“Hotel was great, new restaurant had some issues...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

We stayed here so we could be close to the airport for our flight back to the states. Check in went well, and we were happy with our room. It is standard, but comfortable and makes good use of the space.
We were happy to hear that there was a restaurant in the hotel that had recently opened. Now, we understand that new restaurants often have hiccups, but this was ridiculous. There was only one other party there when we arrived and we quickly put in our drink orders. My fiancé received his right away, mine however didn't arrive for another 20 minutes after we requested it more than once. The drinks were good once we got them. When my fiancé's drink arrived, we ordered our dinner. After we ordered another couple was seated near us. We were pleasantly surprised when the food we ordered came out after just a short wait. The food was delivered to the couple next to us. We were definitely miffed as they had just arrived, so clearly the food was meant for us even if they had ordered the same thing. It was almost 20 minutes later that they brought out not our food, but the items that had been ordered by the other couple. Unfortunately it was not what we ordered, and the other couple had already scarfed down our food. Perhaps there was a language barrier as the other couple didn't speak Spanish or English, but it was disappointing. We told them to cancel our order because we were tired and didn't want to wait any longer for our food. They did make it up to us by delivering food and complimentary drinks to our room (which was not generally offered). We understand they felt bad, but it was a disappointing end to a great trip.
We did appreciate the ability to get our exit pass from the country from the hotel the next morning, and everyone was extremely apologetic. For the hotel itself, I would rate it "very good," but the overall score came down because of the restaurant. Hopefully they have figured out their issues.

Dear kikidixie,

We are so sorry that appart from having enjoyed and liked our Aloft brand, your experience at our brand new Backyard Lounge & Restaurant wasn´t as expected. We have recently opened this outlet and feedback as yours will help us constantly improve our services. Its an upgrade from other alofts around the world adapting to latin needs. I have stayed at this hotel 4x and every time, it is consistent, very customer service centric, tons of amenities, convenient, cost effective and fun (for a business hotel)! The complimentary breakfast has really improved. The hotel has a swanky feel and is more cosmopolitan than it's neighboring counterparts. The beds are great too!

Thank you for being one of our frequent customers. Aloft is a very innovative brand and we have been adapting to satisfy local and latin american needs. The breakfast was one of them and the new Backyard Lounge & Restaurant area is the other one already open for all three meals. We are glad you enjoy our concept. See you in your next trip to San Jose,

We were staying in the San Jose area to shop for a car and stock up at Walmart and PriceSmart. We had our twin 3 year old boys and two old pugs with us. This hotel was great! Most of the staff is bilingual. They let us check in a few hours early without any hassle.
The room was quiet, clean, and nicely layed out. I really liked that the black out shades had their own frame so the room was literally blacked out in the morning - perfect for kids who wake up to the sun.
The room was pretty good for the kids. We had 2 queen beds which was plenty of room for everyone. When I checked in, they offered to set up little beds with tents for the boys at no charge. There is a mini fridge that was actually cold - cold enough for my kids' milk to stay cold. The beds were really comfortable, the air conditioning was quiet, I didn't hear any other guests, there was lots of hot water and water pressure in the shower. My only change would be to have a bathtub for the kids but with all the other accomodations, it was easy to look past that.
The staff was very accomodating for the dogs - there was no fee, deposit, damage, or any other charge, for them; they had no issues with the fact that there were two dogs, they had set up dog beds, treats, bowls, and toys in the room before we arrived, and the staff gave them hugs and kisses! Not bad for a couple of dogs who have been in the car all day!
Breakfast was included with our room. It wasn't any run of the mill breakfast - there were eggs, gallo pinto, fresh fruit, cereal, muffins, good coffee, quesadillas.
Check out is at 12pm which is really nice to not be rushed to leave.
The online reservations were easy and it was in a great location close to Walmart, PriceSmart, lots of restaurants nearby, right off Highway 27 (the fast toll road), and easy to get to most parts of the San Jose area.
One other thing to note is that the hotel is across the street from a McDonalds that has a play area - our kids played there for quite a while after a long drive.
Thanks to everyone at the Aloft staff for making our stay very comfortable!

