“Surf and Chill”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2014

The main reason behind travelling to Nusa Lembongan was for me to surf and for my partner to relax and unwind. The set up in Lembongan is amazing, 3 quality waves right in front of you, make your pick, surf for a few hours then relax. There are more waves in the area but that info is not for here. When we arrived in Sanur we were greeted by a hotel representative who took care of our bags and our tickets for the fast boat across the bay. Rocky's fast boat was fast and super easy, just get in and relax. Once in Lembongan another representative from Batu Karang greeted us and took care of everything. A short walk and we were in heaven. Our thatched roof one bedroom villa was immaculate, our view was to die for and the outdoor shower/bath was something different that we both relished. Everyday day felt like a new day, the breakfast at the restaurant was tasty and varied, each pool was either empty or 1 couple in as the resort is nice and stretched out. Some days in the middle pool, my partner and I would be the only people there, we would eat, drink, relax and basically had the place to ourselves. My partner used the spa nearly everyday and she could not speak more highly of it. Dinner at Muntigs are amazing, try everything but most importantly try the Indonesian Banquet, make sure you give notice to the staff and make sure you are hungry! One of the best assets Batu Karang has is their staff. Take the time to talk to everyone, learn some basic Balinese, try out some bad Bahasa and you will be corrected with the Balinese version and a laugh and a smile. As we were at Batu Karang for 7 nights we got to interact with the staff regulary, I can not thank those guys enough, we made friends, were tought Balinese, told about secret spots, given a new perspective on Lembongan life and most of all we were made to feel apart of the community. Pro tip = relax and smile and take it all in, Lembongan and its people are beautiful, there is no need to bring problems from home over here. We booked Batu Karang purely from peoples reviews on Trip Advisor. I proposed to my partner at Batu Karang as the vibe was right and the place is breathtaking. So if you want to surf and chill and still get out and adventure, STAY HERE!

This is such a magical place! Batu Karang is on a small island and you get the best of both worlds: the five star treatment and the local life experience, because it's a small island, the locals are close by and integrated into the surroundings. The boat ride to the island is only about half an hour. The resort is luxurious yet very relaxed and in sync with nature, its a hard balance to attain and Batu Karang does it perfectly. We loved our room with our little garden and private pool full of white perfumed flowers floating in the water, we trully felt in paradise! The service is exceptional and the staff is so friendly and helpful! The island is full of activities like snorkeling, surfing, kayak, motorcycle rides, and it also connects to neighboring islands through the tiniest most picturesque bridge. The views from the resort are breathtaking, you can even see Bali's volcano! The resort's restaurant is TOP NOTCH! We had several restaurant recommendations to eat elsewhere in the island but we just kept coming back to eat by the pool with its sea views because the food was just irresistible. All in all our experience couldn't have been better! We really hope to be back soon! We HIGHLY recommend it!!

The boat ride from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan was only 30 mins and a bit bumpy. Recommend going over in a fast boat unless you have a strong stomach. Batu Kerang is a beautiful resort the staff are lovely and the accommodation is perfect. Unfortunately Nusa Lembongan is sadly neglected by the people who live there. Rubbish is piled up everywhere and the erosion on the beach is devastating. All the villas are built into the side of the hill so be prepared to do a lot of walking.

My review is lengthy as I didn’t find the other reviews of Batu Karang on TA overly helpful so hopefully this is of some assistance to readers. My husband and I stayed 4 nights in mid June in a superior one bedroom villa. I thoroughly researched where to stay and chose Batu Karang as it looked to be the best resort on the island (other than having a private villa which we didn’t want). A week or two before we went I had second thoughts and considered cancelling our booking as I was concerned it all looked too ‘wooden and rustic’ in the pictures and we aren’t fans of that style. We decided to keep the booking as it was only 4 nights. We were sooo pleased we didn’t cancel as Batu Karang is so fabulous and we can’t wait to return!! The photos online just don’t do it justice. It is so much nicer in reality.

We had Villa 17 which was a superior one bedroom villa up towards the top of the property and higher up the hill. I was concerned when I saw our villa was up the top of the hill after reading other reviews on TA but it was really a non-issue and the view was even better the higher up you go. I had intended to walk up the hill each time for a bit of exercise, but every single time we were about to head up the hill there was always a friendly staff member that suddenly appeared at just the right time to offer us a ride up in the golf buggy. It wasn’t actually as steep as I was expecting anyway. Walking down is fine as there is a path and stairs down the side of the property.

Regarding the villas, the difference between the regular villa and the superior villa is that the superior villas are higher up the hill so have better views. 2 superior villas are located right next to the middle pool (which is next to the lap pool also) which we found to be extremely convenient and the 3rd superior villa has its own plunge pool. The regular villas go from just below the two top pools down to the bottom pool where reception and the restaurant and the Deck bar are located so the view wouldn’t be as good.

This is a small resort but all resorts on Lembongan are smaller than compared to say Bali. However, it certainly didn’t lack any facilities for its smaller size. It has a restaurant, bar, gym (I think?), day spa, cinema (!), departure lounge, pool bar, among other things. Our villa was right next to the middle pool and most days we had it to ourselves or there was just one other couple also using it. Perfect! It was still quiet in our room despite being right next to the pool, which had chill out music playing. The only noise that disturbed me was about 1am one night when a few people who I’d say had had a few drinks were jumping into the pool for a while.

