“Excellent Holiday!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

We have just returned from a 1 week holiday at Smythen Farm, the owners made us feel extremely welcome from the moment we arrived. Our daughter loved the pony rides and enjoyed walking in the field seeing all the other animals, the donkeys, sheep, pigs, chickens and muffin the dog. The play room and swimming pool were both excellent and there were lots of other children for our daughter to play with, she would have been happy to spend the whole week on the farm without actually going anywhere. We stayed in the Sunalways Cottage which was very clean and well equipped. The location is also very good with lovely views of the countryside and plenty to do nearby. I would definitely recommend Smythen Farm and would like to return again for another holiday soon.

I am fortunate enough to have stayed at Smythen Farm Cottages twice this year - what a treat! From the moment you arrive, you get a real sense of being part of something special. The stunning location is a joy in itself with views of beautiful rolling British countryside nestled between you and the ocean...does it get any better than this?
Bill and Kathryn are the perfect hosts. They offer a warm welcome and set you up well for your stay. It is clear that they are there for you if you need anything but they are in no way intrusive - there is a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and this extends to the children of the family, who are delightful.
The animals on the farm are a highlight, particularly for children - it is a real joy to see them riding ponies and feeding pigs etc...there is a well-equipped playground and games room on site and, of course, the swimming pool is a real bonus.
The accommodation is hard to fault. It is modern and luxurious yet durable and family-friendly. It really does give that 'home from home' feeling and you soon feel very attached to your new surroundings. Many refurbishments have obviously taken place recently, to a very high standard. The open-plan style living areas have obviously had a lot of thought and care put into their planning and they provide a homely, social space. If travelling in larger parties or with other families, the set-up is ideal as there is good opportunity to have your own space and privacy as well as being able to socialise together.
Smythen Farm is in a beautiful part of the country and there are many local attractions aside from the lovely local beaches etc. Watermouth Castle is a must if you are travelling with children.
I cannot rate Smythen Farm Cottages highly enough. If you are lucky enough to stay here then you are in for a real treat and a thoroughly enjoyable break. Each time I have stayed, I have wished I could stay forever......

We stayed in sept 2012 & I'm reviewing ASAP to avoid rose tinted glasses syndrome.

Accommodation
We stayed in the 'meadow Sweet' apartment and it was fantastic! It has recently been redone and it's quality of the finish was great throughout the whole apartment, but the large communal 'front room' and master bedroom have had their ceilings vaulted and that has created such a light and airy social space. The cooker, fridge freezer & to be honest the whole kitchen/accommodation were spotlessly clean and well equipped. You couldn't ask for more.

The whole farm had such a relaxed atmosphere that set the tone for the holiday and with a 14month old it was great to have all the space for him to run around in like a crazy fool without having to worry about flying footballs or cars... Only one drawback (& I know I should man up but) the pool wasn't heated which in summer isn't a problem, but in sept it was a little chilly... But would you stay here for the pool?

The location
We went to enjoy a relaxing time away and you certainly get that here, but we were really most surprised with how much is going on in the local area, within 30mins drive we visited:
Watermouth castle - well kept, with so many completely different 'zones' defiantly one to go to... Gnome village gave me funny dreams :)
The Big sheep - good family fun, not worth going if your little ones not up and steady on their feet...
Coombe Martin wildlife and dinosaur park - lots of walking... Currently undergoing work, softplay for children was shocking and someone needs to tell them that ww2 is over and the signposts can go back up :)
Ilfracombe - nice harbour town but seriously don't pay the money for the aquarium it's shockingly expensive for what it is!

But this is a review about the accommodation which is outstanding and with a 14month old was brilliant, they provided a cot, stair gate and high chair which saved a load of car space...

The benchmark I always set is would I recommend it to a friend & go back myself? Yes! Without a doubt!

We visited Smythen Farm for the first time this August, staying in Forest View cottage and a fantastic holiday was had by all. The cottage was superb, clean, tastefully decorated and with everything that we could possibly need - oh and the complimentary bottle of wine went down a treat!! The family who own the cottages were lovely - really friendly and it was great that their children were more than happy to hang out and play with ours. We took our 3 children 14, 11 and 9 - they had a fantastic time - they loved the fact that swimming pool was on site, our daughter who is 9 loved the pony rides and they all really enjoyed the games room. It was great - because you felt safe enough to let the children roam about the farm without worrying where they were. The surrounding area was lovely, some great beaches, we loved Lynton and Lynmouth and had a great day cycling along the Tarka Trail for some 18 miles!!! All in all a great holiday and I am sure that we will return again soon. We enjoyed it so much we have already recommended it to our neighbours!!!

We rented Meadow Sweet Cottage for a week and had a great time. The cottage was refurbished in 2011 and is furnished to a high standard.

We stayed with our children and parents and I can honestly say everyone thought the farm cottages and facilities were great.

The pony rides were very popular with our girls and Bill the owner, explained exactly what was going to happen to our nervous children. This and the indoor pool went down really well.

Our kids are 4 & 5 and loved feeding the friendly farm animals - donkeys, sheep, pigs and chickens.

The cottages are ideally situated for Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and some quieter beaches.

The owners of the property are all very friendly and helpful and everyone works hard to ensure an enjoyable stay.

We stayed in 'Sunalways' and thought it was wonderful. It was spacious, clean and furnished to a high standard. The setting was perfect with beautiful views, peaceful and quite close to all the beaches. Our children (and dog) loved running and playing in the field with the donkeys and sheep (the dog was allowed off the lead here); the animals are happy to be stroked and follow you around. The free pony rides were a bonus and the playroom was great, a real treat. The swimming pool was fine but the owners are planning a new, bigger one which will be brilliant. We were made to feel very welcome and would definitely return.
