“Could use some renovation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

The main feature that drew us to this hotel was the room rate, which was low for an upgraded a 5-star hotel. Other than that everything was quite average. The room was spacious but did not have an appealing feel to it (maybe just too old). Nevertheless all the facilities were just fine. The spa was good except for the weird Jacuzzi. I'd guess the best rooms are the suites sitting right on the lake, but I did not see them on the inside. Breakfast was good. All in all it was worth the room rate, but if you're looking for a proper 5 star hotel, this is not the one. Also note that it is outside the city (Lugano) and the shuttle service ends quite early (~21:30).

it is a little bit far from lugano but in a very nice place with a very peacefull atmosphere the restaurant is very expensive we did not use the spa area but it looked very impresive
the staff was friendly and helpfull if someone seeks for a relaxing holiday thats the right place.

Room Tip: take a room with lake wiew but it costs more

Attended a conference here and totally loved the scenery of Lake Lugano. Wonderful views both from my room as well as restaurant / gym area across the street. The rooms are impeccably well appointed with lots of attention to detail including the subtle arrow in the direction to Mecca.
Really solid and well executed interior design very Ritz-Carlton-ish.

A few caveats with the rooms: 1. those who had rooms facing the mountain said that they were looking at a wall. 2. My room was at the end of the corridor, which I thought was great in terms of noise avoidance, but there seemed to be a discothek or club in the building next to the guest rooms, which resulted in a constant stream of bass rumbling well above my level of tolerance.

The bar is appointed in what appear to be arts and craft from India - it is very lovely.

Being catered as a large group, our food was very decent quality and very tasty. The Nespressomachine being part of the breaks setup was way too busy.

The staff was very charming and helpful all around.

Meeting: The hotel has a meeting room that can be partitioned into I believe 3 smaller rooms.
If you have a small group of 10 - 20 maybe, the room partitions are nice and have good proportions. However, if you are in a big group and its set up as one big group, the room is too low and too long, you get a kind of tunnel feeling. It has much too low a ceiling for a ballroom, and the ceiling partitions, though nicely appointed with crown molding and chandeliers, and the marble ornamentation of the floor leave the impression of a bunch of rooms stuck on a string rather than one big ball room.

Thus: if going there for a small group retreat or quiet chill out, this is probably a very pampering and enjoyable place. But the experience is not scalable to larger groups.

Finally: the check out process is as inefficient as the Starhotel Saronno, which to this point I thought couldn't possibly be matched. Now I know - it can!

Room Tip: Lake view makes all the difference Unless you are a creature of the night, ask to be away from the...

As a seasoned traveller to Ticino, and the area of Lugano I was really looking forward to the reservation I had made for my wife and I to enjoy our 10th Wedding Anniversary.

Sadly, the case of the Swiss Diamond Hotel just goes to prove that just because a place looks good and costs a small fortune it will be good.

Essentially the problem was that for all it's lavishness, superb location and obvious class it failed to deliver the very basic essentials of customer service - which for a hotel of this reputation is a crime.

Nevertheless, let's start with the positives:

1) Quality of room furnishings, swimming pool and SPA, and the Hotel in general were first-class.

2) Location of the hotel is excellent - the stunning little town of Morcote just a walk away and Lugano about 15 minutes drive there are plenty of options to get out and explore. The Hotel's Lakefront position was good, although some may find the main road that dissects the restaurant and swimming pool area something of a nuisance.

Sadly, those were the only high points. Now for the ugly:

1) Consistently poor customer service over a period of the weekend. I appreciate that staff have off-days occasionally as we all do, but for a hotel of this class and given what you pay for this luxury it was unacceptable. One or two mistakes is OK for most people, but not the sort of issues we encountered - which I shall list as follows:

* Waiting over 1 hour for a bucket of ice.
* Having to ask 3 times to get a light bulb replaced.
* Having to go and get beers from our mini-bar, because pool service was non-existent

2) The Pool Farce

On the Saturday afternoon I was quite looking forward to a dip in what is a truly stunning pool. However, as I arrived poolside it appeared quite lively with no swimmers - infact what was taking place was a private party. I asked a member of staff if it was OK to take a swim, and he gave me a 'oh must you' look and agreed. However, rather than offering me any pool towels or even a drink, proceeded to disappear and was not seen again all afternoon. In fact, not one person attended the pool that afternoon whilst this party was going on down by the lake lawn much to the chagrin of myself and some others who had come down for a swim.

By the time anyone asked if I would like a drink, it was late afternoon and I'd already raided my room's mini bar and had resorted to removing the towels from my room - which is quite disgraceful really for a 5* Hotel.

I felt distinctly unwelcome throughout my entire time by the swimming pool, and have to ask the question why nobody told me this pool was going to be in use by a private party at the time of booking.

3) The Breakfast Farce

On Sunday morning we arrived at Breakfast hungry and looking forwards to sampling some really tasty fare. However, we were to be disappointed right from the start as we took an age to be served coffee, and given some utensils. After 15 minutes nobody appeared, so we decided to go off and get stuck into some breakfast - however as my wife was just about to literally sit back down her chair was removed from underneath her nose by an old man who I can only assume was either the owner or an older version of Manuel from Faulty Towers.

- All this time however, it should be noted that a group of boorish Russians sat right next to us were having all their needs of attended to by several members of Hotel staff.

It leaves one with the impression that he who orders 2 bottles of Vintage Dom Perignon at Breakfast is the one who has guaranteed service.....

Although my wife and I can laugh about it now, it really was no laughing matter at the time and I have to say that this is one of the few hotels in Ticino I would not recommend, or return to. Our return to Lugano a few weeks later at the lovely Villa Sassa Residence and Spa (4 star hotel, but with stunning lake views, pool, a la carte cuisine and helpful staff) sadly backed up everything we had experienced with the Swiss Diamond Hotel.

Located on the shore of lake Lugano, in the pitoresque village Morcote, about 10min from the city center of Lugano, I found a perfect hide out, away from the main stream, but with all amenities one would expect from a Swiss 5* Hotel!
Breakfast is splendid (until 10:30am)... The Panorama Suite (5th floor, lake view) has a separate living room with a dining table and balcony. - Watch out for many hotels in Swiss resorts offering separate beds as a standard! Prefer a king site bed? Call housekeeping... Boat rental at the doorstep is a plus! Drawbacks? One only: the street which needs to be crossed to get to the lake is quite busy in summer. Supervise your little ones...

A great hotel. Great service, great rooms, and great food. I will come back here again. The rooms are well designed and tasteful. The service was very good and across the board everybody was very helpful. We had lunch at the hotel and the food was very good. Of course, the breakfast was very good and the service in the breakfast areas was impeccable.

Awesome rooms. Great location. Great lakeside bar and pool with lake access for swimming and boating. No complaints at all about the facilities. Five stars for all of that. however, the breakfast was disappointing. limited choices were offered.. also the poolside food is way below par. our sandwich / fries was simply not edible. you guys should really match the food with the ambiance and location. can't be that hard ....
