“A special place”

Curlew Cottage is absolutely wonderful. It is beautifully furnished and extremely well equipped. Everything is of the highest quality. There is lots of space for six people, but it was very cosy for just two of us. I really cannot fault the cottage and have no hesitation in recommending it highly. Excellent value for money.

“Home away from home”

Accommodation was everything that the website said, very comfortable and clean and beautifully decorated. Fantastic location for walking the coastal paths and handy for the pub. The cooker took a bit of getting used to but was fine once we figured it out, the log burner was very cosy as the weather was a bit chilly at the begining of May. Looking forward to booking again next year.

“A lovely week away from it all!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012 for a stay in March 2012

We returned last Saturday from a great week at Curlew Cottage, and would love to have stayed much longer! Located in the sleepy small village of Dunstan, Curlew Cottage really does offer a luxurious place to stay if you want to get away from it all. Fifteen minutes stroll from the lovely wee fishing village of Craster, we really enjoyed all the public footpaths nearby which allowed us to explore on foot and hardly use the car all week. This is also a great area for cycling with lots of quiet country roads and plenty of pretty villages and country pubs to visit. Both the Cottage Inn in Dunstan, near the cottage, and the Jolly Fisherman in Craster serve local beers and good food ( we didn't eat in the Jolly Fisherman but will definitely go back in the future as the menu in the evening looked great ). The Ship Inn in Low Newton by the Sea is also a favourite haunt of ours, especially during the week when it's quieter as it is very, very popular at weekends. The beaches nearby are beautiful, perfect for kids ( big and small! ) and dogs alike.

The photos of the cottage say it all really, and the decor was both beautiful and recently finished, with lots of little personal touches that really made this place stand out. The kids bedroom is so sweet. and my Mum really enjoyed feeling like a queen in her beautiful attic room. The well equipped kitchen hadn't seen a lot of cooking but had everything we needed, and the log fire in the living room was really easy to set and lovely to sit in front of in the evening. We were only sad that it was a little too chilly to enjoy the outside BBQ area which would be great to soak up the sun in during the summer.

If there was one downside to the cottage is would be the complete lack of mobile signal, and no access to wifi or internet. I didn't mind this, but if you had anyone to keep in touch with at home it could be a bit difficult. The owners Anne and George are considering installing a phone in the near future which would help, particularly for folk staying for more than a week. Having said this some mobile providers signal is better than others, and you can get free wifi at the Cottage Inn just next door. Food shopping in the area is a bit sparse, but there's a great wee Spar in the village of Longhoughten about three miles away, or a slightly longer six mile drive ( or cycle! ) to Alnwick which has everything you'd need for the week. None of this is a real downside if you're looking for peace and quiet!

Anne and George were really helpful, and were on hand with anything we needed. We would really recomend Curlew Cottage, which is certainly worth the money, and one of the prettiest retreats we've seen in this lovely area of England. Finally, Craster kippers are a must for breakfast!
