“Lots of things i cant forgive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

Went to Basils last night with a table for two pre booked. Kinver is a lovely old town and from the street the restaurant looks inviting and full of character. Inside however, the decor is very dated and fairly depressing, like a day room in an old folks home. The seating is comfortable enough but tables are bare with awful cheesy condiment sets. The walls are covered with what appear to be works from local artists but these are dated and tired and frankly very uninteresting
Service was slow but just about acceptable especially as the place was so busy. The menus were a combination of specials and set meals and there is way too much choice. As soon as i see such comprehensive menus my heart sinks because there is no way such a small establishment can provide fresh options for all of these dishes so you know a lot of stuff is coming from the freezer.
Our starters were Thai fishcake and Pate. The fishcake was OK but the sauce was bizarre looking and certainly did not seem to be sweet chilli as advertised, more like a weak Salsa. The pate was a massive disappointment. A giant slab of grey smooth tasteless fat, straight from a pack of some basic industrial pate pack or similar. It was served with four tiny triangles of toast from a bog standard loaf of medium sliced bread, meaning of course that once they were eaten I was left with about ¾ of the pate to eat on its own. Why is it so hard for a restaurant to make fresh Pate and serve a moderate portion with a good quality bread?
The main course was a 16oz steak for me which i ordered rare. This was cooked to perfection and the meat itself was excellent. Everything else with it was awful. Four giant mushrooms completely soaked with cooking oil, 3 onion rings with some kind of flavourless thick batter and some large watery tomatoes again with no flavour. The final insult was a large bowl of cardboard tasting oven chips. The wife had poached salmon which was Ok and well cooked.
We skipped desert and ordered two coffees. These were bought to the table with a plastic pot of UHT cream which is completely unforgivable AND on the side of the cup was a horrible plastic packet containing some or other biscuit which belonged firmly in a travel lodge, sat in a basked next to the kettle in a low cost room. We were never asked if everything had been OK at any point during the meal or afterwards.

my fourth visit and still exceeds all expectations. Food and service second to none. Can most definitely recommend the creme brulee for dessert and the veg assortment that accompanies the main meal i fresh and tasty, superior to anything else I've experienced.

“Very enjoyable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

I went to Basil's for my birthday I have never been before but would recommend Basil's to all of my friends. The staff are really friendly and not as "robotic" as most places. By this I mean we were not rushed but treated with kindness. I visited another restaurant in kinver last month where the staff were very unprofessional! The food was excellent I had beef Wellington and my wife the salmon with vegetables, perfectly cooked. Then for desserts homemade bread and butter pudding which I thoroughly enjoyed. I will deffinately be returning to Basil's very soon an amazing restaurant and great value
