My wife and I stayed at Hotel Victoria for the first several days of our honeymoon and it was everything that we hoped for. The room was comfortable with amazing views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding mountains. The service was warm and inviting - we were treated like honored guests they were happy to have back even though it was our first time there. Different fresh fruit was in our room every day, and the only thing better than the amazing continental breakfast we enjoyed on our balcony was the incredible supplement available downstairs each morning.

The restaurant in the hotel was likewise a surprise. The fixed price menu each night was delicious, and they easily substituted for our dietary restrictions without fuss or complaint. Despite the fact that English was for many their third or fourth language, servers were all full attentive and addressed our every need, whether it was picking the perfect local wine to compliment our meal or indulging my wife's desire to sample every cheese in their wide selection.

One caveat is that the hotel is actually above the city of Montreux in Glion, so one needs a car or to take the train to get up there. There is not much to Glion itself, but it is very convenient to get down to Montreux or any of the other contiguous towns on the lake. The second is that I made my reservation simply by emailing the hotel. I only mention this as it might put off an American traveller expecting a computerized confirmation, but their reply to my email was enough.

We would absolutely go back.

As an aside, we would recommend that if you want to take the Chocolate Train day tour, make your reservations well in advance.

  • Liked — Service and food
  • Disliked — Glion is not that exciting, but ultimately not too inconvenient.

We were here a couple of times in the last few years. This fact alone tells me that we like the hotel. Nothing has changed, same as it ever was. The staff is generally very friendly, and if someone has other experience, it might be a language problem. Don't forget that this is a French speaking region. Anyhow, the weather was terrible during our stay, and exactly in such circumstances, we enjoyed the breakfast and the many lounges, and an occasional walk in the beautiful garden. The infrastructure is effectivly four star, but there are some details that really are enchanting. e.g fresh flowers everywhere, fresh fruit daily, in the lobby as well as in the room. we received an iron within 5 minutes upon request. It is also to note that even if the breakfast is officially closed at 10 am, we received a big pot of coffee at 10.30, etc. Noise: as there are functioanl rooms, there can be some immissions, e.g. cars departing after midnight. But overall, it was once again a really lovely and relaxing holiday.

  • Liked — The splendid view of Lake Geneva and the "Feeling at Home" atmosphere
  • Disliked — One waitress at breakfast who actually was the Pianiste had no clue of serving breakfast

Stayed in this lovely grand Victorian hotel for 4 nights . We booked a junior suite with 3 adults and it was enormous. Beautifully furnished in keeping with the era. Arrived in Montreux by train & then hopped on a cogwheel train up the hillside where we were still faced with a rather steep 5 minute walk to the hotel. We travelled with our mother in tow & reaching the hotel nearly killed her, she was seriously reluctant to leave the hotel to sightsee, with facing the thought of making the trek again being all too much. Obviously being perched on the hillside affords the hotel unmatched views of Lake Geneva & Montreux below.
The service we received was very indifferent with non-English speaking staff also an issue. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room so we got into the habit each afternoon of ordering a pot of tea to be delivered to the room. We thought it was a lovely touch when it arrived each time with a plate of sweet treats until we received the bill at check out and we were charged 21 CHF each time for something we hadn't even asked for. All we wanted was a cup of tea! Very disappointing when we had already paid the considerable price for a suite. Such a grand hotel deserves for its staff to offer a better experience than this.

Remarkable position -- remarkable bathrooms!

This is a19th century, old-fashioned grand hotel in a stunning position above Lake Geneva. Wonderful views from the gardens, the terrace and many of the rooms, which -- especially in the older part of the building -- are large, airy and calm.

If you are an interior design historian, the bathrooms are a must. Somebody spent a great deal of money on the latest, best-quality decor during the 1970s and it's lasted. They are truly remarkable -- public loos on ground floor have claret-coloured porcelain, with pea green wriggly tiles and gold ceilings. Our bathroom had a smaller version of the floor tiles and a suite in a mauivish pink. Everything worked beautifully and is a tribute to its manufacturers, if a little startling to 21st century eyes.

It's a Relais et Chateaux member but both food and service are a bit curate's egg -- good in parts. Waiting staff seemed to be drawn largely from students at the nearby international hotel school, who either hated it (and said so) or had slept through rather a lot of lessons. We were brought our starters two nights running before we'd even had the change to finish our aperitifs, let alone order wine. Both nights we stayed, we had a couple of really excellent courses and at least one that was seriously ordinary. They are very keen for you to take the day's set menu -- this is high quality mass catering, rather than a destination restaurant, which is a pity because the setting is unbeatable.

Gardens are lush and beautifully-kept. Pool claims to be heated but isn't and was over-run two days in a row with screaming, splashing children, whose parents appeared to think it was a private amenity reserved for them. Other guests not amused, particularly as the racket made it difficult to relax.

In fact, the lunatics had a habit of taking over the asylum. Saturday night's wedding party went on until 5am and kept the entire hotel awake -- if you weren't at the same end as the function room, you were woken by departing guests, shouting, revving cars and generally being happy and thoughtless. Apparently the night porter asked them ten times to be quiet. Perhaps they need more night porters.

We may have been unlucky and would consider returning, mainly for the position and atmosphere. But we'd book mid-week, in term-time, and check whether any functions were scheduled.

We stayed at the Victoria hotel for two nights with two small children. We had a lovely suite overlooking the lake and mountains. It was very nice with antiques and lovely bedlinen. The housekeepers were very nice but the hotel front desk staff were horrible. They treated us with contempt. If it was because we had children, I don't know. I have never had such a horrible experience in a Swiss hotel. They were not helpful when asked questions. They did not set up the extra bed for our son and we had to ask a few times even though they were sure to inform us of the extra charge upon check-in. We had dinner one night and were seated next to a very noisy large party of business people who were obviously celebrating something. We asked for a new table, there were plenty available. It took them 15 minutes to reseat us while we stood there looking uncomfortable. The meal was expensive and very average. Upon checkout the front desk was again very unhelpful and slow. The breakfast was adequate but not special. It was a very expensive stay but I felt bad about paying so much.