A few other reviews mentioned the rooms are quite light. It is true that with the curtains and blinds closed the room is not completely blacked out and a few birds woke me up early so sleeping in was a little difficult but not to the extent that it was a deal breaker. My husband was able to sleep through it all. I found the lighting to be poor at night but I don’t have great vision. Air conditioning worked fine, the unit was a tad noisy but it didn’t keep me awake. There was a momentary power black out at one stage but a few seconds later a generator kicked in and it was all back up and running again in no time.

The staff here are so lovely. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them and they were all very genuine. The level of service was excellent and the level was just right – when on holiday I don’t like really full on, over the top service where you feel you just want to be left alone and scream “if I want something I’ll ask for it!”, but it wasn’t of a low standard either. One thing I really appreciated was that staff were willing to recommend and to make reservations for you at other restaurants on the island and the resort information book in your room even contains information about other bars and restaurants. That was a nice change compared to Bali where the resort we stayed at would come to your table and spruik their evening seafood buffet while you were eating your breakfast. Batu Karang staff booked our restaurants, organised the complimentary transport each restaurant has to get you to and from your accommodation and they even requested the best tables at restaurants for us (thanks Minty!). Allan the owner is present on site and happy to have a chat.

Breakfast was ordered off a menu of perhaps 15 or so different items. You could order as many items as you wanted. The range was quite varied and the quality was very good. The view while having breakfast was over the beach and water and was lovely.

The location of Batu Karang was good. There are a range of different areas you can stay on lembongan and all no doubt have their benefits. It is fairly easy to get around particularly if you hire a scooter (there isn’t much vehicle traffic so it’s pretty safe) so we were pleased with where we were located. It's a 1 minute walk from where the ferries arrive from Sanur and overlooks the beach and water. Sunset occurs over the water which is visible from the resort and has an unobstructed view, unlike other locations on the island where the sun drops behind hills and coastal points.

We had one massage at the day spa the day after we arrived which was very good but made the mistake of not booking in all our treatments earlier and they were booked out when we tried to make other appointments as it seems people that aren’t guests also visit the day spa so we couldn't get another appointment for the rest of our stay.

The prices at Batu Karang were reasonable. They aren’t street prices but they aren’t Aussie prices either. You could find cheaper food and drink prices out in the streets but the quality and service would be lesser.

We had a fantastic holiday staying at Batu Karang and would return again. I highly recommend it and don’t think there is a better resort on the island.

Room Tip: All rooms have views, superior villas have a better view

We took the Rocky Fast Boat from Sunar to Lembongan. Upon getting off the boat we were greeted by the lovely Pandi. The took our bags while Pandi gave us a quick tour of the resort. The resort is outstanding and is located in a fantastic location, the lap pool was my fav along with the spa.

Take note when investigating accommodation that most other resorts are too far from the Main Street which is great if you really do want complete peace and quite but for us we still wanted to be part of it. The daily breakfast is great, we looked forward to it everyday. We nearly ate all meals at the hotel the food was fantastic.

On our final night they really outdid themselves making us this amazing floral bath it was unreal and we really appreciated it.

I don't have a bad word to say about Batu Karang and would highly recommend anyone to stay there.

Room Tip: We stayed in villa 7 it was great!

Stayed here for 3 nights 16 to 19 May...I felt like we had stepped into a dream,Batu Karang exceeded my expectations,We had room 17 which has the best view The owner Alan was in residence at the time working on some new additions around the place, he was very friendly and welcoming, and always stopped for a chat to make sure we were happy.
The staff are so lovely and genuine, the food is amazing both Breakfast which was included and was ordered of a menu freshly prepared, and Dinner was great too we did leave for half a day and explore this beautiful little island but as we were here to really unwind we spent a lot of time lazing by the pools ...choice of 3! laying in our beautiful room soaking up the views, and treating our selves to an afternoon in the day spa which was simply heaven, from the time we met the rep at Sanur to the time we left we felt like royalty...I hope we can return to this slice of paradise one day soon, heartfelt thanks to the team at BK for making our trip one we will never forget and special thanks to the staff ferrying us up the hill in the golden golf carts.

I cant say enough great things about this hotel! My husband and i stayed here when we were getting married on the island in March this year.

The hotel and its staff catered to us, our families and friends who were staying there like kings and queens. Nothing was too much for them and no ask was to great. We held a large drinks and canapes function a couple of nights before the wedding and everything just ran perfectly.

The rooms, the views, pools and landscaping is all modern, well designed and taken care of.
We had some elderly and disabled guests that were treated with the best care, especially when it came to getting up and down to their rooms, the spa and the pools. If anyone has been to Lembongan you would know the steps can seem endless sometimes. The fact that Batu Karang provide a buggy service really helped, with these guests especially!

The management staff, front desk, landscapers, servers, room cleaners and down at 'the deck' always have a smile on their face and are genuinely happy to see you. How they remember every ones first name when theres more than 50 guests in your party ill never know! :)

Thank you again to everyone at the Batu Karang, we cant wait to come back and stay with you guys again soon!!
