“Adventure outside the city of Brantome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

We went to this wonderful place on a day trip from my in-laws place further to the south. One star in the Guide rouge was the reason for going and we where not dissapointed. The food was interesting and had aspects of innovation, the "soupe de framboise de bois" that we had for dessert was really amazing and we have used that reciept several times for family dinners back home, and, handed it on to several professionals active in different parts of the world. The place is a bit tricky to find but once you are there you just want to stay.

Nearby city of Brantome is also worth a visit, both for food and "ambiance".

We lunched here a while ago with some friends who were staying in our gites, a charming American couple. Bob was here to select wine for his wine club in Philadelphia and likes to see good wine lists so we thought we would visit the Roc as we had eaten there previously. The set lunch was delicious sitting on the terrace, the wine included with meal a perfect match to the food and to top it all off we had a visit to their cave. Can't comment on the rooms but I would be surprised if they are not the same quality as the resto. Great place and the set lunch great value for money.

Stayed here for one night on the way back from the south of France. Had a very well appointed room with a balcony overlooking the river - great for breakfast in the morning. We arrived after lunch but asked for a snack and were given a delicious salad on the terrasse next to the river. The grounds are lovely - the river is relaxing, clear and full of trout and otters. Across the bridge is a tennis court and swimming pool in a meadow setting. We had dinner in the restaurant and can confidently say it was the best meal and wine we have had for a long while. The staff were superb throughout. I can thoroughly recommend this hotel and restaurant as a stop-over or base for a longer break. We will be coming back!

This family owned and run hotel and restaurant is set in a magnificent setting with the river running through the garden.
Our first visit was many years ago when the present owner and chef's mother was the chef. She was considered to be the best female chef in France. We have been back many times and always the standard is perfection.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are tastefully decorated and the linen and towels are top class.Hermes is the choice off bathroom toiletries.
The restaurant warrants Michelin starring as the chef was trained by his mother and the first class cellar established by his father remains.Flowers fill every room giving a warm and elegant ambience.
This delightful young couple have continued to run one of the best establishments we have ever found in France over many years.

Spent a most memorable evening on the terrace over looking the Dronne river excellent food, wine with friendly attentive service it was the best way to end the day after a long drive from the UK. I must mention the local Belgium beer from Bordeaux! really hit the spot
The restored 17th century mill is a great place to chill out next to the river and let time pass by very much like the flow of the river, however if you are more adventurous may I suggest you hire a bike and explore the nearby villages of Brantome and Bourdeilles this is can be easily arranged at reception.
Had a truly wonderful stay at this charming location.

This boutique hotel located 6km outside Brantome in the little town of Champagnac de Belair. The hotel is oozes charm and character- with its mill, riverside location and medieval decor. It also has a host of facilities including a swimming pool, reading room and big old fireplaces. The rooms are clean and reasonably large each with its own terrace. You can try the breakfast in-house in the morning but it's nothing spectacular.

The restaurant on the other hab boasts a single Michelin star. The digustation menu is fantastic and I would recommend dining by the river in the summer.

Overall a beautiful boutique hotel. Highly recommended for couples and families.

A warm and helpful welcome; an elegant and comfortable room with a balcony providing a spectacular view; the pleasant sounds of birdsong and of a rushing weir; and two delicious dinners with excellent smiling service. What more could one want?
