and a kitchen area in the main room and 2 twin beds in the bedroom.

We were a little nervous staying here as when we came to shut the back window we found a man wondering along outside the window, he ran off when he saw us.

The laundry was open until late which was good and was approx $2 for a wash and $3 for drying.

There was no where open in town to eat except a converted train carriage, which when we entered we could hear the staff talking but after waiting a couple of minutes nobody appeared so we left again, or Macdonalds - which to be quite honest is probably your safest bet, its only been open for about a month and is obviously the eating place of choice for the town. Staff there are super friendly.

All in all not really impressed with the accommodation and wouldn't really recommend it

was the answer the locals gave when I told of our experience at Cental Park Moter Inn.
I like Taumarunui - I find it is a lively town with lots to offer the visitor. A pity this Motor Inn lets the town down.
We had booked weeks before , but on arrival the staff had trouble finding our booking & then changed our room - so we were accommodated in the middle of a very noisy bunch of golfing visitors. We were told it would cost us twice to be moved to a quieter room.
Management would not take responsibility for the noisy behaviour of the golfers.
Cheap rate, cheap uncomfortable accommodation grubby & unkempt - oh & the advertised restaurant was closed for the night - without warning.
Would not recommend to my worst enemy!!.

The local i-Site Information Centre suggested this motel as I requested one with a spa ... had been riding a motorbike all day!!
When I checked in, a man behind the counter in shorts & socks, (no shoes) and very rough looking ... didn't seem to know what he was doing. Then just asked re a supply of milk "Real or plain milk" ....that was all!! No other conversation.
The room .... for $145nz I expected a higher standard.
The bed had no support - not a quality bed. Only 2 very soft flat pillows provided - no others in cupboard. The tv remote was broken, the wall behind the desk had coffee spilt down it.
The town does have a great Thai restaurant in the main street though ... well worth eating there.
