“Interesting Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2014

Stayed for 2 nights in December with my boyfriend, and although this was a real castle, much of the castle was blocked off for viewing. You couldn’t go around to the back (they block it off for deers), they have a dungeon but not open to the public, and there were no tours of anything in the castle. The castle/hotel has this ominous eerie feeling to it, but it added to the experience. Although our rooms were very very small, the bathroom was modern and had good water pressure/temperature. Hotel staffs were pleasant (some more so than others), although you do have to proactively ask about the history of the castle (which they printed out 4 pages for us to read). One would think that they would provide this information at the time of check in.
The beds were average; however the pillow firmness was horrible. The pillow had no firmness at all.
The heater also took a while to kick in, but when it did it was like an oven in our room. Maybe it was this or something else that awoke me the second night of my stay. I woke up to weird feeling that someone was in the room or near our room. It was only the next day that i was informed that there may be a ghost in the castle. I didn't see anything, but i usually can sense when there is another presence around.
Once you arrive back to your hotel, there is pretty nowhere else you can go around the area. AS it was usually too dark to venture out again, we ate our dinners at the hotel restaurant which was decent. we had a usual table next to bear and the driving santa clause (you have to be there to know what i mean) which was much nicer than the dining room area. It was nice to have a beer/wine in front of the fireplace in the lobby as well.
breakfast is included and consisted of the typical european fair (bread, hard boiled egg, cheese, and ham)
overall it was a cool experience to have stayed in a castle and if you are around the area, I definitely recommend at least a one night stay there.

What more can be said, this is a real castle. This is not an out building or annex, this is a complete structure and not a partial ruin. The service is top notch and very personable. The interior is neat and has a full chapel with stained glass. My room was a basic room. I found it to be large, warm, and very clean. It was very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent and all you could eat as well. My second night I ate at the castle and found the food to be good with large portions and surprisingly reasonably priced. They even have their own beer brewed for the castle. Being approx. 15min. from Rothenburg and 50min. from Nurmberg this is a great stay.

My wife, I and three daughters stayed there for two nights in 2004 and loved the place. It has all of the ambiance that you would want in an ancient German Castle, such as long twisting oaken and stone corridors, hidden rooms, towers and huge fireplaces. The food and service is excellent and local attractions like the town of Dinklesbuhl and Rothenberg are an outstanding visit to the medieval past. The girls are mostly grown and gone now but my wife and two friends are going back in 2014 to re-visit Colmberg and this great castle.

I highly recommend it to travelers to Germany......Also, if you do go there, check out "The Romantic Road"

Mother and I spent a wonderful stay at this enchanting, 1,000 family owned and runned castle hotel. Since she is 90, the staff made extra certain she well taken care of! Evening meal was delish, service impeccable, rooms warm and comfortable. We felt sad leaving. Great stay at great price!

My sister and I stayed here and had a wonderful time! We really enjoyed the night we spent here after spending the day in the adorable mid-evil town of Rothenberg d.o.t.
The staff was wonderful and friendly and we just LOVED our room. It was a piece of old world charm but with modern amenities without feeling like you were living in mid-evil times.

The view from our room was amazing and the sunset even more amazing to top it off.
We loved watching the live game they raise in the pastures and touring the grounds. Many picture perfect settings to capture, especially the tower and castle wall entrance.
The most enjoyable part of visit was just walking around the castle interior and of course our meal. Our dinner was superb and the food was prepared just perfect.

I highly recommend staying here to really soak up all the midevil charm that Germany has to offer!

My husband and I stayed here for one night right before Christmas on our honeymoon. It was by far my favorite hotel on our trip and I wish we stayed longer. We arrived in the evening, driving in our rental car. I saw the silhouette of a schloss in the distance, and thought, "Oh my gosh, could that be our hotel?" We kept approaching and the GPS indicated that it was! We ascended up to the castle, and it was just amazing, driving around the curves into the courtyard, surrounded by the old grey stones and Christmas lights. Our room was amazing - high, wood-beamed ceilings; clean; with a view of the courtyard and the valley below. Great bathroom. The hotel is decked out in old paintings, giant antiques, and taxidermy. It was such a wholesome Bavarian experience! We had dinner in the restaurant, which was wonderful - stone walls, wood beams. It was so much fun just to explore the castle! Breakfast was also fabulous. The Christmas decorations were wonderful, but we would love to visit during the summertime. We highly recommend this hotel - fabulous service, comfort, beauty, value - truly a magical experience!

Our family of 5 stayed here for 2 nights in the midst of a 24-day, 7-country European tour. While our travels took us to London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, and several other higher-profile locations, our family rated our stay at Burg Colmberg among the most pleasant experiences of our entire trip. Lovely and generous staff (front desk, restaurant, and cleaning staff were all delightful!), clean and spacious rooms, spectacular views, delicious and generous breakfasts ... and a wonderful dinner experience in the courtyard. We wish we could have stayed for several more days just to gaze over the meadows, watch deer, and wander the halls of this enchanted castle.

The location is a great blend of isolation and proximity ... feels like you're away from it all, but Rothenburg ob der Tauber is about a 20 minute drive away, and the charming town of Ansbach is even closer. Best of all, your hosts are extremely hospitable. Vielen Dank, Familie Unbehauen!
