“Good food, reasonable prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2011

"Reasonable prices", of course, is all relative - 23% VAT in Greece and the none-too-clever exchange rate between £ and € makes food and drink quite expensive in Greece just now.

That said, I liked this little restaurant. It has character, and easily overcomes the disadvantage of its location just off the main street at the southern end of Nidri (about 200 metres north from Athos Hotel and more or less opposite a tobacco kiosk and small supermarket. Clever use of pastel paint shades, an enormous grape vine, a few wild flowers on the table in a glass of water and some truly eccentric fish sculptures give it an unlikely charm.

The food was very good; mushrooms in garlic sauce is an excellent starter, as is the tzatziki (to be honest, I'd have preferred a little more garlic in it and a slightly less creamy texture, but it's a very minor niggle); the option of toast and garlic butter instead of bread with the meal is also welcome. (Strangely, I have no trouble with vampires after eating in Greece :-) ). The meatballs with fresh herbs in a Metaxa sauce were amongst the best I've had anywhere, and chicken had on another occasion was very nice - tender and moist with no gristle or bone. As for wine, try the "retsina from the barrel" - cheap and delicious and served in a well-used anodised aluminium jug - just as it should be!

The staff were pleasant and helpful. Like many restaurants / tavernas, this one appears to be family-run. I recommend it.

The only negative wasn't the restaurant's fault - on our last visit, in the late afternoon before pickup for the journey home, a mouthy Brit endlessly lecturing his wife / girlfriend / whatever on why she shouldn't drink the tap water in Greece because she'd get very, very ill and he didn't want that for her. Oh, and mind the salad, and the drinks, because of tap water in ice and used to wash the salad.... where on earth did he think he was? Botswana?

“Fantastic food,lovely ambience”

Great Greek and International food - meat quality particularly good - Pork Snitzel the best I've ever tasted. Lovely at night with candles lit and fresh flowers on table.
