This is a « do you want the good news or the bad news » story. Firstly, the good news: the hotel is very conveniently situated – literally a few minutes from the Wilderswil train station – thus it is in a more convenient situation than the other hotels which are further up the hill (in Wilderswil Dorf – the village). Also it is situated directly in front of the Jungfrau (so one should be sure one has a room on that side of the hotel – the manageress kindly changed mine when I saw I had been given a room on the other side of the hotel). The hotel also has a large garden which is very well maintained, with chaises-longues. It has an excellent chef and the food is simple, but delicious, as he is preparing it for a relatively small number of guests. Although the 7-8 time for dinner might not be convenient for some people, it does mean it arrives on the table having just been freshly prepared. The hotel is around 113 years old, but, unfortunately not enough has been done to capitalise on this, with no discernible style at all in the furnishings, which is very confused and seems to cover all periods. Probably the only consistency is found in the newly modernised toilet/showers. The overall aspect of the interior is rather forlorn, and even rather depressing. A total re-look needs to be done of this hotel exploiting its large spaces and interesting history. As it is, a couple of nights is enough, which is a shame, as it could be made into a great hotel instead of one which has seen better times.
