We stayed during summer 2011 Killarney Mountain Lodge and were underwhelmed by the accomodations AND the lodge service.
I was surprised to find our little cottage within the Lodge was really lacking, no sunlight at all, very "beat-up", and the cottage bathroom was terrible and desperately needed a remod. It was the smallest bathroom I had ever seen, my husband didn't even have room to sit down on the toilet, and our standup shower was a cheapie tin affair without enough room to bend a knee to wash your foot.
The cottage hadn't been remodelled since the 1960's. VERY beat up. And these small cottages are NOT out in the sunshine. They are connected to the inn via a dark, covered walkway, like a boardwalk - which is dark and full of cobwebs.
Through the lodge, we booked the excursion out boat out to Georgian Bay for a shore lunch.
They were calling for bad weather but the boat staff assured us it was no problem.
They took us out and we ended up in a horrible raging storm. The boat was not equipped to handle passengers in any storm as it had not cover at all. We all sat in the open boat while the storm raged all around us. We were all soaked in our clothes, frozen cold, sea-sick and had nothing on the boat to even hold on to. Being Canadians, not a single passenger uttered a word of complaint. The captain ignored the discomfort of the passengers and did not even speak to any of us for the whole trip back, and even when we docked, he did not mutter so much as a "thanks for coming out" or a smile or anything.
When we arrived back at the lodge we were shivering and soaked and dripping wet in the clothes we had left in. As we went by the front desk on the way back to our room to warm up, we asked the staff at the front desk for 2 more towels and we were told that they could not give us more towels, as there were "no more". The young person at the front desk seemed lost. We firmly insisted and she ran off into the back and returned a while later with two fresh towels which she said she "wasn't supposed to give us". I told her to mark down that she had given us the extra towels and to tell the manager to come to the cottage and see us if there was a problem! I had had it.
I had a terrible experience at the inn - the hotel staff generally was untrained. The accomodations were really bad. The only thing I can say is that the terrible experience did not extend to the dining room quality or service. Our waitress was amazing and the food was excellent.
If the rest of the hotel adopted the chef's standards there wouldn't be a problem
Don't choose a cottage.
