“In deep memory of the nazi victims.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012

A place one can not avoid going! In memory of all the people arrested, tortured and deported under the nazi-regime. Not only by the germans themselves but also by a large number of flemish collaborators who jumped into the nazi system by segregation towards the belgian nation and their so-called brotherhood with the germans. Many of them are to be considered worse monsters than the nazis! A landmark to be found similarly in other european countries occupied by the germans, but here in belgium with a very special accent while neo-nazis and extreme rightwing parties are picking up again with succes in this so venurable flemish-speaking part of belgium.

“Very moving, be prepared for an emotional few hours”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2012

This place will bring home the horrors of a concentration camp - even on a relatively warm day it is cold and damp and miserable. Much of it seems to be intact, so it is possible to try and imagine the terror and desperation of the inmates at the hands of the Nazis. The excellent audio guide spells it all out, the cruelty meted out is hard to comprehend. Only small complaint is that the new audio guides don't 'sync' with the screens, but there is so much information this does not detract from the overall visit. Don't bring young children. There is a lovely looking restaurant next door who were happy to serve us a much needed coffee after the tour.

“Must see for the war history minded”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2012

After a visit to the concentration camp of Theresienstadt near Prague, that we found was not very authentic/ interesting we decided to visit a Nazi political prisoners camp of war in our own neighbourhood.
Approx. 35 km from Antwerp you can find such a camp that is now a memorial to all the victims who were hold prison here of which many died here.
Very good restorations with respect to the original interiors and surroundings. Very good walking tour with audio guide in many languages.
All aspects of the (transit) camp will be explained will visiting this memorial.
Beware, this is not for fun but well worth a visit trying to imagine the horrible suffering of the victims. This should be a must see for school classes !
Visit is as well on the inside as on the outside, a walk arround the complete fortress of approx. 1 km
Duration of visit : 2, max 3 hours, free parking space on entrance
as well as restaurant.