From our room, to the front desk, the bar and our food, we felt attended to by all staff and our needs were sincerely cared about. We enjoyed fresh drinks, fresh food in a tasteful atmosphere. Well Done!

Easy booking, easy check-in, great referrals to drivers and area attractions, the staff is knowledgable and wonderfully bilingual!

Our room was spotless, quiet and fresh smelling.

We returned mid trip to regroup and were met with concern and full assistance. Everyone was friendly. We felt safe. The Internet never failed!

Before booking the room, I made some research about aloft Costa Rica, I thought about it as a "light" version of W Hotels. Actually your slogan suggests something similar: "a vision of W hotels". And Im terribly sorry to say this but this experience has nothing to do with my previous ones with Starwood.
Once my room was booked, I called the property to ask for a room assigned on high floor, as far as possible from the elevator, the person who took the call said that the request was not a problem and he even confirmed. Upon check in no one knew my SPG Number and no one was aware of the request which was supposed to be already confirmed. I was assigned a room on the second floor, out of seven available. When I got to my room there was this huge red piece of dirt on the carpet right next to the bed. Now, I understand that the hotel has an eco-friendly policy and they encourage their guests to decline new sheets and towels on a daily basis, but that shouldn't mean that your bed would stay just the way you left it before service, meaning no one took care of my bed during six nights.
Now, food. That's a topic by itself. I ordered room service, an easy one. Steak with some salad (salad instead of fries) and what was my surprise when I got my dish, it was way overcooked (even when I asked to have it medium-well) and tasteless. In addition they charged an extra salad even when they said they could serve instead of fries, by the way, that salad tasted as a week old bunch of herbs. A service cart is not offered, the dishes are not even covered. You don't get bread, crackers or at least a tortilla together with your food.
Aloft's staff is friendly... Yeah... However they're not exceptional, they are just frontline representatives, not the face and image on Starwood and SPG.

Adamsfco,

First of all thank you very much for taking your time to provide us with such usefull feedback. We are one of Starwoods selected service brands and in San Jose have been adapting into a full service hotel since our opening. As of August 19th we will be opening our Backyard Lounge & Restaurant providng better gastronomic experience to our guests inlcuding delivery service to the rooms. I am sorry about the lack of recognition on check in and this issue has been delt with already with our Front Desk Staff. Starwoods Make a Green Choice Program does not include making of the bed or even cleaning of the guest room, we are sorry if for some reason the information was not clear. We hope that you can give us an opportunity when in San Jose again.

We live in Costa Rica, on the pacific coast, and we like to travel with our dog so were delighted when we found that this hotel accepts pets with NO EXTRA CHARGE!! And we were blown away when we arrived to find dog food bowls in the room, dog treats and a special doggie bed. The staff was so friendly and loving towards our dog... usually he doesn't like to travel but after 3 days I don't think he wanted to leave! On top of the incredible and friendly staff, the rooms are VERY nice, clean and QUIET - surprising since it is so close to a busy road but we did not hear a thing from outside. The lobby bar is also a busy place on weekends with a live DJ - our room was on the 2nd floor just above the bar but we also could not hear a thing from downstairs when we were in the room. The surrounding area is also fantastic with plenty of restaurants, banks, shops and supermarkets all within walking distance or a very short drive. If you are looking for a great, affordable (and pet friendly) hotel to spend a few days in San Jose or just overnight before or after your international flight, you won't find a better place... HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Stayed there for a three day business trip.

The hotel is pretty close to the airport but far away from the city. But - the city itself has not too much to offer, so its ok.

All necessary things like a grocery store, restaurants and some bars are in walking distance.

Check-in is effective. Lizet is a pearl in helping, supporting and making your stay more comfortable.

The breakfast is Aloft-typical taking place in the open lobby area. You prepare your own baguettes and plates and hang out anywhere in the lobby, at the bar, at a desk, close to the pool table or free-to-use computers.
Ah, of course WIFI is for free, all over the hotel.

You even can hire a taxi from and to the airport - charging it to your room.

The only thinkg - you should not be a smoker :-). Its almost impossible.

I definitely will come back. I love this Aloft places - and this one is a very typical representative ot this hip hotel concept.

And again - THANK YOU LIzet for all your support and help during my stay.

Room Tip: I think any room is good.
