“Could do better for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

These bungalows are located at the eastern end on Mushroom Beach about 7 metres above the beach with superb views over the beach and across to Bali. The hotel provides free transfers from your hotel to Sanur to catch the boat. The boat trip is $100 Aus return for two people.
You are met upon your arrival by a lovely welcoming and friendly young man by the name of Wayan who will carry your bags along the beach to the hotel.
We originally booked a standard room with air conditioning but were upgraded to the honeymoon suite. This is a huge room with double bed, canopy and mosquito net. It has very high ceilings and a large verandah. There is a huge bathroom with full sized bath, toilet, indoor and outdoor shower (shower pressure is pretty poor but there is hot water which some of the other units do not have)
The room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. You DO NOT get a refrigerator, coffee/tea making facilities, so need to buy any drinks you want to consume in your room however there is no way to keep them cold.
The standard room is similar to the above description but about half the size.
There are also a variety of other room types some of them being thatched roofed bungalows on stilts with quite steep stairs to access the upper sleeping areas. Some of the rooms do not have air conditioning or hot water but they are a lot cheaper
Breakfast is not included in the price but there is a lovely restaurant set up high overlooking the bay – magic setting and very peaceful (no hawkers ). Restaurant prices for food and drinks are very reasonable.
There are two pools, one on the upper level and one on a lover level both overlooking the bay. The steps down to the lower level are fairly steep and treacherous. There is also a lower level down near the beach that has sunbeds with shaded trees. The beach in front of the complex is rocky and not suitable for swimming however there is a nice sandy area just a short walk west of the property.
There is free wifi, massages and motor bike hire available at the same prices charged by vendors outside the property.
There is a general store type shop just down a lane near the front of the premises together with restaurants etc
All the staff were super friendly and welcoming.
We hired a scooter and was looking forward to a ride around the island. What we found was a dry and unappealing bush land because of drought conditions. The roads were appalling being essentially single lane, rutted, pot holed, goat tracks which made riding a bike both dangerous and unenjoyable particularly when you met a truck coming in the opposite direction – had to essentially pull of the road. We went across the bridge to the adjacent island but the roads were so bad we only went a short way. The Indonesian government has sadly neglected the infrastructure on this Island. Roadside verges were strewn with rubbish making the whole area unappealing.
Power outages were a regular occurrence and the rooms got pretty hot witithout the air con. If you are going to stay on the island take a torch particularly if you like reading (unless you have a kindle)
I have marked the sleep quality down due to the abundance of roosters living nearby who seemed unaware that they are supposed to crow at day break NOT all night!!!!!!
I enjoyed staying at Mushroom Beach however a lot of the other beaches did not have much going for them – most of them are seaweed farms with no swimming areas.
The surf beach seemed to have some pretty dangerous reefs and were named accordingly.
All in all I enjoyed staying at the property but felt for the upper priced rooms ($85-$100 Aus) that a frig and tea/coffee making facilities would be in order (Breakfast did not start until 7.30am so for early risers who like the caffeine fix you have to wait)

I agree with the previous reviewer who likened the place to Fawlty Towers.
We stayed here for 4 nights in July, and while it wasn't horrible, it could have been better.
They didn't have the room we had booked in advance, and so we had to move twice, to accommodate people whose reservations they for some reason did decide to honour even though they came in the days after us. When switching rooms they insisted we be out of our room by 10am and were there to clean it right on the dot, even though they then said the people in the room we were moving to were allowed to stay till noon. We had to badger them to get the other people out early as well (fair's fair) so we could move in and get on with our day. Then the lock on our door broke and they tried to say that it was our fault, and then they tried to use a hammer as a screwdriver to fix it and had to replace it with a lock from another room. We wasted far too much time moving and waiting for them to do things for us.
If they tell you they are fogging for mosquitoes, clear out (like to the other side of the bay) for at least an hour, not just to the pool as they suggested. The cloud of toxins covered the entire resort and then made its way down the cliff to the beach below.
The location is nice, up on the cliff, and dining while watching the sunset was nice, but I'd give one of the other places like Mola Mola House a try if I went back there.

Speaking of Mola Mola House, the dive shop beside it was great, Pro Dive. Wayan was a great divemaster, and took us snorkelling at Manta Point because there was only one diver that day, and it was cheaper and faster than going with one of the little outrigger boats.

Although we did not stay at this resort, we came across when looking for somewhere to have dinner whilst watching the sunset. Although the food wasn't anything special, the staff were not intrusive even though we were sat there a while. And the view of the sunset was spectacular!!

This is simply a shame because the first impression when you enter in the place is really great.

The bungalows and the garden seem to be very traditional and nice and luxurious.

The people seem also to be friendly.

BUT, when you start to look closer and experiment it... It's then another story.

