We took the high-speed train (fyra) from Amsterdam to Brussels, stayed a night and got on the Eurostar to London.
Firstly - if anyone else is doing same and coming from Amsterdam... the stop is NOT Central, but the one after (Gare Midi).
We got off too early and when we showed up at the Ibis off Grand Palace, we were advised we had gotten off at the wrong station and found the wrong Ibis.
..Well, at least the service here was friendly and helpful. This was not the case at Ibis Gare Midi...
After getting a cab, we found our way to this one at Gare Midi. The truth is, I think the Eurostar is the only reason to be staying here because it is close enough for you to wheel your luggage across .
The service at reception was brusque, bordering on rude ... and not very helpful.
Intending to walk to the main tourist area, on walking out of the hotel we felt a little unsafe even in the day, as if we were walking through the poorer parts of town.
After an afternoon out, we had no coins with which to buy a train ticket back in the evening and there were no train staff available after dark ... and found the brussels train system difficult to navigate or buy tickets (so always have coins!) ... and with people loitering round the stations, it was a bit unnerving.
Nevertheless, we got back to Gare Midi eventually and to the hotel ... it wasn't really late (8pm?), but it was the only hotel I stayed at on this trip that the main doors were already locked and you had to use your keycard to unlock.
That they have this for security is good, but it does tend to say something about the neighborhood. In the evening there were also people loitering around outside the hotel ... and from inside peering out, it was as if we existed in different worlds.
We finished the evening at the bar... and the staff were somewhere between harried and unattentive. In the end, refusing to having my bill signed to the room because I had already pre-paid for my room ... I had to pay cash (in the hotel bar even as a guest?!).
The rooms themselves were ok ... clean and reasonably new and appointed for a hotel of this class.
If I were ever to come through Brussels again, I think I will trade some convenience to the Eurostar for better service and peace of mind.
Stay at the Grand Palace Ibis if you can!

Thank you for your feedback, we treat all comments with the utmost seriousness and will be investigating the matter with the staff friendliness accordingly.
Regarding security outside and inside the hotel, I can assure you that we strive to make our hotel a safe place. We are equipped with surveillance cameras and a night guard is also present to check in hotel passages and procedures relating to safety. For what happens outside the hotel, I also assure you that we have already made numerous representations to the city of Brussels in an attempt to improve the situation. It is true that we are located in the train station area but Brussels is really working on the regeneration of this neighborhood.
We appreciate your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future.
