“Nice stop through Grootfontein”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

Fiume Lodge was the perfect stop on our way up to the Caprivi. Jorn and his team of lovely ladies made us feel at home, and were very accommodating of our two girls. The food was very good -- great home made bread. The room was very clean and comfortable. Our only regret is that we didn't have more time to take a trip with Jorn to visit the Bushman -- he is so knowledgeable about their culture and speaks their language, amazing. Next time! We highly recommend Fiume Lodge for anyone looking for a stay in the Grootfontein area.

We were en route to Etosha. Stopping for lunch was planned in advance. Us 4 were the only customers for lunch. WOW. And what lunch. Out of this world. I cannot speak for lodging, but for food I can. We ate a salad composed of mushrooms picked at the base of termitaries ( a delicacy), eggplants sandwiched between local cheese, a KOUDOU pie and a freshly homemade chocolate cake. We cannot find a better meal elsewhere. Simply delicious. One of the best, if not the best meal during our 10 days stay in Namibia. Over and above this, the kindness of the owners was remarkable. Go for a stay. but moreover go there for a lunch. Not to be forgotten.

The accommodations are very nice, a series of buildings built around a grass garden with a swimming pool. Thatched roofs cover very clean and comfortable rooms in a quite surrounding. Breakfast and dinner, which are outstanding, are served in a dining facility adjacent to the lodges bar equipped with a pool table.

Fiume lodge is a former hunting camp in the middle of a game reserve. A watering hole provides opportunity to view wildlife but that's not the reason for staying here. If you are in this area of Namibia then you have or will visit Etosha. You absolutely must make the half day or full day trip to the San Bushman living museum. In addition to being a fabulous host Joern speaks the local San Bushman dialect. As a white person who group up among the Bushman kids, he has much more insight into the Bushman than any other guide you will find. I was initially hesitant about the "living museum" concept but after being there a few minutes any reservations quickly disappeared. The Bushman are clearly proud of their heritage and happy to share their lives. After spending a month in Namibia, from Fish River Canyon to the Caprivi strip, I can honestly say our time at Fiume and with the Bushman was our second best experience, second only to Etosha. Highly recommended.

When we arrived we received a very warm welcome from Joern the lovely owner of the lodge.
The lodge has a nice garden, a pool and a waterhole. The previous owner was Portuguese so the dining area and the rooms are what I would call in (African) hacienda style. The rooms have air condition for cooling and heating. A blessing during the Namibian winter!
The homemade food was excellent and plenty and one of the best we had in Namibia (far far better then in the Heinitzburg restaurant).

We had booked a full day excursion to visit the SAN bushmen in a “Living Culture Village” (it costs approx. 105 Euros p.p.). Joern speaks the SAN language fluently, because he grew up with San people on his parent´s farm. It was terrific to have cheerful Joern as our tour guide. With him as translator you get to know so much more about the San, because not all of them speak English fluently. The day with the San was a marvelous experience for us (family with eleven year old daughter).
The three of us spent the whole day with a group of San and Joern. There weren´t any other tourists, so we felt really special.

The San are incredible nice and interesting people and we were deeply impressed by their kindness and knowledge how to survive in the bush.
They showed us how they hunt, where they find water, which plants are useful as medicine, showed us traditional dances, etc. Their language with its clicking and smacking sounds is just lovely.

Thank you again for the terrific experience!

We will definitely return to Fiume Lodge!!!!
