“What a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2010

During the summer of 2009, we stayed at the Barn House in Tree Elle Retreat for a couple of nights and had a great time. We decided to go back last month and stayed at the Barn House for 6 nights this time. Tree Elle did not disappoint and our stay this time was every bit as enjoyable as the previous time.

The Barn House is well appointed, comfortable & homely. It has room for 8 guests and was perfect for our families (6 adults and 2 children). Both the house and the garden have been well maintained and very clean. The open plan kitchen/dining/lounge area was ideal for family interaction. Our families had lots of fun here, including playing games & preparing meals with fresh produce (vegies, fruits, herbs etc) from the garden right at our door step.

It was nice to see the immaculately landscaped garden dotted with autumn colours this time, quite different to the summer foliage we saw last year. There were several vegetable patches in the landscaped garden, all cleverly screened by low hedging.

The included breakfast provision was generous and featured fresh eggs (from the in-house chooks), cereal selection, fruits, tea/coffee etc. There was a bread maker and pre-mix bread flour was provided. We loved the freshly baked bread (not to mention its aroma!) every morning for breakfast. Elle was a gracious host and there was no problem requesting additional provisions which we did on a number of occasions.

The children loved roving the spacious & interestingly garden as well as visiting the animals that were kept in compounds at the edge of the garden. Elle was great with the children. She was more than happy to show and talk to them about the various animals in the property.

Tree Elle Retreat is well located in a peaceful & relaxing environment. It was so nice to wake up in the morning to the sound of various birds, including the kookaburras. The Barn House is well furnished for a comfortable & enjoyable stay. We have stayed in other places in the area that were cheaper but they were not of the same quality & standard. We had a great time at Tree Elle and hope to be back again.

We recently stayed here in the Winter season and dispite the weather had a fantastic time, I cannot stress enough how lovely the two storey modern houses are, beautifully furnished and very homely. It is more expensive than a lot of accomodation in the area however it is of a very high standard. Our 3 year old loved feeding the sheep in the morning that came to our back door and were quite vociferous until placated with bread or fruit! Elle was a wonderful host and took our daughter to feed the animals and collect the eggs and veggies with her. I would thoroughly recommend for a short stay

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2009

We stayed at Tree Elle for 5 nights in April 2009. We rented the 4 bedroom barn house which is nicely decorated and roomy. One would expect a little more luxury for the highly priced rent. The barn house is in a meadow in which supposedly animals roam freely. We did not see any animals except the farm animals kept in the caged area. The owner is overzealous and immediately upon our arrival gave our children a lecture which door to use and to wash their feet before they entering the house. We also needed to clean the house before leaving and the promised home cooked breakfast meant that the ingredients were provided but that we had to bake our own bread. We were provided with 20 eggs and 1 liter of milk to last for the week...
We believe that there are other properties in Denmark / Walpole that provide better value. The area itself is nice and quiet.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2009

Our family group which consisted of my husband, 2 daughters (age 13 and 5) my parents and my aunt and uncle stayed at Tree Elle for a little break in January 2009. Tree Elle is in Bow Bridge, between Denmark and Walpole. I'd booked the "Barnhouse" which has 4 bed rooms on the property website. We arrived and as we walked into the house, there was lovely music playing, the aroma of baking bread, beautiful sunshine through the open glass doors and view of the most gorgeous garden outside and Irwin Inlet beyond. What a welcome! As we wondered around the lovely garden, we found Elle who managed the property together with her sister Trina (Hence the name) who showed us around and asked us to help ourselves to the vegetables and herbs in the garden to complement our meals- there were many types of lettuces, beetroot, zucchini, spring onions, basil. parsley, coriander, string beans, sugar peas, tomatoes, rhubarb, silverbeet.....the list goes on. The garden's absolutely magnificent! There is a Coffee Co op in a little enclosed garden area where one can get freshly ground coffee from a machine for $3, tea is free. There are biscuits which you can purchase. Honour system operates here, ie put money in envelope provided.

Now to the house. The living areas are so spacious, and beautifully furnished, the kitchen is huge and better equip than most homes! Besides the usual (stove/oven/microwave) there's a mixer, bread maker, blender, bamix, coffee plunger and lots, and I mean lots of crockery, baking tins, glassware. This is the most well equip kitchen in a holiday home I'd ever seen! The pantry had cereal, muesli, bread mix, flours, salt, sugar, custard powder, vegemite, condiments, spices fresh eggs in the fridge etc etc.

After checking out the kitchen, we went back out to the garden working out what we could cook and "harvesting" as we went along. My 13 year old daughter was so inspired by the garden that she planned and prepared a 3 course dinner for the family using mainly the ingredients she could get from the garden! Apart from that, there was a croquet set which got some use although the boys had to dodge the sprinkers while playing! There were also numerous board games available, a library of books for one to browse through, even cook books!

Our 5 year old had a good time cuddling guinea pigs and chasing chooks around. We had such a lovely time we would have been quite happy not venturing out had we stayed longer. The main wineries area of Denmark are 20 minutes drive eastward and Tree Top walk 10 minutes drive westward. The Nornalup Teahouse Restarant is 5 minutes away and do reasonable meals, has a kids menu and an impressive wine list. The markup is modest even on their museum wines.

A great place for a family (or couples) to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, to chill and relax, enjoy the view of gthe garden and inlet, and have the kids occupying themselves safely running around outside in the garden. Or cook up a storm!
