Having travelled from Blackburn after 4pm in winter hours, we would advise others against travelling to the site in darkness to avoid both getting lost and having to navigate the many narrow, steep and winding roads that provide access to the property. This however forms no part of the overall review of the accomodation, many infact might even enjoy the somewhat difficult terrain - we did during daylight. All in all, access and parking was adequate, with the latter feeling very safe and secure.
Upon arrival we were met by Mr Holt who showed us to the Cowslip Cottage. We were given the basic necessary information regarding heating, hot water and electricity etc. The cottages use a £1 coin meter located in the kitchen which we found wasn't particularly hungry for our quids - with credit already on the unit. We had spent three pounds feeding the machine for the four day duration which we thought was reasonable. The box was located quite high on the wall, which for the vertically challenged among us, like my partner, may make it difficult to operate without a chair/help.
We loved the layout, design and architecture of the house. It was not overly fancy, but had everything needed to exist comfortably and to make ourselves at home. We were particularly impressed with the little touches, including freshly baked bread and cake, eggs, milk and chocolates; all there when we arrived. Other plus points included bins in all rooms, dressing gowns, hairdryer, iron/ironing-board, (although not relevant to us) childrens toys, books, a small selection of DVD's, basic cleaning items and leaflets and guides for the surrounding area.
A couple of minor negatives that we hope could be addressed for future guests or even ourselves should we return; the wi-fi connectivity was quite frankly abysmal. Having read one or two other reviews on this website the same has been mentioned. Whilst I fully appreciate that it has been checked and quality verified by an engineer, and this is no direct criticism to the Holt's - more a swipe at BT, a home hub router can only range so far and even less so with stone cottage walls inbetween. Connecting to the router could only be achieved by standing outside closer to the Holt's residence - which in many respects completley defeats the object. The Horshoe Inn, just up the road, had excellent connectivity should it be required. It wasn't a major pain for us, but the WiFi did help when trying to plan days out, routes etc.
Additionally there were a small issues with items in the kitchen. On the whole the equipment provide was extensive and of a suitable quality for a short break, however there were only two knives, one of which was the bread knife (the sharpest knife out of the two) The other was painfully blunt and pretty much useless as a cooking utensil. The other problem was with the oven, or rather the auto oven. It isn't something we had the chance to mention to Mr Holt, so this isn't a forum gripe by any means, more constructive feedback. There is no way to turn the top auto oven off when the unit itself is turned on at the wall (we checked the user manual and tried but the buttons didn't seem to respond). However it doesn't eat too much power and the rest of the cooker did the job we needed.
Finally, and this could have been user error or a timer issue, but the heating cut out on the first couple of nights and did result in 4am wake up. Take thick PJs in winter just in case.
There was plenty of storage and hanging throughout the house and nice throws on the sofa; on the whole it was cosy, clean and tidy. The location was superb for travelling around and seeing the other sites on offer in the Yorkshire community; well situated for a day out in York, quiet coutry walks or a trip to the seaside resorts of Scarborough/Whitby.
All in all, very nice! Thank you to Mr and Mrs Holt, the family and the friendly pets (except the cat, who took a disliking to me but not the Mrs). :-)

We will be wiring a wifi feed into the cottages at the earliest opportunity ( the walls are just too thick for radio waves). Sorry to depriving guests of the excuse of sneaking off to the pub for a quick pint and WiFi.
We like to think that we offer very good value for money for bookings through our web site levisham.com or posted on the internet by ourselves, however when bookings are made through an agency or other source it is possible that the additional charges/fees make it more expensive and therefore appear less value for money.
Our cottages are available from 3pm. We ask cottages to be vacated for 10am to assist with preparing them for incoming guests.
We will look into sharper utensils,, but might need to do a through risk assessment for health and safety.
Hopefully you both had a safe journey home and we look forward to welcoming you to levisham again.
