We only stayed one night at Palazzo Illica and were impressed with the large gates on arrival, the gardens, the grounds and the view of Castell'Arquato. Plus Signora Maria Enrica is a chatty warm and helpful hostess running this property that has been in her family for four generations, it was originally the residence of the opera lyricist Illica (who wrote for Giuseppe Verdi). The horses and foals were friendly and we loved the guard dog Wolf. Breakfast is adequate served in the breakfast room adorned with mirrors and other antiques. There are plans for a small gym and restaurant and we were kindly shown the massive book collection housed in a special library room. Signora Maria also gave us indications for dining options in town and we had a good meal at Trattoria al Ponte. Castell'Arquato is a lovely destination which history lovers should not miss.