Let me list few points :

- very small triple bedroom (matress on the floor for the extra bed, no mosquito net.
- dirty external bathroom with evacuation of the sink directly below on the floor and the feet
- broken shower with ONLY COLD WATER when there is water.... Considering how much they charge, it's a rip off.
- smelly and dirty toilets
- unsecured rooms, no locks on windows, kids use windows as doors for fun
- the 2 swimming pools are truly a bacterial culture nest, i did not have courage enough to dive in. One customer has done it, the day after he was ill...
- let's go around the pool now, few lounge chairs were broken, no sunbed matress for some, and rotten matress for others, as well as broken umbrellas.
globally very dirty surroundings with cigarettes on the floor, the plants pots, and so on.
- the restaurant now, very slow service and obviously kitchen too far away from customers, every morning the fried eggs were cold when served as the tea.
- tables were never cleaned from one service to another, yurk!
- no butter but kind of smelly yak butter margarine.
- finally, behind nice smile you are just treated as a big wallet.
they charge 80.000rp for a day rental scooter when anyone else on the island is charging 50 to 60.000rp.
- a 2 hours renting boat to go snorkeling is charged 600.000rp but when you see the boat it should be 250 to 350.000rp.
- they even try to charge is for the hot tea pot i was asking because i refuse to drink cold one part of the package price for breakfeast. finally they did not after discussion.
- they also did not charge us for a hot stone massage as we ended up with serious blisters on the body.

finally and as a conclusion, this place would be ok, just ok, as it is, if only the price was divided by 2 or 3.

to summarize our bill for 5 people, 4 nigths, 2 dinners, few cocktails (less than 10), 2 massages, 2hours boat, and 3 days rental scooter (1), was a bit less than 9.000.000 !!!!!

but if no other choice, the situation remains great and mushroom bay is also a very good place to snorkle (not necessary to rent a boat)

if after this reading you are still motivated to stay there, please get in touch with Wayan. very nice and helpful guy.
thx to him anyway.

Do not stay at this resort. Dirty rooms, itchy when in the bed sheets, dirty and leaking bathroom full of mold. Staff seems very nice (they probably all) but everything is a scam

We booked a ROOM and booked through booking.com. Upon arrival they take us to a HUT, toilet and bathroom outside. This was NOT what we booked. So back to the reception and they checked it again. So ok, maybe this was a mistake. We could take a room, but only for two nights because the third night it would not be available. We had to take the honeymoon suite for the third night for an additional 300k. We confronted him with the fact that we booked and now he doesn't have availability so it was not fair that we had to pay for changing rooms, so he lowered it to 200k. Fine. We took it.

Get to the room: mold in the bathroom, toilet didn't flush well, itchy in the sheets, mosquito net with holes, dark, smallest bed ever. Not fit for my tall Dutch man and me. Didn't sleep all night. Next day, toilet starts leaking. Went to reception, they send someone to look. He said its probably for down somewhere (??). I said I didn't care, but I'm not staying in such a room. Ok, go to honeymoon suite that same night. But it was more expensive they said. How do they dare to ask for additional fees if they are not keeping their bungalows in good status. I refused to pay extra and they agreed.

Get to the honeymoon suite. It's bigger but who cares? Same itchy sheets. Shower is outside and toilet has no window so liards come in at night. Ok, I'm not a big reptile and bug fan so I care about those things, others might not. But Mosquitos get in too. Two additional bad nights in mushroom bay and so glad we left.

We paid 600k per night!!! This is quite a lot in Asia. Ok, it's high season but the rooms are terrible. The pool is dirty and so are the beds. The restaurant food was not that bad but dirty as well.

DO NOT STAY HERE, SPEND SOME MORE AND GO TO A NICE CLEAN HOTEL. Also mushroom beach is nothing special. Lembongan island as a whole is not. Prettier places to be found in bali, I have experienced. Not worth the boat trip or other hassles.

We stayed here for 6 nights and really got a chance to relax.
Mushroom Bay had 4 beach front resorts when we went and 2 more under construction. This one is at the end of the Bay which means the beach, restaurant, spa and resort it's self has much less foot traffic than the other places.
The Balinese huts were of giant bamboo and coconut wood construction- beautiful and well built. The doors were a bit sticky to get closed and locked. A/C or fan, mildly comfortable mattresses and pretty awesome outdoor bathrooms. All the rooms looked well taken care of.
Our kids stayed in one hut and we had our own. Heaven! But each hut is off the ground, kids need to know how to climb a ladder to get in and out and down to the toilet in the dark. Our kids were fine and loved the independence of having 'their own house'. There is a frog pond, doves everywhere, a crow in the morning and we found kittens.
The kids were always entertained and the staff were happy to play with them and involve them in laying offerings, lighting incense and sprinkling water at shrines and entrances everyday.
The asian food was delicious, but the western food was lacking, which shouldn't be surprising to anyone on an island hideaway. The spa was fun and cheap- massages for the whole family everyday.
The pool might be salt water... but it was over dosed while we were there and we couldn't stay in for very long at a time. The loungers are a lot worse for wear and need replacing, but that didn't stop us from lounging all day and watching the sunset with big bintangs in hand.
The front entrance has some steps up from the beach and the restaurant is built hanging over a cliff/stone wall over the ocean when the tide is in. When the tide was really high the beach was inaccessible from the front entrance. The back entrance seems dodgy the first time you walk it. But you get used to it. It leads to a few corner stores and a cross roads of restaurants and guesthouses that are off the beach and then down to resorts and beach front restaurants. Thre is a new pool being built, looks like it will be beautiful. Is tucked out of the way on a lower cliff from the restaurant. wasn't obstructive to the vacation.
The whole place was quite and relaxed. Our kids really had the run of the place.
And as you would expect, bring your own shampoo and beach towels.

I am surprised at so many poor reviews. This place was great. The staff were so helpful and went out of their way to help us. The oceanside and beachside location is amazing. The food at the restaurant was okay. We stayed in 2 different bungalows during our 6 day stay. Both were in good condition and had great outdoor bathrooms. The only downside is no hot water, but this was not a problem as the days are so hot and the water is cool rather than cold. Really quite a good place for the money, good value. I would definitely go back.
